I was talking with my friend yesterday about how it seems like, often, bands do their best work when they're on the verge of breaking up. This led me to think about some bands where the final albums were great. What does everyone think are the best last albums (the last albums with a band's specific line-up also count for this)?

Some of the ones I came up with:
The Beatles- Abbey Road (I know Let It Be came out after it, but as I understand it, Abbey Road was recorded last)
Husker Du- Warehouse: Songs and Stories
Dead Kennedys- Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death
Joy Division- Closer
Nirvana- Unplugged in New York
The Smiths- Strangeways, Here We Come
REM- New Adventures in Hi-Fi (I know they're still around, and their live shows still kick ass, but I like to pretend their recording career ended after this album, since it was the last one with BIll Berry, as well as their last album that was better than just "ok")
Pink Floyd- The Wall (I know they did two more albums after this, but this was the last one with their best line-up)

Hmmm how about Combat Rock, that was the last album that The Clash made with the original line-up.

I second Abbey Road with a vengeance...

Also, From a Basement on a Hill by Elliott Smith, his best album period.

I thought this thread was BEST LAST ALBUMS, not THE ALBUM WE WISH WOULD HAVE BEEN A BAND'S LAST. Seriously. That's like saying I'd like to pretend Iron Maiden never did anything past KILLERS.

Best Last Studio Albums (no remixes or best of’s) with original members or before they died.

Electric Ladyland – The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Street Survivors - Lynyrd Skynyrd

In Step - Stevie Ray Vaughan

Master Of Puppets - Metallica

1984 – Van Halen

Astro Creep: 2000 -- Songs of Love, Destruction, and Other Synthetic Delusions of the Electric Head – White Zombie

In Through The Out Door - Led Zeppelin
( I know this is not one of Zeppelin’s better albums, but considering the state of the band at the time. I think it’s pretty good, and Fool In The Rain has always been one of my favorite Zep tunes.)

Faith No More-Album of the Year
Soundgarden-Down on the Upside
Alice in Chains-Alice in Chains
Mr. Bungle-California
Nothingface-Skeletons
White Zombie-Astrocreep 2000

Most of my favorite bands are no longer with us.

The Doors - LA Woman

That's the only one I could think of off the top of my head that hasn't been mentioned yet. By the way, The Final Cut was actually the last Pink Floyd album with the Waters line up, some people consider it basically a Roger Waters solo album because he everything on it, but Pink Floyd plays it and it's released under their name, so that's that.

I disagree that Warehouse was Husker Du's best work, as is obvious by my avatar. However it's definitely a lot better than it gets credit for.
