I know that alot of people are going to go for the newer movies like Usual Suspects and Sixth Sense. But I would have to go for the most heartbreaking ending ever.

Drum roll please!

DUm Dum Dum dum da!

City Lights! Charlie Chaplin's comedy classic, you would have to be not from this world to not cry for this ending. Anyone who has seen it will know what I am talking about.

Very wild, mind-blowing, and weird.

I lean towards the Shawshank Redemption.
When Red sees Andy on the beachcoupled
with Morgan Freeman's voice over. It
rarely gets better.

- Shawshank Redemption
- Se7en
- Sixth Sense
but I like The Others even more
- American Beauty <--- absolutely incredible ending
- Memento <--- especially the narrative

Probably Se7en...nobody in the cinema saw that coming.

Guessed Sixth Sense before I went to the cinema so I was a little disappointed.

What about Reservoir Dogs? Thought that had a really well shot ending.

Oh yeah almost forgot Scarface has a good ending.

Oh, yeah and the Dr. Strangelove-like ending of the anime Metropolis, set to the tune of Ray Charles' "I Can't Stop Loving You", bizarre but hilarious and awesome!

Best ending with a twist is easily Angel Heart. But ending without it easily Requiem for a Dream.

At the very end of Fight Club right before the credits roll, a (screwed up looking) human dick is visible for about a second. It's an in-joke because Brad Pitt said that when he worked as a projectionist he would splice in a picture of pornography for just a second between reel changes.

I rarely actually see the end shot of Shawshank because Morgan's brilliant narration has already reduced me to tears.

Other great ones:

The last shot of Michael Corleone, sitting all by himself, knowing deep down that he's crossed a line his Father never would have, at the end of The Godfather, Part II.

The last shot of The Hill, when Davis and the other guy just can't stop themselves, with Connery trying desperately to keep them from doing it: "No! Don't you see, we've won! We've won! You'll muck it all up!" The emotion in his voice...

"Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

"Forget about it, Jake. It's Chinatown."

I'm very surprised that no-one has yet mentioned One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest.

It's just classic, the shot of Chief running across the field...brilliant.

I meant to mention that one. That's another one that will usually have me tearing up. I think I've mentioned this before, but the German girl is played by Susanne Christian, who was Kubrick's wife.
