I'm sure everyone knows about Family Guy on here, so there is no need for an explanation about it's cancellation. I will bring up one thing about its history though. In the later seasons of Family Guy, before it was cancelled, people noticed that the quality was starting to drop somewhat. It just wasn't as consistently funny as season 1 and 2. It was still very funny of course, but it just wasn't as consistent in laughs according to people. The reason why this happened was because most of the writers from seasons 1 and 2 left the show since it was in limbo. With the departure of most of the old writers, people say that would be the cause of the inconsistency. In the returning season, the same writers from the final seasons came back, and two writers from FG left to work on American Dad(a team who has stayed with the show ever since episode 1). The recent season of Family Guy is very hit and miss, and just decides to bring in memorable side characters like the greased up deaf guy or ollie williams for laughs. The Family Guy movie, like season 4, is also very hit and miss. It's split up into three parts since when Family Guy returns on September 11th for the rest of the season's episodes the movie will be split up into three episodes(but with extra material not on the DVD, so you'll have to watch the show AND buy the movie to get everything). The DVD just has about 10 extra minutes of material that's at the beginning and end of the movie and a few swear words scattered throughout the film. Nothing to go absolutely crazy over, unless you go nuts when you hear Lois or Stewie tell someone to fuck off.
Since the movie is going to be split in 3 parts for TV, the storyline also seems split in 3. Part 1 has Stewie surviving a near death experience. Part 2 has the story actually start, with Stewie going to San Franciso with Brian after seeing a man on the TV from there who looks just like him(assuming it's his father since Peter could never create someone like Stewie). Stewie eventually meets the man but finds out that the man is in fact Stewie from 30 years in the future(people in the future take vacations back in time instead of destinations). Part 3 has Stewie going to the future and finding out what he'll be like. There's a different side story to each part also.
So was the movie funny? Well, like the current season, it's very hit and miss. A lot of the jokes fall flat, but there are a lot of jokes that are great. The jokes that do work are really worth a few chuckles though. I just want to know when the writers thought that fart jokes were in Family Guy a lot? Looking back on the previous seasons pre-cancellation it never really used any fart jokes, but now for some reason the show thinks fart jokes are just an essential part to the show. It never was to my knowledge, and the fart jokes here simply aren't funny.
There is a lot of just plain bad material here. For example, they show 90210 with one of the cast members being a really old woman. Not funny. Or a Las Vegas act called The Jew Man Group. That wasn't funny either. There are some great parts though, like Jesus showing his tricks or Lois' Christmas present(you'll have to see both of them to understand what I mean).
When this movie does come out though, I can see a lot of the same people who made Family Guy become famous(that being college and high school students that go to Hot Topic so they can buy the FG merchandise)loving it to death and quoting it over and over like they did with the previous seasons. I just don't find the movie even holds a candle to some of the other stuff they produced. What I do know is that if I was given the option of watching the movie or watching 3 episodes from the DVD set, I would choose the DVD set without hesitating.
6.5/10
