Free Bonuses with DVD releases

Hey fellow schmoes,

I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread that would inform everyone of all of the bonus giveaways (i.e. bonus discs) that retailers sometime include with DVD releases. I'm sure some of you are like me . . . all about the free stuff! There have been times where I was undecided as to whether or not I was going to buy a DVD, and then found out it had a bonus disc or something included, and that more often than not, it was the deciding factor. But it can be tough to keep track of which retailer is including what bonuses, if any, for all new releases. And most often the free stuff is limited so once its gone, its gone. So I thought everyone could post what they find out each week so we'll all know what's out there and not miss anything. Let me know what you guys think.

There were only 9 bonus DVD per store for "Sahara" at Best Buy.

Next week there will be a bonus disc on limited copies of season one box set of "Lost" at Best Buy. I'm going to be there when the store opens.

It used to be that Best Buy had anywhere from 75-100 bonus discs per store. Not anymore.

The August 28th copy of "TV Guide" has a bonus mini disc for the upcoming season of "Lost". Which pisses me off. I've been a subscriber for nearly twenty years. No disc for me. It's only available on retail copies. BASTARDS!

The ad said a minimum of 9 per store. My Best Buy had at least 25 on the front display alone when I was there yesterday. It could be that your store actually only did get 9 with the bonus, but hopefully that's not the case.

I got the Tommy Boy special edition with the Bobble-head on tuesday.

Circuit City has is for the same price but with a free t-shirt. I decided I wanted a bobble-head more than a t-shirt.

I got my copy of Tommy Boy at Circuit City for several reasons.
1 - It's closer to my house
2 - It was $2 cheaper than other places
3 - Curb Your Enthusiasm season 4 was there for cheaper than other places.
Anyway, the t-shirt is pretty bad.It's a Fruit of the Loom extra large white t-shirt. It's plain white with red letters and says:

Retail giant Wal-Mart has snagged an exclusive bonus DVD from Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox that will come bundled with the November 1st release of Star Wars - Episode II: Revenge of the Sith. The disc, titled The Story of Star Wars, features the newly-created hour-long program chronicling father and son Anakin & Luke Skywalker, as told by R2-D2 & C-3PO. No word on how limited the disc will be, but you can bet I'll be there to pick up a copy on day one.

On the other hand, Wherehouse has a bonus disc for Tripping The Rift (first season). What is it? Your guess is as good as mine. What bothers me is that all the sale DVDs have a lower price because of a mail-in rebate. I hate those. I'm still waiting on a rebate for the printer I bought three years ago. I don't play that game anymore. I'll probably buy that bonus DVD on Ebay or such.

Picked up the collector's tin for King Kong, they only had three copies. Either short packed or sold quickly. I thought it was a bit pricey. I know it's near forty bucks, they were selling it for 33.99, odd. I was expecting twenty-eight or twenty-nine.

Even though it has a nearly incomprehensible story and the acting is cookie cutter, All Souls Day is still a somewhat enjoyable B-grade zombie romp; as long as you're a fan of the genre. The story revolves around a teen couple (Marisa Ramirez and Eurotrip's Travis Wester) whose trip south of the border during the Day of the Dead takes a bloody turn when the flesh eating undead rise. There's much more to the story than that, but you'll be hard pressed to make sense of it all, so you may as well enjoy the campiness of All Souls Day as long as you don't expect much from it. The gore effects are about what you would expect from a low budget zombie romp, but they're not all bad, and there's some familiar faces abound as well in the cast, which also features Mulholland Drive's Laura Harring, David Keith, and genre stalwart Danny Trejo. All in all, All Souls Day is worth a look for zombie fans, and it's much, much better than the recently released Day of the Dead 2: Contagium (which by all means, should be avoided by everyone).

i wondered the same thing. i saw the offer on their website, but i also did not see it say web offer only, which they have done, so i'd try to get it in stores. i'm definitely going to try to. the list of tv series in this offer are on the website in 'this weeks offers'. hope this helps.

Personally, I have enough trouble finding room to store all my DVD's let alone the promotional junk that they have been giving away with most movies. For example, do they really expect me to where a friday night lights hat around? The one promotional thing I haven;t minded though, I will admit, are the free t-shirts. Wal-Mart's bonus disc for Desperate Housewives, season 3 - menu screen.

Important bit of info for those who want the extra DVD.

Please check the boxes (the disc is packed on the rear), see if the disc has fallen out of the cardboard sleeve. The factory or whatever didn't seal the sleeve, it's open and the DVD can slip out.

My store had nineteen copies. Of those only TWO had the disc still inside. The rest were halfway out. One was completely out. I can only guess that those DVDs are scuffed as hell and or scratched up. My copy has a couple of mirco scratches. I'm glad I examined.

You may notice that screen snap is kinda blury; it appears they didn't do that good of a job as they did on the last bonus disc.

As with last week's Desperate Housewives season two, the bonus disc is not sealed in the cardboard sleeve. But unlike DH s2, I saw none of the extra DVDs half way out or completely out of their sleeves.

A notice. I found disc six scratched up. I made an exchange, I'm lucky I know someone there who actually lets me exchange just the damaged disc. I hate it when I they just give me a new box. Anyhow, the other six is also scratched, but to a FAR lesser extent. Could be a factory thing. On the bright side, they were so busy there they didn't notice that they put the bonus disc from exchange into my bag. Sweet. I now have two of them. Ebay later tonight for you.

i usually don't join forums bc too lazy to sign up, etc., but while searching for lists of exclusive bonus discs, i found this awesome thread and had to contribute... u guys have great, extensive lists.... i usually don't collect the exclusives beyond extra discs (the way Johnlan does) but sometimes ill go for them... u guys have a lot of discs i dint even know about!

i have some questions tho:

the matrix reloaded extra disc: i noticed that the "what is bullet time?" feature is also included in the ultmate matrix dvd collection, but what about the "inside the animatrix" feature? is that anything unique or cool?

there are some discs u guys dont have that i can think of (maybe u are already aware of them and dont want them):

and do u ever go for the free sneak preview discs from circuity city that u can get with purchase of any dvd? (example: there was a recent snakes on a plane one...)

on second thought, the animatrix patch MIGHT have been best buy, but for sure it's not circuit city or elsewhere;

yeah, i have issues with circuit city too; i bought Signs there (completely new, sealed, and wrapped)... and when i opened the dvd months later (and receipt long gone), it was empty. bullshit huh? so now, i try to give dvd cases a light shake if i remember to.

also, are u aware that occasionally fye will also give out bonus discs? the workers are a little uninformed there too... i tried getting the hustle and flow bonus disc in january, but apparently they didn't get them and had no idea about it (even tho it was clearly advertised on their huge glass entrance wall)... probably bc no one who tries to save money buys dvds there, so i was probably the first person to ask for it... i dint end up buying hustle and flow there, but they did let me have a fox promotional dvd (24, prison break, bones)... oh, they're also cool about giving away posters on a first come, first served basis... (at least in irvine they were)

"Demand Grows For Retail Exclusives: Studios Offer Incentives In Exchange For Higher Title Orders"

The studio practice of furnishing key retailers with exclusive title premiums is growing, as Circuit City joins the ranks of merchants who demand—and get—such extras.

For some years, Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Target have each demanded a unique premium tied to high-profile DVDs, be it a bonus disc or licensed merchandise that they use as a lure to bring customers in stores.

At the same time that retail competition for exclusive premiums is expanding, studios are starting to offer premiums not just for theatrical blockbusters, but also for middle-tier theatrical titles, TV sets and some indie films as a way to increase their inventory on shelves at key accounts.

Recently, Paramount Home Entertainment’s second season of Laguna Beach, out Aug. 8, came with beauty products at Circuit City and exclusive, unique bonus discs at Target, Trans World and Best Buy.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment assembled three unique bonus discs for Target, Best Buy and Trans World for Prison Break: Season One, which also went on sale Aug. 8.

On the indie front, Magnolia Home Entertainment’s $2.5 million-grossing The Lost City, out the same day, was bundled with an exclusive bonus disc at Target. Lionsgate had exclusive bonus discs to accompany $19 million-grossing Akeelah and the Bee, out Aug. 29, at Wal-Mart and Target.

Warner Home Video is prepping three unique premiums for horror DVD premiere The Rest Stop, streeting Oct. 17.

Most studios declined comment on exclusive SKUs, not wanting to risk upsetting individual retail accounts.

“It’s being done on too many titles, including ones that make under $30 million at the box office,” said a senior studio executive. “There are now four key retailers you have to provide unique value added items—Target, Wal-Mart, Circuit City and Best Buy—and it’s a challenge having to come up with ideas and concepts they’ll adopt. You don’t want one to look over their shoulder and ask, ‘Look, what that guy got!’”

The executive is concerned that retail’s race for exclusives will eventually turn off consumers to DVDs if shoppers feel pressured to buy multiple versions of the same DVD in order to score all the extra value.

Studios are unlikely to stop, however, as they can expect a retailer to take in 5% to 10% more copies of an exclusive version of a title than a straight, vanilla one.

Costs for a bonus disc, which can be 50¢ per unit, are taken out of retailers’ market development funds. Studios grant retailers these funds based on the percentage of copies they agree to take in on a DVD.

“Are you just helping retailers trade share back and forth?” asked one studio source. “It’s a judgment call. You are trying to add some value for consumers, and it’s being funded from dollars retailers are earning anyway.”

Retailers are likely to keep it up as well, hoping to beat rivals in winning DVD sales.
“There are more retailers who are working to get exclusives,” Best Buy spokesman Brian Lucas said. “It’s going to continue to be a competitive landscape. So definitely we’ll be working to bring exciting things for our customers.”

I made an exchange and didn't find another patch in that. I'm glad I pawed the patch before going back inside. There you go.

well, it works... i find myself scrambling for bonus discs every week now... and NOT looking fwd to the week when 4 different stores have 4 different bonus discs... i can live without most of the dumb free giveaways like beanies, alarm clocks, candy, lithographs if they look stupid, that 24 s4 carabiner/clock (man, that was shitty), and discs that are simply preview or trailer ones...

but if it's a lenticular cover (like that batman begins one is pretty sweet) or actual dvd.... i must have it...!

also, i remember Stealth coming with a bonus disc from best buy AND a bonus disc from circuit city (with a discovery channel documentary)... but since the movie was a POS, most ppl won't care... i saw it drunk so i liked it haha

Season 2 is a lot better! Way more indepth, explains a lot more. Just picked up my copy of S2! Includes the Target bonus disc with Q&A with the cast and director and additional deleted scenes not on the other discs!

It was on the outside with a sticky thing on it but peeled away very nicely not leaving any marks! The only one that I have ever had problems with was the Desperate Houswives S1, that one would not come off for anything and when it finally did it tore the box art! Argghhh!

Returned from Best Buy. Picked up season 2.5 of Battlestar Galactica with the bonus disc. I was going to pick up Roar: The Complete Series at Wal-Mart, but I decided to to venture into the TV section. I did a double take. Tried to open the box without ripping the wrapping, just a nudge. Indeed, there it is. I found a copy of Roar (just one) with the Galactica bonus disc sticker on it, appears to have been mistakenly inserted. Bought it too, now I have two copies. Off to Ebay for you.

Bought two copies, Wal-Mart and Circuit City, the extra going on Ebay tonight.

The Wal-Mart bonus DVD appears decent enough. The Circuit City hardcover book looks nice, slick graphics and images, a solid bonus.

The Best Buy bonus book is NOT an exclusive, it's a freebie. The book itself can be bought at any book store. The CD from Target is a what my not-friend calls a "fake exclusive". It's just a mix CD with songs sung by their original artist. NOT a soundtrack. I'm not sure what to make of it. Seems pretty poor of an effort. The Target DVD comes in a fold-out foil slip cover. It appears to be nicer than the actual CD.

Oh. Circuit City screwed up. The price with the hardcover book is twenty bucks. It rang for $14.99. Sway! I also picked up the unrated edition of Feast (blind purchase - please don't suck).

I picked up the Wal-Mart exclusive set. Hmmm. It's ok I guess. I was expecting more. The Circuit City bonus book for Over The Hedge was pure fluff, but was nicely done. This feels like those Scholastic books I used to buy when I was in grade school. It could've been a lot better.

You might want this as a completeist, but for everone else. I'd skip it. Save the extra scratch. I'm not saying I regret paying for it, but I feel it could have been grander. The free 3-D glasses mentioned need to be assembled. Not ready to use.
