this was a headline on Drudge- there is no supporting article yet but I'll check back:
"Eyewitness: Sec of State Condi Rice laughs it up at 'Spamalot' while Gulf Coast lays in tatters. Theater goers on New York' City's Great White Way were shocked to see the President's former National Security Advisor at the Monty Python farce last night -- as the rest of the cabinet responds to Hurricane Katrina... "
Come on!!!! Is Condi supposed to go into mourning about what happened with the hurricane. My family ate pizza and watched a movie last night- the shame of it all!!!!!! The government is taking care of the crisis and it is unfair to pick on her. Why don't these critics say the performance should be cancelled altogether???
Another thing is all the criticism that bush takes for going on vacation-meanwhile the entire congress has also been on vacation this month.I guess, Bush alone should stay in DC and hold down the fort.
One more thing- Rush Limbaugh was saying how there have been articles saying that the poor have been hardest hit by this hurricane- he said that looking at all the people it is hard to distinguish who is suffering more since they are all in dire straits. It is just more political manuveering.

Hmmm.....

Well, you and your family aren't exactly the National Security Advisor and getting paid big bucks to do things like prevent looting, and mass chaos - the sorts of things going on in N.O.
Another thing is all the criticism that bush takes for going on vacation-meanwhile the entire congress has also been on vacation this month.I guess, Bush alone should stay in DC and hold down the fort.
Well, I think after Bush showed up so quickly at the fallen Twin Towers to announce his war on Terror, everyone's expectations probably got higer than they should have been.
Maybe Bush forgot he owned a lumber company again, and doesn't see a need to speak of a push to help rebuild homes.
One more thing- Rush Limbaugh was saying how there have been articles saying that the poor have been hardest hit by this hurricane- he said that looking at all the people it is hard to distinguish who is suffering more since they are all in dire straits. It is just more political manuveering.
Poor people generally aren't going to have Allstate out the next week cutting them checks to rebuild. A majority of the deaths, from my undertstanding were homeless, or people without transportation. Rich people generally dont' go without cars or homes.
I've never looked at those facts as political manuveering -- however, Rush's reasons for questioning this seems a little odd -- considering what he does for a living and all. Yeah, it is political manuveering, what Rush is doing.

I'm sure Condi is doing her job and during the hours outside work she is certainly entitiled to go to a show.
I agree that rich people had no trouble getting out- all the celebs certainly found their way out of there. But though poor people have been hit hard, maybe some people in th e middle class have been hit hard too. Maybe the poor person didn't have that much to lose but maybe the middle class person lost all their possessions and their homes and maybe a check from ALLstate just doen'st make up for the pain they are going though. It is just wrong to try to play this disaster as being harder for one group than the other. Everyone is suffering. Except the rich maybe.but they tend to be the minority.

Lynn - You're a nurse. It's getting near the end of your shift. Suddently thousands of people are rushed to the hospital because of a disaster.
Are you telling me you would go home, just because your shift is over, or would you stay and help, because it is the decent thing to do?
I don't deny the middle class has it hard, nor that the rich have it hard - everyone has it hard. However, you are implying that because they have more possessions, they have more to be upset over.
I'm saying that because they have more possessions, they have more possessions, and more liklihood of replacing those things.
I don't care if some homeless man has a piece of a corn dog stick that is his prized possession and he lost it -- he lost everything, and it's not being replaced. Why should he be less upset than someone who's diamond ring was their prized possession? That seems kind of materialistic and near-sighted.

I dont' agree with your analogy. Condi is not the nurse she is the CFO of the hospital. she calls in and finds out if all the nurses and doctors are in place and if there is anything she can do. They say no casue what the heck can a CFO do in a medical disaster.
The thing is that this is all very mean political target practice. Why pick on Condi? What was everyone else doing that night? Did TEd Kennedy stay home near the phone in case a vote was needed? There are people in place when these things happen and I'm sure Condi is not on eof them.she is the Secretary of STate who goes and talks to the leaders of other nations. She is not head of the REd Cross, you know?
I'm not saying the poordon't have it hard. I just don't think they have it harder. Its like the Maslov's hierachy of needs. Most of these people (with the exception of the low lifes who are raping and shooting) are all at the most basic level of survival right now and becasue of this are equally hard hit.
But after the disaster it will be the middle class who takes the deepest hit cause it is much easier to rent another apartment than to try to collect insurance enough to replace a house and contents when the land is not included and the land these people do own is under water. And I have heard that having a claim with an insurance company for a relatively minor issue can make you uninsurable.

Not in a time of national catastrophe.

So who is to be held to this standard? Should all of the governors, senators and representatives be home during this time? And what if we find out they are watching a comedy on their home tv? Should they be held to the same standard as someone who goes out for their comedy?

The interesting thing, is in most arguements like this -- You'd have expected someone to at least dredge up some things that Condi HAS done - call some foriegn friends, ask for aid.
Instead we are presented with the "She had a right...." arguement.

If president Bush was discovered masturbating into a pork sandwich while watching footage of New Orleans --- The same arguement Lynn is using for Condi could be applied in that situation.
And I imagine it would be.

This is not related to her job so think it is just more evidence of Bush bashing through his surrogates.
Bubba, if Condi asked for foreign aid, we would truly be humiliated by the heaps of criticism that would be coming from every country int he world. It's kind of like Trump asking for help- we are a rich country and we give aid to others and we can well afford our own relief.
