From ESPN.com

The NCAA banned the use of American Indian mascots by sports teams during its postseason tournaments, but will not prohibit them otherwise.

The NCAA's executive committee decided this week the organization did not have the authority to bar Indian mascots by individual schools, committee chairman Walter Harrison said Friday.

Nicknames or mascots deemed "hostile or abusive" would not be allowed on team uniforms or other clothing beginning with any NCAA tournament after Feb. 1, said Harrison, the University of Hartford's president.

Now FSU (that's right, the Seminoles), with the backing of Florida's governor Jeb Bush, has threatened legal action against the NCAA after this decision.

What do you people think? I'm wondering why the NCAA chose to do this now. The Fighting Illini, the Seminoles, etc. have had these nicknames for a while. Why choose to piss 'em off now?

I think its rediculous. Who cares what their team names and mascots are. Its only a game. If there were a team called the Madison Whites with a white guy as their mascot i really would not care or get offended. Some people just need to relax and realize that it is a just a game.

Fuck, man. I'm part Irish. Do you see me protesting outside Notre Dame?

Fuck no! You can call your team the fighting whities for all I care. It's just a name. You can twist it so many ways to make it offensive.

The Miami Hurricanes?? MY FATHER DIED IN A HURRICANE OMG CHANGE IT B4 I SUE U!!111oneone!!1

I can understand how it might be offensive, but honestly.

PS. Go Whities!

I'm currently waiting to see if I get published in the Dallas Morning News in reply to Kevin Blackistone's article on 'Despicable Mascots'. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/columnists/kblackistone/stories/080605dnspoblackistone.2267dcdf.html

In the letter I wrote how you can look at any team's mascots and find discrepancies. The 49ers being one of the worst ones. An old, scraggly filthy white man with a long beard and worn down hat. Is that the positive image we should have for the brave souls who ventured into the California sun? Should we also have the New England Patriots? After all of the people who died in the revolutionary war we mock them with a cyber design on helmets? I even did the same about his beloved Cowboys.

I also wrote asking if he had problems with different ethincities and cultures being mascots. Should we just keep the caucasian mascots? Are those the only ones allowed?

His main gripe was that the dictionary says Redskin is an offensive slang term towards Native Americans. If he hadn't looked it up in the dictionary, would he have thought it was REALLY an offensive term? I wouldn't have. Our society has modernized it. There is no racist ventured nor gained. The only problem is the minorities squawking over this because they either have no real issues to overcome from being a minority, or they are looking over the ones that stare them in the face everyday. I think it's the latter.

It's going to really get so bad that we're just going to have to tell teams to pick a color. Thank God we've got Cleveland already done.

The way the term nigger is being modernized today, after my children are old and maybe after they are dead I can seriously see (this is 80-100 years from now) a basketball team called the Detroit Niggas or something to that extent in the far future. The MTV modernizing is taking its power away and give it another century from now and it will be a whole new term. Only the dictionary will have to remain so maybe Kevin Blackistone's great grandchildren will be able to see that Nigga is from the term Nigger and was an offensive slang term towards Blacks.

Good. How would black people feel if a college went by "the Amistads."

With or without permission from the tribes, they are still pissing enough people off if it warrented this type of action.

Is Chiefs (as in Kansas City) offensive? That Dallas News guy mentioned it in his article. I don't see how that could bum people out. That's not deragatory or anything. It's a title - not just for the heads of tribes - but also Fire Chief, Police Chief, etc.

But, they might have to change the arrowhead to a fire hydrant or a set of handcuffs.

I'm an FSU fan. So, I don't care for this.
Why don't they do something more constructive and worry about offending large reptiles. Then they can change the Florida Gators to the Florida Weasles.
Man, it just ain't the same bad mouthing the Gators with Spurrier being gone.
I guess I could goof on South Carolina. But, I just can't think anything humorous to say about a team called the Buzzcocks.

THe whole thing is ridiculous.

I am an Illini fan and am from Illinois. I can tell you that the University nonors the Illini tribe to the fullest. They go out of their way to put together a very realistic Chief Illiniwick warbrobe. The dance that Chief Illniwick does is chroagraphed (cant spell) by an actual Illini tribe dance. Its not just some frat boy mocking them.

As for the Florida St Seminoles. That is also bullshit. The Floridia Seminoles tribe is honored to have their tribe name be represented rather than forgotten. There was some talk that the Oklahoma seminoles tribe didnt like it but that was untrue as their spokesperson said they have absolutely no problem with it considering Florida St is honoring them and not mocking them.
