Had a bit of an anime evening tonight. I've been trying to find the time to get back into anime for a while now and have managed to stockpile a tidy little bundle of DVDs that i'd read some cool stuff about. Tonight I watched the following...
Ghost In The Shell: Innocence - 4.5 out of 5
Hellsing Episodes 1-3 - 4 out of 5 (overall)
I was impressed by Hellsing. It's a damn cool idea with plenty of style and even though the animation can be a little stilted (something that many series are guilty of) it still looks impressive. I like the various main characters and none of the episodes so far have came close to outstaying their welcome. Already the seeds of the arc plot have been planted and have begun to develop. Guess i'll watch another few episodes tomorrow night. Really enjoying this one.

The Vision Of Escaflowne Episodes 8-15. What an intensely fast paced series. So far it's been fantastic (except for some writing slips). I can't wait to finish it.

I didn't understand very much of the plot from the first episode, but the animation is pretty good an it has some amazing battle scenes.

Just watched an Escaflowne marathon. Watched 18-26 (end). I really REALLY loved this series, except the ending didn't suit for me
*SPOILERS*
I would've liked it so much more if Hitomi had stayed in Gaia.
But anyway, good show. I'll watch the movie next weekend. Also, I'm getting ready to watch the second episode of the new Guyver series.

Watched the first three episodes of Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex tonight. It's a lot more like the first movie than the recent Innocence. I think I would have preferred something less episodic. Something with a bit of an arc plot and characters that grew and changed as the series progressed. Still...very enjoyable for all that.
Episode 1 - 7 out of 10
Episode 2 - 8 out of 10
Episode 3 - 7 out of 10

Wow. This really engaged me on just about every conceivable level. The animation and design of both the characters and the world they inhabit was wonderful. The music courtesy of Joe Hisaishi was simply sublime. The story contained important messages without beating the viewer over the head with it. There were moments of humour. Moments of action and adventure. Moments of horror and jeopardy that had my pulse racing.
I can't believe it took me this long to see this. Now I REALLY need to read the Manga from which it was adapted. I think I recall reading that the movie only draws it's story from the first 400 or so pages of the 1000+ page epic. I've also read, and don't doubt, that the Manga is superior to the Anime in every conceivable sense. If that's the case then it must be something of a platinum masterpiece.
A solid 5 out of 5 for this one. Now I need to find another Ghibli fix before I begin to feel the gnawing pain of withdrawal. Hmmm. Kiki's Delivery Service looks like it might be just the ticket.

Everyone seems to be disturbed by that twist in Full Metal Alchemist. It's just so damned viscious, didn't think it would have the balls to do something like that. Great that you got around to watch it. But be warned, Season 1 (1-13) and 2 (14-25) are awesome but not nearly half as good as the rest of the show (eventhough both finales are great, S1's is totally humurous and 2's is one of the saddest -if no the saddest- of the entire series).
Anyway, I finally got my claws on Cowboy Bebop and I just watched the first 4 episodes. Godamn, that's one cool fucking series. Looks like I'll love it, what a soundtrack too.

Cowboy Bebop Session 05. Holy shit, what an episode. The moment when Spike 'falls' is one of the coolest I've seen in a series. Ever. I hope Vicious stays. Wow, this show really r0x0rz.
Getbackers Episode 13 and 14. Still an awesome series. The entire "Il" arc is beocming really interesting, how they put all the characters together.
Full Metal Alchemist Episode 23. I had already seen this series but since it's airing and I have a lot of free time, I'm rewatching. 2 more episodes to the S2 finale, which turns the show upside down.

Cowboy Bebop Session 06. Farfetched and bizzare, unlike what I expected after the fantastic 5th episode. It was still okay because of the cool-ass characters.
Getbackers Episode 15. This is getting SO epic, the "Il" arc is almost over, and the character interaction is more and more interesting (Love Kasuki-Shido getting ready to fight. Love that pairing).

Cowboy Bebop.
-Session 07: Good episode but nothing memorable, just all right.
-Session 08: This was fantastic. An awesome bounty, great action and a very touching finale.
-Session 09: Hilarious, I was waiting for Ed to finally join the cast, loved loved her (it's a her, right?).
-Session 10: Loved it because it was Jet-centric. More moments of real total emotion. Adored it.
-Session 11: Could be my favorite episode so far. It didn't add much in terms of character or plot, but I just love when characters engage on horror motifs. Very very fun, at times scary and really tense.
-Session 12/13: Holy fucking shit, what a cliffhanger, I adored this two-parter. Glen was an awesome character (what a twist in the end of 12) and Vicious is just so damned cool. Also, action packed.
LOVING this show. It is really proving to be the classic everyone says it is. Never thought I'd enjoy it as much as I am.

Chronologically, it's widely accepted that the movie takes place between episodes 22 ("Cowboy Funk") and 23 ("Brain Scratch"). So after you see episode 22, watch the movie again...you might just notice a few parallels...

People didn't like the ending? What the hell, it was perfect bittersweet. And my you certainly sped through that series. Glad you liked it.

But back to my anime-log.
Escaflowne - Girl In Gaia. At first I hated what they were doing with the series (which I loved). Hitomi's character being a whiny brat this time around and Van being a deranged psycho. Thankfully, I grew to like the direction they took it. Too bad the rest of the characters are only there to . . . please the fans and look badass with the new animation revamp, which kicked ass. I had a big problem with the final battle. *SPOILERS* (When they're about to fight, Yajuka (character I fucking adored in the show and looks massively badass in the movie) appears out of nowhere and kill Foken? Give me a break) At least the Dilandau/Van battle in the Guymelefs kicked ass, it was so damned intense. Also, good idea to notch up the violence in the movie, it seemed fitting for such hugely scoped fantasy. 8/10 (if you see the series before seeing the movie. 6/10 if you see it as standalone movie.
Cowboy Bebop Session 14 - 18. Still adoring this show, it hasn't chaffed and I'm glad because I was expecting a lot. I'll probably finish it today or tomorrow. The mushrooms episode is one of the funniest things I have ever seen.
. . . but on the not so pleasant news.
I just saw Akira for the first time. Godammit, talk about a dissapointment. I was expecting a twsting and bending mindfuck movie and got nothing to the vein. It might have the worst soundtrack I've seen in anime, ever. The character designs were fucking terrible (why was everyone so damned ulgy??), the plot wasn't complicated at all (or at least I think I got the entire thing as it went), it's just visually confusing (instead of having someone's body fall apart or something they have it grow huge and bubbly and grow throusands of eyes and fingers and . . . all that). The violence felt exploitive and uneeded almost, I understand most things, but does someone's face really need to be ripped off it gets shot? The character development was good (eventhough most characters annoyed the hell out of me), the animation was great and the action was great. 4/10. Thank god I rented it before buying it.

Many seems to hate it because the manga hasn't ended yet. From what I've heard the manga it's similar, up to about a third of the way through the anime, then the anime went off on its own whole spiel.
In the manga there never was a Lyra/Lyla or Dante... There's a bunch of characters from the far East, and other characters meet some different fates also.
I think Im going to start looking for the manga to see for my own. Im' looking forward to the movie too.

Watched the first episode of Last Exile this evening. I've read a lot of good things about this series and the first episode certainly suggests that there was no hyperbole involved. I liked pretty much everything about it. The only tiny problem is the incongruity of the two different animation styles on display. CGI and traditional cell animation have on occasion been used together to good effect (Ghost In The Shell: Innocence) but here they don't always look quite right together. Still a lovely looking show though. Anyway...4 out of 5 and i'm looking forward to seeing how this one progresses.

The moment when you see the POV of the main as the train hits him, the crushed umbrella flying next to the friend's head. And the screams with the other shot as the two guys explode. The so totally intense bit was the 'head' POV later on, with the girl taking a photo. It was insane.

True. I was watching the special features last night and they were talking about how the top people in anime usually limit what is released, they usually try and limit the stories to alot of action-- loud explosions and violence. And after hearing that, I began to realise how true it is. there aren't many Animes, with the expection of Tokyo Godfathers and a few others, that don't involve alot of explosions and violence.

Last night I watched Castle In The Sky. I don't throw the word masterpiece at a movie too often but in this case the word fits. Everything about this movie just shone. The level of imagination present in five minutes of this movie puts to shame 99% of the anime in existence (and pretty much 99% of the conventional animations out there...Disney should have been taking notes). Next up...Kiki's Delivery Service or Pom Poko. Haven't decided. But Castle In The Sky scores a solid 5 out of 5.

Ghost In The Shell for the first time. Good movie. I loved the universe it created, same for the (very little there is) action. The animation is BEAUTIFUL. Too bad the philosophy is so boring and the movie is slow and pretty dull. It felt like 200 hours long.

Full Metal Panic! Episodes 7 - 17. While I love the characters and how they plot the action episodes, I seem to enjoy more the hilarious Sagara and his lack of common sense in school. I guess I'll enjoy Fumoffu more. Don't get me wrong though, FMP! is amazing.
Gantz 2- 6. Totally exploitive, VERY violent and the nudity is constant . . . and I'm loving it to death. Sure, Kei's constant boners can be nixed and I don't need to see bobbling breasts every episode but the plot is extremely interesting (think: Battle Royale meets Silent Hill 4 with some more bizzareness), the characters developed and the humor works (I LOVED Gantz's scoring "Big Tits: 0 points. Tits too big. Walked around without panties too much." "Kei: 0 points. Has too many boners for staring at Big Tits."). I'm buying this shite.

Some I saw last week and didn't post:
Full Metal Panic! 18 - 24 (end).
Well it sure as hell is a good show. I love the characters and the "Whispered" plot is great. Gauron has to be the coolest character design ever (but then, the FMP designer is my favorite) and the ending was intense but I seem to enjoy more the comedic nature of . . .
Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu! 3 - 5.
What can I say. This is so hilarious I just love to watch it and keep watching it. Kaname is one of the funniest characters ever.
Gantz 7 - 13. Done with the "First Stage" and yes, definitely one of my favorite shows. The second game was creepy as hell with the "Yuzo-kun?". I loved the characters that survived (though it had a couple of ballsy kills) and the battle with "Final Boss" kicked major ass. Kato and Kei are two of my favorite characters in anime. And I just gotta love Gantz giving out the scores ("Sadako. 0 Points. Following Homo too much." "Who's Homo?").
Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' On Heaven's Door. It's the first time I saw it from beginning to end and it was AWESOME. What a great movie, it was great to see the bunch again. 9/10.

What's funny is that that that episode's plot is emotional even knowing it's a joke. If they had done something like that in a serious live-action movie, it'd be Battle Royale caliber heartbreaking.
As for your question, I really don't know. See, Animax has only aired thr first 4 or so episodes, so Tessa hasn't shown up. Naruto Episode 1.
Now, I have a question to those who've seen the show. This was reccomended to me after I said how much I thought Full Metal Alchemist was the best anime I had seen. After Naruto's first episode, I'm a little weary of continuing. I mean, it was good (though Naruto himself bothered me a lot), but the show is like 200 episodes long and I want to know if it's really worth it.
The question is, does this really get the depht/intensity/seriousness FMA gets? I mean, both look pretty childish looking (Naruto moreso, I think) but with FMA, 2 minutes into episode 1 we see a 10 year old getting two limbs ripped off before seeing the gruesome body of his dead mother and that was immensely intense. I'm not really asking if the show itself is violent, I'm just asking if it's a 'children' anime (like FMA isn't) or does it get deeper?

Anyways, I'm up to volume 13 of the GantZ Manga. I was hoping that the manga would also have the anime's 'game 4' so I could understand what the hell happened in the end of the anime. Too bad it branched off its own. Good news is that the new arc after the third game (which we all know how THAT turned out) is fantastic. The new characters (Izumi and Tae) are amazing, especially the latter. Never thought Kei could get in such a sweet relationship. The violence was extreme and they wasted some characters I never thought would bite it. I love the uber tenseness of the events leading to the fifth game (game 4 in the manga isn't that great, and very short) and the new rule Gantz has set. This one will be a slaughter.
It's the first time I've read Manga so closely and I'm enjoying every second of it.

Urotsukidoji: Legend Of The Overfiend (movie version) - poor dubbing and crude animation but does have some nicely done scenes as well, plot is confusing though thanks to it being only 2 thirds of the whole thing. got very violent at times with loads of blood and gore with a load of demon sex thrown in - 5/10
Urotsukidoji: Legend Of The Demon Womb (movie version) - more of the same except less violence and demon sex - 5/10

3x3 Eyes 6-7 - while the first half took its time to get going, the second half was a lot better, the story improves a lot, it gets bloodier and thers more horror themes in it some of which i really dug - 7/10

Final Fantasy Unlimited 1- 26 - very disappointing, terrible animation and CGI that doesnt fit in with the traditional style. the plot and characters are uninteresting and at times i was driven to fastforward through some sections. its obviously aimed at little kids since its so cutesy and childish in how the characters act and are drawn, also the stupid music that plays when the stupid Chokobo appears - 3/10

I don't much care about the various styles of character designs (the only one that looks great is Kiba- I mean, Kaze). It's very repetitive (they show you the entire posing dance everytime someone's going to do someone).
But wait, I thought it was only 25 episodes long. My set only has 25 (the Thinpack).
However, I disagree about the music, I can never dislike Nobuo Uematsu's work. The chocobo music is silly but I enjoy it since it's the classic chocobo theme from just about every game.

It's pretty good, though I don't seem to enjoy those uber depressing animes (and EoE is my favorite movie ,go figure). The violence was much too extreme for me, as well (could've lived without seeing seven year old girls graphically exploding in half) but overall, it's a very good series that has some fantastic character development (moreso for a 13 episode series). The finale was a real tear-jerker.

Pretty good so far. The animation is fantastic. Its traditional animation coupled with cgi. The effect is pretty sweet. The series is a new spin on Akira Kurosawa's Samurai Seven. The major difference is that its set in the future with the Samurai protecting the village from these giant mecha.

Just finished up the entire Vision of Escaflowne series. At first I was a little taken aback and didn't care for it that much during the first few episodes. THen before I knew it I found my self really caring about the characters and the direction each one was taken in this beautifully drawn anime. I read early on the X-Nightcrawler wasn't a big fan as to how it eneded. I have to disagree, I thought the ending had just the right mix of Wizard of Ozish type charm to really bring closure to the series. It took awhile to get going but this series was just the thing to renew my hunger to watch more anime. Next up, the movie that came with the set and after than Wolfs Rain.
