THE GREATEST GAME EVER PLAYED
Directed by: Bill Paxton
Written by: Mark Frost
Cast: Shia LaBeouf, Colin Firth, Elias Koteas, Stephen Dillane, Michael Weaver
Studio: Walt Disney
Genre: Drama
Official Site: N/A
Release Date: September 30, 2005 (wide)
This is based on his best-selling book "The Greatest Game Ever Played: Harry Vardon, Francis Ouimet and the Birth of Modern Golf." It tells the true story of the legendary 1913 U.S. Open in which Ouimet, a 20-year-old golf amateur from Massachusetts, shocked the genteel golf world by defeating British champion Vardon, the most famous pro golfer of his time and the inventor of what today is still considered the modern grip and swing. Weaver will play John J. McDermott, the defending champion at the event, who has no intention of letting leading British golfer, Harry Vardon, take the championship.

It's when I heard "From the studio that brought you Miracle" that I decided to skip seeing it.

I finally saw the commerical for this...I'd have to say golf isn't really my thing either-- BUT, it looks to be more of an underdog kind of story-- like Seabiscuit-- which means that it won't necessarily be all golf, all the time. I loved seabiscuit, but I wouldn't say I am any sort of equestrian or anything.

Saw this on Tuesday night. It is overlong and sticks faithfully to every single cliche possible. Doesn't matter that it's a true story. We've seen this movie a hundred times before, and this flick does nothing to distinguish itself. LaBeouf is good, but the movie is painfully mediocre.

Well there is a reason they make movies like this a bunch (even though i can name maybe 5)-- becasue people like them. Underdog stories, especially true ones, are motivating even for those who are not generally the underdog themself. As for LaBeouf, I am interested in seeing him in action-- I bet he is an up and comer...I will be seeing this regardless of your mediocre review.

Well no fucking shit. I could have told you that. But what does that have to do with a movie's quality? Nothing. This is not a good movie. Simple as that.

Relax, bud. We can have different opinions. I was just responding to your statement "We've seen this movie a hundred times before" and explaining that people like films like this which is why we see them over and over.

Just saw the movie. I had a firend with me and when we left the film he described it as well as I think anyone could. It is sweet, innocous and benign in every possible way. In other words its nothing great, its not bad, its just nice.
6/10

That poster too closely resembles Dead Poet's Society for my liking.
Anyway, I love the Pax and thought Frailty was one of the best horror films to come out in many a blue moon, but I really don't give one iota about the film's subject matter. So I'll probably skip it.
Sorry Bill.

I'm sooooo sick of seeing the trailer. I just want Taft to go apeshit on that punkass little caddy.
"How you doin', Mr. President?"
"I want that boy killed. Do as I say!"

I am iffy on this one. I was suprised that Bill Paxton was taking over the directorial reigns, which was a strange decision because he has made one of the most original and deeply disturbing horror films to come out in recent years, Frality. So, I don't really have enormous expectations for this film because it is from the people that gave us Miracle.

You have to be kidding. That kid cracks me up. It's actually the one part that gets me laughing every time. He's pudgey, cute, and outgoing-- honestly, he will be hysterical. Chunky kids are always funny.

You see hysterical, I see precocious/obnoxious Spencer Breslin-lookalike. To each their own.

And you would be right. Hysterical the kid is not. Annoying is more like it. Plus, they overdo it big time. He gets way too much screen time and says the same shit over and over again.

I guess I'm in the minority here. I actually liked this movie a lot. Shia did a good job at acting, and the kid usually pisses me off. I hated Battle of Shaker Heights and detested his roles in I, Robot and Constantine. I actually commend him for this movie.
The story is a basic underdog story, but I think that because it's based on a true story, about an amateur that actually beat the guy who revolutionized golf at a U.S. Open makes the story more appealing to me.
Paxton made the game of golf exciting. Golf doesn't excite me at all. That scene with the round that took place in the rain? Good stuff. And I thought the Eddie Lowery character was a good addition, too. I thought he carried his scenes very well.
The authenticity of the film was great, too. Paxton did a great job capturing the look of the period, and the movie itself looked pretty vintage.
My only qualms: that "love story." They should've just kept it out of the film all together or put it to better use. It didn't really add to anything. The CGI shots seemed unnecessary. As if they were afraid of losing peoples' attention so they added explosive CGI shots. Not needed.
Overall I really enjoyed the film...but then again it really wasn't anything special. It was a solid film, but that's all. Nothing to write home to Mom about. Perhaps if it were a little more personal and focused more on Ouimet's story it would've left a little more impact.

Ahhhh--- thank you. You are not alone. I think it looks good too-- but wait-- you saw it? Sneak preview?? I personally always enjoy underdog stories-- and since it is true, it makes it much less cliche in my mind.
I heard good things about Shia as well-- I think Hollywood may start getting in to him.

I compeltely disagree Ive always liked Shia even in crappy movies but I thought he was really just ok here. Also couldnt agree more about the love story. Easily the most wasted part of the movie.
