Matrix:
By far one of the best movies ever made. The combination of a new, complex plot, a stellar cast (well now they are), good costumes, dream worthy settings, and all the special effects you'll ever need. This movie has started to revolutionize the film industry (1-800 collect commercial, Scary Movie, car commercials) and will continue to advance film to a new level. Matrix brought home four Oscars out of the four that it was nominated for, however unfortunately it wasn't nominated for a best picture....oh yeah action movies can't win Oscars...the academy needs help. 20 years from now this will be our "Star Wars" especially with the 2 up and coming sequels to the movie, Matrix 2 and 3, hopefully they will be as good or better than the first. And Carrie Anne Moss will become a star, mark my words, she is an amazing actress...by the way this is her first movie here in the States.
Gladiator: Gladiator opened up with one of the most fabulous sequences in film that exists...maybe even better than Saving Private Ryan's beach sequence. It then continued with an ensemble of great acting, wonderful shots, a respectable plot for an action movie, cool special effects (roman coliseum shot was amazing...tiger could have been improves) and an artistic bloodbath (maybe even better than American Psycho). You get the same type of vibe from this movie as you do from watching a Rocky movie, and the the finger up and down (signifying life and death for gladiator) was a nice touch whether or not it was historically accurate. Even though the ending was not as strong as the rest of the movie it was still very good for what Ridley had to work with. One shot that I really like was when crowe brushed his fingers through a field of wheat, the shot was repeated maybe too much, but it stuck in your head and gave you relief from the bloodbath. Like Carrie Anne Moss....you will be seeing Russell Crowe more often then ever, after this amazing performance.
SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION:
This movie is still entertaining after watching it 10 times. It's plot structure is better than almost any other movie ever made and many of it's shots have been immortalized in our culture, such as the shot when he's in the rain after getting out of the tunnel. The movie is packed with great actors, Morgan Freeman, Tim Robbins, and some minor character who have appeared in many movies after. One of the best parts of Shawshank Redemption, and this can only be done on TV. with commercial breaks, is that after he escapes the prison you think the movie is over, and yet there comes another half and hour of astounding film-making right after the break. The movie is then concluded with a well-done beach scene that was not into the movie until final revisions, I'm glad that they put it in.
------- if you want me to comment on the other movies on my list just ask....I got tired of writing after 3.
By the way if you're wondering why some movies didn't make the list such as Sixth Sense (I was told the ending) and other movies such as godfather and casino, haven't got the chance to see them.
