Yup, it might come as a shock to you, but the fat guy in the movies is usually portrayed in a down light. What I'd like to know is what are your favorite fat guy roles, whether they be the heroes or the stereotypical "Hey, can I have another donut?" types? http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif

John Candy as "Ox" in Stripes
John Belushi as "Bluto" in Animal House

I've heard of a movie called Heavy, which has a fat, lonely guy as the protagonist. It's supposed to be a straightfoward, realistic look at his hopes and frustrations. Anyone see it?

I can't think of many movies at the moment where I felt sorry for an overweight man, but "Shallow Hal"'s Rosemary (Gwyenth Paltrow) is an obese person I felt deeply sympathetic for.

Definatelty any John Candy film...he was one special actor and person, and he is missed.

Also a little known film starring Jackie Gleason called Gigot....no it's not the dumb comedy tv show...it's a story about a bum who helps out a little girl and her ..umm...slightly out of control mother....you have to see this film to believe it.

Pruitt Taylor Vince. He was also in Mumford, Nobody's Fool (like everyone else in that film, he was wonderful) and played the numbnuts Sherrif in Nurse Betty. He generally plays guys with a normal amount of dignity, or at least, (like the Sherrif), if they have problems, it's not solely related to their weight. He also did a nice guest spot on the short-lived (but very good) ABC medical drama Gideon's Crossing as a Cancer patient.

This maybe a little off topic, but coming from a black man,I gotta admit that the fat guy does get killed off more often in movies than us black folk...

Sydney Greenstreet in The Maltese Falcon is probably my favorite.

Unless Jabba the Hutt counts...

I definately agree with SykkBoy. in Full Metal Jacket's (9/10) Private Piles is one of the most tragic characters I've seen. Great performance.

How could you all forget Vern from Stand by Me, played by the now not so chubby Jerry O'Connell. All he ever wanted was his pennies...Now that I think about it, Lardass, from the same film, should also be included as a "lovable fat guy."

I always feel bad for the fat kid in Friday the 13th pt.5:A new beggining. Not only is he overweight but slightly retarted as well. He was just trying to help with the chores and offers some shit head a chocolate bar and the bastard axe's him up, poor duder...

is axe a verb?
