Of all the topics raised in this forum I don't think anyone has raised a musicals topic. I guess that is because not many of you are into this genre. Anyway, for those of you who are: I want your top ten favorite musical films and the what, in your opinion, is the musical highlight of that film. Here's my list:

1. Gigi- (highlight: Leslie Caron singing Gigi. Costumes and direction are the best of any musical I think)

2. Singin In the Rain- (highlight: cross between "make em laugh" and Gene Kelly singing the title song. Also, Cyd Charisse's formidable presence is overwhelming.)

3. Hello Dolly-( higlight: Barbra and Louis Armstrong singing together during "hello Dolly")

4. The West Side Story-(highlight: The Dance at the gym of course. Yowza! http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif )

5. Anchors Aweigh-(highlight: Gene Kelly and Jerry the Mouse. Way ahead of its time!)

6. Funny Girl- (higlight: Barbra Strisand singing "You Are So Beautiful" w/ a pillow in her dress. It's hilarious.)

7. High Society-(highlight: Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra's classic duet "Well, Did You Ever?")

8. An American In Paris-(highlight: the deleriously beautiful dance sequence at the end that won the film its Oscar)

9. Oliver!-(highlight: Ron Moody's wonderful presence and the musical number "Consider Yourself".)

10. Seven Brides For Seven Brothers-(highlight: The Barn Raising Dance. Russ Tamblin was an athletic wizard!)

1. Meet Me in St. Louis: One of the few musicals that seemlessly integrate story and song.

2. Easter Parade: Judy Garland, Fred Astaire terrific singing and dancing. Both star look like they are having a blast.

3. The Wizard of Oz: A beautiful, imaginative film.

4. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers: A fun vigorious film.

5. White Christmas: Rosemary Clooney and Bing Crosby singing together is worth it alone but add in the charming Sisters duet and it's a classic.

6. Moulin Rogue: Inventive, like seeing the awakening of a new and imaginative style of filmmaking.

7.The Sound of Music: I remember having to sit through this in high school and hating it. But the songs are just terrific.

8. Everybody Says I Love You: All my friends totally hated this film but I found it wonderful in a charming way. I liked the fact some of the stars were sort of off key and off step in the numbers. It brought a nice twist.

9. Singing in the Rain: I am not a huge fan of this film. I think Debbie Reynolds is flat out awful here. But the Good Morning song is cheerful and the title dance is tremendous.

10. Night and Day: Okay this is my guilty pleasure pick. I saw this musical on TCM one morning and even though it's kinda cheesy I adore it. Cary Grant stinks in the title role. But good grief the Cole Porter songs are so wonderful

I love movie musicals. Here are some of my favorites:

1. The Producers
2. Singin in the Rain
3. The Wizard of Oz
4. West Side Story
5. South Park: Bigger Longer and Uncut
6. Sound of Music
7. My Fair Lady
8. Moulin Rouge
9. Guys and Dolls
10. Tommy

Sadly, the movie-musical genre has gone down the drain in the past few decades. And actually most musicals I like work much better as Broadway plays than movies (a la The Music Man, The King and I, Oliver, Oklahoma, Annie, even Hello Dolly). Let's hope Moulin Rouge brings back more musicals to the silver screen!
