Actor: 'Chappelle's Show' is over

NEW YORK (AP) -- Time to face the facts: Dave Chappelle's hit Comedy Central series isn't coming back, says one of its stars.

" 'Chappelle's Show' is over, man. Done," comic Charlie Murphy told TV Guide. "It took me a long time to be able to say those words, but I can say it pretty easy now, because it's the truth."

Chappelle's sudden "spiritual retreat" to South Africa on the eve of his show's third season has left the series in limbo since May. About half of a new season had been filmed before Chappelle left, Murphy said.

"I'm disappointed it ended the way it did, but I'm not angry with anybody," he said. " 'Chappelle's Show' was like the Tupac of TV shows. It came out, it got everybody's attention, it was a bright shining star, but it burned out and for some strange reason, it burned out quick."

Comedy Central has always said the door is open for Chappelle to return, spokeswoman Aileen Budow said Wednesday.

Network chief Doug Herzog met with Chappelle on June 3, but that has been their last communication, she said.

Murphy, the older brother of comic Eddie Murphy, said his two seasons with Chappelle made him a star.

"Now I can go out and do stand-up," he said. "I'm getting movie offers. It's off the hook. Me getting to the next level or whatever's going to happen is going to come from the next things I do, but 'Chappelle's Show' served its purpose and I'll always be grateful."

On again off again. WTF is really going on here?

i love Dave Chappelle... and i did agree with him leaving to get his life in order... but now he is back... and its time to start acting like a fuckin grown up. The show got his ass 50 million fucking dollars. Just fucking do the show... even if the season isnt as good as the first 2 seasons.. whats different in that than every other fucking tv show on tv???

I dont know man... i mean, just do the next 2 seasons of the show and then hang it up.. after honoring your contract that is.

Fuck. Well, like Cronkite calling the war unwinnable, it's over folks.

Just for the record, Chappelle has no money to give back because no one actually gave him $50 mil. He signed a contract that some analyst said was potentially worth $50 mil. It was all based on projected sales of DVD sets for season 3 and season 4 plus the actual work of season 3 and 4 plus a couple of original specials that he would produce. The only thing that happened was what Murphy mentions in the article so he certainly got paid for that and I assume Comedy Central could air that material just without Dave Chappelle doing the intros.

Agree - Get stella off air. That show is so unfunny.

Disagree - Chappelle is not overrated.

Well it was funny AND smart...so of course it was doomed to fail in one way or another.

I loved Michael Ian Black on all that VH1 stuff he did, but yeah, Stella seriously blows. I can't figure out how they expected people to like it.

What ever. He ended his show while he was at the top of his game, good for him. It's not the end of the world or anything, and if his new material does suck as he says it does then I don't want to see it, it'll ruin the first two seasons for me.

I thought that season2 was a big letdown compared to number 1, as it didnt have the great lughs that the first did, but s2 did have alot fo moments but msot of them werent upto the crying laughign that i had from s1....but that couldve been from my over expectations...

Chappelle's show is over? But SNL goes on to it's 95th season?

uggg..

I could see comedy central giving Charlie Murphy his own show though...not saying it's a good idead but I wouldnt be surprised.

While im sad it see that its over, at least it DID die on top and will be rememberd as such rather then wasting away slowly.

Yeah it sucks that mediocre shows continue to carry on year after year and a funny one like this can't even sustain 3 seasons. It seems to me that it's pretty common for talanted comedians to burn out quickly. Almost like they can't ever seem to sustain themselves at this level. Often they either become has-beens or go crazy and flake out eventually.

Actually, Chappelle still wants to work with Charile; by bringing his "True Hollywood Stories" material to the big screen with Charlie starring. And possibly without the Rick James stuff.

As for Charlie saying the show is officially over: I think it's a hoax.

Calm me Brett Ratner, bat-shit crazy or optimistic, but I think it's a hoax setup by Chappelle and a few people in his inner circle (Charlie included) to calm the uncontrollable fans that can't get through one damn episode without saying or thinking about those 4 fucking words (don't you dare ask me what they are, you all know what they are). I think when the questions, controversy, and crazyness calms down a bit, "Chappelle's" will make it's return to CC.

LOVE,
YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBOORHOOD BASTARD.

Depends on who you ask, I suppose. Everything loses its luster at some time. How a show reinvents itself determines its survival.

Hmm. Well, South Park will be around as long as it can and I have to say that Family Guy is original, too.

Stella rules. It sucks that Chapelle is done though. Ah well, life goes on.

Enough with the Stella hate people, you just don't enjoy that kind of humor :(

It's too random and out there for most people, I think it's one of the funniest and original shows out there right now

Anyways, Chappelle had plans to stop the show after season 2 because the expectations would be too high and the quality would suffer(he couldn't stretch the race thing anymore). They offered 50 million dollars, he says okay. He probably realised that he was right and decided to end it.

He hasn't gotten any money from the contract yet, no need to complain about him cheating out anyone.

All good things must come to an end. And Chappelle's Show was definitely a good thing. On the brightside, all the fans have two awesome seasons on DVD to cherish forever.
