Lee slams plague of sequels

Spike Lee has taken a swipe at Hollywood and its obsession with sequels and remakes, while promoting his new movie at the Venice film festival.
"I'm not naming any individual films but it's the worst it's ever been," the American director told reporters. "It's full of sequels and remakes of TV shows. "There's no originality and that has not always been the case. I am a hopeful person, so I am hopeful things will change," he added.
Lee's comments come as Hollywood suffers its worst slump in ticket sales since 1997. The summer has been notable for a spate of sequels and remakes such as Batman Begins, Herbie: Fully Loaded, The Dukes of Hazzard and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Meanwhile, the Venice festival marched on with Saturday's screening of Casanova, another version of the adventures of the legendary Italian seducer. Played by A Knight's Tale's Heath Ledger, Casanova this time meets his match in the shape of Sienna Miller.
A second Heath Ledger is also in competition in the sinking city: Brokeback Mountain, by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon director Ang Lee. The movie tells the love story between two cowboys in 1970s Wyoming.
Finally, Icelandic singer Björk launched the film she made with her partner, director Matthew Barney, about two human beings who turn into whales. Drawing Restraint 9 was shot on a Japanese whaling ship, with the Björk and Barney dressed up in animal costumes. They take part in a tea ceremony before blowing through blowhole-like cavities on the back of their necks and cutting each other's thighs and feet with knives.

Why was this part kept until the end of the article? I think it should've been first. I think it's one of the funniest things I've ever read. I actually, kinda, want to see this movie now. Just for the sheer entertainment of it.
And Spike Lee has a point.

Spike seems to be jumping on the obvious here.
I'm hoping he's going to put out some films to prove what he's saying is true. I've heard about a new project he has going with Denzel Washington and it sounds pretty good.
Bjork? I think she's attractive, but if you've ever seen her collective of videos (I know she doesn't direct them, but she would object if she didn't like what she saw), you'd know this woman needs some serious help.
There's abstract art, there's expressionism...
And then there's what she does.

It's not Bjork's fault, it's the directors she chooses, damn you Spike Jonze, and you too Chris Cunningham, did I really need to see robots humping each other?

That was pretty special.
Bjork is a an absolute genius musician but mentally, she's off the fucking chart!
I cannot WAIT to see this, and after a quick IMDB search of Matthew Barney I'm now desperately seeking his 98 flick "March of the Anal Sadistic Warrior".
Oh, and Spike Lee talks sense too.

One of the few times that I've actually completely agreed with Spike Lee. Although he is coming off a bit as a master of the obvious.

You know the more I peruse the aisles of my local bookstore and see how many flicks there are that I had NO idea were books first, the more I realize Hollywood was never all that original in the first place.

As soon as I read the thread was about something that Spike said, I knew he would he get slammed by everybody here. I knew it, and I know that sometimes he is a great target, but he's right on this one...

I wouldn't cross a closet to see or hear Bjork.
Spike Lee has climbed on to the "state the obvious" bandwagon.
