Interesting oped article. Speculative, but worth consideration especially by those of us who distrust the Pentagon...some snippets:

.....In more than two years since the United States initiated hostilities against Iraq, there has never been a positive identification of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
Never.
That doesn’t mean that he doesn’t exist; it simply suggests that prudent people will challenge the official version until his whereabouts and significance in the conflict can be verified......

....It’s odd how Al-Zarqawi appears at the precise coordinates of America’s bombing-raids, and then, miraculously vanishes unscathed from the scene of the wreckage. This would be a remarkable feat for anyone, but especially for someone who only has one leg.....

....Last week the Imam of Baghdad’s al-Kazimeya mosque, Jawad al-Kalesi said, that “al-Zarqawi is dead but Washington continues to use him as a bogeyman to justify a prolonged military occupation….He’s simply an invention by the occupiers to divide the people.” Al-Kalesi added that al-Zarqawi was killed in the beginning of the war in the Kurdish north and that “His family in Jordan even held a ceremony after his death.” .........(AFP)

Yeah and Louis Farrehkahn (?sp) is going around saying that we deliberately blew up the levees so the poor black people in New Orleans could die. I am tired of all these conspiracy theories. I know some people are into them but not me. I htink this guy does live and why would we make him up- we have been criticized for not catching him so if we make him up we should make up the fact that we killed him too.

Al-Zarqawi is Bush's boogeyman. Whether or not he actually exists is debatable. But he is probably worth more to the administration alive, not unlike OBL, to perpetuate his war on terror. The thing is that the terror attacks in Iraq are all due to the US invasion in what was previously a stable region.

I have no clue if Zarqawi is alive, dead, or captured but I have no clue why this administration would want a prolonged 'military occupation' in Iraq. The situation in Iraq is killing Bush here at home.

Of course the attacks in Iraq are due to our invasion. Not sure if anyone disputes that. A stable region after we bombed the shit out of them the first time. :P

Stable under a brutal and murderous dictator? I don't consider that stable. Iraq is going through a time of transition and transition is hard. Our country has a delightful history of violence as we worked out our issues- the Revolutionary war, the civil war, the civil rights movement etc. It is not abnormal for this country to fight out issues between them, but it is abnormal for the terrorists to take over and run thigs before the good guys get their feet under them.
