The box office can be an unpredictable mistress of sorts on occasion. Sometimes the movies you expect to flop, end up becoming surprise money makers, then you get expected blockbusters that crumble in their performance. Then when looking at the US and Aus box offices, you have those that perform well in the states only to be a minor blip on the radar, and the US disasters or under performers that end up being much more equivalently successful down under. Then you get a movie like DEUCE BIGALOW: EUROPEAN GIGOLO that didn't do stellar business in the states, and wasn't expecting to do much down here. But yet there it is sitting at the top spot with a relatively neat $1,812,996 (US $20,846,096), enough to be the 23rd highest weekend opener for the year, and the 33rd best for the month of September. Although its #1 position is a shock to many, it's not entirely surprising given it was the final week of school holidays with teen boys swarming to typical gross out humour, little competition, Rob Schneider coming down under to promote the film, and coming off the original film which opened healthy in January 2000 to $2.23m on its way to a $10.34m total, enough to make it the 21st highest grossing film of that year. A double digit finish isn't in the cards for this film, but seeing as how US underperformers, and similarly critically attakced films like Bewitched ($9.76m), Herbie ($9.25m), and Miss Congeniality 2 ($8.00m) all surpassed expectations, anytihng is possible. As for the rest of the films, last weeks top 4 all kept up behind each other, each dropping one spot in favour of Deuce. THE DUKES OF HAZZARD slipped 48% but scored a nice $1,608,030, taking the Jessica Simpson comedy up to $5,966,804 (US $68,607,195). CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY melted a further 34%, but with its additional $1,565,631, the Johnny Depp vehicle is sitting pretty with a commanding $19,635,138 (US $225,767,722), moving it up a staggering 31 places on the All-Time charts, placing it at #70, with the likes of Dances With Wolves ($19.70m[/B]), A Beautiful Mind ($19.79m) and There's Something About Mary ($20.00m) all to be passed within the next few days. SKY HIGH and SHARKBOY... continue to rise as the holidays continued. The Kurt Russell flick upped 6% to $2,683,318 (US $30,853,187), whilst Robert Rodriguez's kiddie outing rose a huge 92% to $1,975,069 (US $22,709,635). Rachel McAdams did double duty at the end of the Top 10 this week as her two feautres out at the moment followed suit at #9 and #10. WEDDING CRASHERS exited the Top 5 after 6 weeks, and spends its 7th in release at #9 with accumulative total of $16,049,780 (US $184,542,745), pushing it up 8 places on the All-Time charts to #112, whilst the airborn thriller RED EYE is the lesser success at #10 with $3,280,149 (US $37,715,638) after 4 weeks. The follow up to the Oscar Winning Spirited Away, HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE surfaced at #12 with $152,270 (US $1,750,822). Before opening nationally this week, Russell Crowe had an advanced match with CINDERELLA MAN holding early screenings, bringing the drama $116,910 (US $1,344,248) going into its run.

THIS WEEK (September 29th): Firefly goes feature length; Jason Statham delivers on action; and it's punches all round for Russell, Ron & Renee.
