Fifth 007's services no longer required, he's told

NEW YORK (AP) -- A single, surprising phone call and it was over. That's how Pierce Brosnan says he learned that his services as James Bond would no longer be required.

"One phone call, that's all it took!" the 52-year-old actor tells Entertainment Weekly magazine in its August 19 issue.

Brosnan starred in four Bond films. He says that before they stopped negotiations, the producers had invited him back for a fifth time.

"You know, the movie career for me really started with Bond," says Brosnan, acknowledging that by the time "GoldenEye" premiered in 1995, he was already 42.

He then starred as 007 in "Tomorrow Never Dies" (1997), "The World Is Not Enough" (1999) and "Die Another Day" (2002).

His departure from the role was a "titanic jolt to the system," says Brosnan, followed by "a great sense of calm."

"I thought. ... I can do anything I want to do now. I'm not beholden to them or anyone. I'm not shackled by some contracted image. So there was a sense of liberation."

Brosnan says he's grateful to have had the role, but adds: "It never felt real to me. I never felt I had complete ownership over Bond. Because you'd have these stupid one-liners -- which I loathed -- and I always felt phony doing them."

He plays a foulmouthed, skirt-chasing hit man in the upcoming film "The Matador."

"(For this) to come on the heels of my departure from the world of Bond is sweet grace, to play this one as a farewell to that chapter in time -- it certainly wasn't planned."

--------------------------------------

Sounds like they uncerimoniously dumped his ass. Now the question is who they'll be replacing him with. This franchise needs to be retired either way as it is no longer even culturally relevant. That is unless they get Bond to start taking out Jihadi terrorists which is never gonna happen in today's PC film industry.

What about the whole "Casino Royale" thing?
More than one Bond and the Bond that makes it through to the end of the film is the new Bond?

Hugh Jackman-Bond?
Orlando Bloom-Bond?
Colin Ferrell-Bond?

It boggles the mind.

Surely he's forgetting his role in the cinema milestone Mrs. Doubtfire.

Christian Bale anyone?! I really don't know for myself, or really care... I'm not a big fan of the James Bond of late.

What he surely meant was that the Bond films made him a big star.

My two cents here: the guy's done four 007 flicks. Let him call it a day and move on. Whether or not the franchise should continue at all is another question, but if they're gonna be as stale and uninspired as Die Another Day, I don't think so. Unless they go with Sean Connery's suggestion to give Tarantino a shot at the series.

..why WOULDNT u?

Tarantino had an exellent point about how the series is bullet proof anyway. Even if the next 6 Bond films suck in a row, people will line up to see the next one.

I think Clive Owen would be awesome, too bad.

He's too boyishly cute to be Bond IMHO, and never liked him in the part. ("oh look at me, I'm so cute") is how he came across to me.
Two men I wouldn't mind seeing get the part are Clive Owen or Gerard Butler.those two comes to mind quickly, but there are others.
Collin Farrel seems too young looking to have the finesse from experience "Bond" would have had to play the part of Bond. George Clooney has had such light weight parts, I don't know if he can pull it off as believable at this point. Hmmm, Craig Bierko, I 's like that.
Or, -forgot his name-the actor from "American Beauty" "Usual Suspects"tho, don't know about him as action personality.Enough. Just no more P Brosnan!

I can' think of a better choice for a new Bond than Clive Owen...

...fuck... oh well... I guess we can't physically force him to play Bond...

... or can we?
