It finally opened. I've been waiting for over 3 years for this movie since I first heard about it. Henson studios making a movie in the tradition of Labyrinth and the Dark Crystal.... I was thrilled when I heard that. I was even more thrilled when I found out that Neil Gaiman would be do the script and Dave Mckean would be directing. Well last night I saw it and this is what I thought:

First off it's a beautifully crafted movie. They only had a budget of 4 million dollars which is pretty much nothing in the world of film. Yet with that money and with the sweat of Mckeans brow this movie is visually stunning. Sure most of the actors wear masks and you can see the budget restraints pretty clearly when it takes place in the "real world" but once the movie transitions to it's own twisted version of a wonderland it's unlike anything I have ever seen. Gaiman and Mckeans story is a great one, capturing that fairy tale essence and using it to mold a movie that takes place on the fringes of dreams. The main character is a really good actress and she carries her part well but the creatures that inhabit the otherworldy realm really do steal the show. If you enjoy any sort of surrealsim or are just a fan of good ol fashioned fairy tale storytelling, you have to see this movie!

The plot reminds me of a more tripped out version of Paperhouse...that film didn't have the luxury of having Jim Henson Co. work on the GORGEOUS visuals that this one seems to have.

I thought the same thing about the Paperhouse comparison,.

I was surprised during the updates I would find while waiting for the release date that The Henson co. Had little to do with the look of this film. They pretty much just financed this flick. The whole visual style is mostly due to Dave Mckean and the animators working under him.

I just saw this again last night and I have to say it still held up with a second viewing. I think this is my #1 of the year so far.
