Whats the best story told by a charecter in a movie? I say Quints Indianapolis story in Jaws. Fred Williamsons Nam story in From Dusk Till Dawn is pretty funny too.

Well, Doc and Adam got the two I thought of first, but now that I think of it, I also love Nice Guy Eddie's story about Elois and her adventures w/ Super Glue in Reservoir Dogs. Keitel's reaction (genuine, robust laughter) is a typically brilliant piece of acting from him.

This is quite different from the first suggestions, but in The Crying Game Forest Whitaker tells a story that I still remember, though it's been ages since I last saw that film.
I'm not sure how right I remember it, but I'm going to try and quote it here.
So, there's a turtle (or a frog, something like that). The turtle is about to cross a river, when a scorpion comes and asks if the turtle will take him over. The turtle says no, because the scorpion would sting him and kill him. The scorpion says "if I killed you, we'd both die in the river".
So the turtle agrees and takes the scorpion in his back and starts to cross the river. About half way through, the scorpion sting the turtle. "Why did you do that, now we're both going to die", the turtle asks. "It's in my nature", the scorpion replies.
I loved that story, how appropriate it was in that situation, and Whitaker told it so great, that I still remember it.
But I also love the one in Reservoir Dogs.

I completely forgot about that, that sure is one great story. And Harvey does a great job there, it looks as that really did happen to him.

Yes! Damnit, I forgot that one. A great story in a great film. Like I've written before, one of Keitel's best performances, and my favorite character of his: Augie!

Fred MacMurray tells the story regarding the plot between him and Barbara Stanwyck in Billy Wilder's Double Indemnity. Which is still one of the all time best films ever made. Perfectly structured thriller told in flashback.
Another that comes to mind would be Bastian from The Neverending Story.

I should've noted this one...The entire film is like a big, warm Christmas story. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif
Another notable: the building contracter's story in CLERKS.

Jean Sheppard, who wrote the original stories that the movie was based on. I have always wondered how much of this stuff was literally true (i.e., did his dad get a lamp shaped like a leg?)

Jason Patrick tells a really foul story in YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS, but the acting was quite good.

That would be the story about the kid Patric and his buddies tormented in high school, right? Solid scene, excellent evil performance from Patric...too bad the movie as a whole was ho-hum.
