Movies
1. 8 1/2 - Simply brilliant as a movie, and enlightening as a dvd set. This is something every serious film fan must in the very least have seen.
2. Shawshank Redemption : 10th Anniversary - I love this film with all my might and unfortunately only got the 2-Disc Edition, not the Deluxe Collector's Item with the book and soundtrack because it was already sold out.
3. Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Special Edition - This is truly an awesome set. I love this movie so much, my favorite western. The extras, set, and transfer are all awe-inducing. Some terrific stuff here.
4. Dr. Strangelove : 30th Anniversary Edition - Great movie, the finest by Kubrick. The extras are delightful, that featurette with Macnamara is one of the finest produced things I've seen. Last year's greatest dvd.
5. The Star Wars Original Trilogy: SE - There are so many better dvds out there but I cannot say I have enjoyed one more than this. The extras could have been better and the films themselves are not how they were originally presented in theaters ( which is a good thing transfer wise but not film wise ). But the films themselves, no matter how ruined with the new scenes added are still classics and some of the best ever.
Television Shows
1. Freaks & Geeks - Yes, we all knew this was coming. How do you not include one of the best shows ever which is simply put loaded to the brim with special features and commentaries.
2. Lost: Season One - It is my my favorite show of last year, and this dvd, with an amazing HD Widescreen Transfer and an amazing quantity of special features is the thing fans have been looking for.
3. The Office: The Complete (BBC) Series - All the episodes presented in DVD glory. A substantial amount of special features but the genuine brilliantness of the show gets the spot in the top 5.
4. Firefly - One of my all-time favorites, and definately my Whedon favorite, is made into a very well done dvd. Good set; great show.
Watching Serenity tomorrow!
5. Honestly, this was a hard one. My favorite shows on dvd I mentioned and HBO did not pack special features and aren't price friendly. Ultimately, I decided to do a five-way tie.
a) Undeclared
b) Curb Your Enthusiasm Season Three
c) Simpsons Season 5
d) Black Adder - Series IV
e) Seinfeld Season Four
