MANATEE - Parents of more than 25 percent of Manatee County's high school students have removed their children from military recruiting lists, according to school officials.

As of Monday, the names of 2,792 students had been stricken from recruiting lists provided by the school district to military recruiters upon request. That figure accounts for 26.5 percent of the 10,525 students in Manatee County's six traditional public high schools.

I don't agree with recruiters going to schools to talk to kids who are under 18. I think once the kids are 18 they can talk to them but as a parent I have a problem with anyone talking to my minor child without my knowledge.

Military recruiters in America seem really bad. I heard about how a person went to a mall or something and the army had this area set up with rock climbing and all these activities. If you signed up for the army you could go around in the area. Plus the navy had a website up that would give you 3 free iTunes downloads if you signed up.

These whole flashy ways of getting people to join really bothers me, but I don't feel bad for the idiot that joins up because he rock climbs for a minute or gets three songs. At least in Canada the army doesn't go around and harrass people (A member of the Canadian army told me that Americans have a quota to fill for getting recruitments).

I'm glad for the parents to take them off the list as long as their kid let them. If they are in the army though, that's another story.

There is nothing wrong with a military recruiter going to a job fair at a school the same way their is nothing wrong with a fire man, police officer, or Mc Donalds recruiter to go.

Yeah, recruiters do things like that all the time, but on the same note is so so obvious and transparent what they are doing. There isn't a single person who is against going into the military, but joined because the recruiter bought them a milkshake.

Well that's mainly due to the fact that you don't need anyone to join your army. ]

Oh you heard it, must be true!

I got maybe two calls from the marines.

That was it.

On no military recruiters are evil

My wife, when getting out of high school, had calls from them on a daily basis for about two weeks, and eventually put them on call block. A few days later, two recruiters came to her door during dinner time trying to explain why she was making a bad choice in not enlisting.

Oddly enough -- where did we go to school at? You got it! Bayshore High School, Manatee County. A lot of the recruiting techniques are unique to different areas. From my understanding, in Manatee County, the college bound rate is a bit lower than most other demographically similar areas - perhaps this explains the difference - dunno.

But that doesn't make them evil, that just means some are more aggressive than others.

You can quit McDonalds, the fire dept. or the police force - so there are blatantly obvious differences there.

You can't sign a contract with the military until you are 18 or unless you are 17 and have a parental waiver. An 18 year old can do whatever they want with their lives.

Good point - That's another difference between the military and other jobs.

I don't know - Do they only go to job fairs? When I was in school (Again, Manatee County) they sent them into the class room. I missed trigonometry when they came for recruiting to my school. Not that I wasn't missing enough of it on my own. I gave them a wrong number though. Not to get out of it, but because I used to always think it was funny to give authorities a wrong number.

It's kind of different everywhere I guess, based on the comments being made here.

Not at mine. Just two guys sitting at a table in the cafeteria during the fair. Truth be told there is no national policy for recruiting, whether it be students or any one else. So if the recruiting station near you is using shady tactics, it is because of the officer running that particular post, not the military in general.

Yeah, I figure it is like everything else -- I get people calling me to buy the paper, and some are like, "Alright, have a good day" but I've had some who've gotten pretty ridiculous. The military has a bit more pull, I guess - I can't image the paperboy showing up at my door with his buddy, and some subscription forms. I don't even think it's a "manager" thing with the military - it's like some recruiters are just more ruthless than others. I've worked telemarketing, and I was always pretty chill, but some people got a kick out of the aggressive tactics - thought they were on Glengary Glen Ross and so-on. Those people never actually sold that much more, but that/s beside the point.

Well if the military didn't give quotas for the officers to fill they might not resort to that. Unless the officer gives those out too.

Then again, you need your army. Why don't you be like Canada, you know, act like pussies? ;)

Qoutas are just a tool to make sure the recruiters are doing their jobs. There was actually a recruiter for the navy who went to one of my job fairs and lied about certain things. He was severly punished to say the least. Believe me lying to applicants is highly discouraged.

Then again, you need your army. Why don't you be like Canada, you know, act like pussies? ;)

You guys aren't pussies you just have the sweetest deal in history. You live directly above America. If anyone attacked your country or international interest not only would America back you, we would probably fight the war for you.

But if it wasn't for Canada, you guys would be pelted with rotten fish every time you left the country.

You intentions might sound noble, but the war would be fought because A) we're a part of Nato, so countries like Italy and Turkey would also help us fight the invaders and B) you government would likely help us out simply because of a fear of the invaders above might have a strategic advantage to move into America without your pesky navy to get in the way.

Besides, how could we get into a war? An independent that's started by us and some other country? We rarely get into fights that haven't been started by somebody else or didn't involve you guys as well.

I agree with you Mac. I said nothing of nobility. We would defend you because an attack on you is way to close to home for us.

It was hypothetical, that leads back to the original topic. Canada's military recruiters do not have quotas because there is new urgent need for military personal. There is no urgent need for military personal because you have the strongest military power as your next door neighbor.
