This may not be the right place to post this and it has probably been brought up before but the other day I saw the price for a movie for the PSP. They are the full price of a new DVD! So for instance, if you had a PSP and wanted to buy a movie what would you do? Would you forget the tiny screen and get the DVD with the extras or would you by the basic movie just so you can watch it anywhere or would you buy both and waste your money? Perosnally I think it's a rip off.

HELL NO!!! Its is a fucking rip off. It is the same price of a DVD and you get a shit load of extras but not on the UMD FOR the PSP. just get the dvd with the extras.

UMD movies are shockingly priced for what you actually get. That's why (for now) i'm happy to download movies in DIVX format and convert them to MP4. I can then dump them onto my 1GB memory card with no significant drop in picture quality (providing I take care when doing the conversion).

I just can't get over the fact that a movie like Alien Vs. Predator is seeling around the £20 mark, the actual 2 disc DVD set is cheap than that! What makes it even more worrying is that the UMD version does not have any features and the box claims to be 'almost DVD quality' (something along those lines, I remember being stunned that it suggested 'almost'). So if Sony have their way, we should buy our collections again, for a higher price and missing out the extra features so we can watch movies on the move. I say keep the PSP for games and use a portable DVD player for movies. It'll be interesting to see the sale results of the PSP movie format, I can imagine people buying 1 or 2 titles for the sheer thrill but staying clear after that.

I completely agree with you guys. I think the whole thing is totally ridiculous. I really don't know who in their right mind is buying these UMDs when they're around $10 more than the DVD on average. And you can only play it on the PSP. I think everyone pretty much agrees that its worthless, I'm just curious to see how long the fad lasts.

I wouldnt buy one but I would agree with Psychocandy. Rip those bad boys from your own DVD collection onto the memory card. If you shop around you can get UMD's for £13.99 or so but even still there is no point buying one over a DVD.
I know the PSP is new and all but I read that sales in the US are booming for UMD's?

I'm not bothering buying a PSP either. I never have the need for a postable system and I think the idea of watching a movie on a screen the size of a credit card is dumb. I use a postable DVD player to watch movies on the move (rarely) and even though the screen is much bigger than the PSP it still is uncomfortable at times. I really can't see UMD movies being big in the future, they are a marketing time bomb, as soon as the hype dies down so will sales. I guess teenagers will be all over these things in a desperate attempt to look cool but the adult market will generally not be that dumb as to pay double just so they can watch a movie whilst traveling.

The PSP is a great little system. If you don't feel the need for one, then by all means, don't concern yourself with it. However, if you are in the market for a portable gaming system then you can certainly do a lot worse than the PSP.
If you have no intention of buying a PSP... then why get into a debate as to whether or not you would rebuy a movie for it that you already own on DVD? I mean.... of course you won't... why would you buy a UMD that you can't play?
That's just silly.

IMO the PSP is slightly under-rated in terms of games. Whenever they are shown or talked about people tend to talk about watching movies and not playing games. Even stores stock more UMD movies than games which I find slightly odd considering it's primarily a games console. I'm not bashing the PSP when asking the 'rebuy' question but I am asking whether or not it's a good move by Sony to release stripped down movie titles at such a high price. Personally I think Sony should focus more on their games rather than try to offer movies aswell.

I think the whole thing is really stupid, actually. If there was something that would play on a DVD player and also a PSP, then I'd say sure, I'd get some movies if I had a PSP. I don't plan on getting one. It's what I have my PS2 for. If I want to play games, that's what I'm playing them on. I have my portable DVD player if I am bored sometime, like if I'm on an airplane or something. They should have movies for PSP, which can also play on your DVD player and then one just for a DVD player. Like in the same box it would come with a PSP and then one for the DVD.
