Haven't noticed any threads on this so I thought I'd drop one here.

Saw it on MSNBC today that Unicef has created a commercial that highlights the attrocities being suffered by the ex child soldiers in Africa and it shows the Smurfs, the little blue dudes very popular in the 80's getting blown up by an unseen enemy.

WHAT THE F**K IS THIS ABOUT?!!

The jerk-offs that created the spot defend the ad trying to make the contrast between the two, but I'm not buying it.

IT'S THE F**KING SMURFS!

You wanna show those poor children with swollen bellies and flies landing on them? There's a haunting image.

For every overly pretentious filmmaker that's gone into the wild OR the middle of a warzone to capture the "haunting images" for the sake of their medium:

My biggest complaint is the assholes that try to defend using the Smurfs for their message of "awareness".

Awareness of what?! That you can scare the shit out of a bunch of Belgian children if they happened to see this?!

(Supposedly, they're only running this ad in Belgium.)

In my 33 years, I've never seen a popular cartoon character or characters used in such a horrible manner.

I DID see an old commercial for WInston cigarettes with Flintstones.

The key point here, completely missed by the opening post, is that this ad is shown on Belgian tv. The creator of the Smurfs, Peyo, is Belgian. PEYO=BELGIAN. SMURFS=BELGIAN. AD=BELGIAN. And therein lies the motivation and idea behind the whole thing.

My point is that in this world of SO many "uncorrupted" children surfing the Internet (because these kids are smarter than most people think), they're doing SO much to police the Internet, shutting down sites that they think are bad for kids, it's extremely easy to access these images.

I wouldn't want my child seeing this, Belgian or not.

You complain about how they should show the dying babies and all that shit instead of using the smurfs. Well they do show it all the time. Ever see those infomercials for the 99 cents a day bullshit? It's all dead and dying people, mainly children.

Nobody is doing shit to put a hand in and help these people, so people have to resort to tactics like blowing up the smurfs in order to make people pitch in a little.

Want these ads to stop? Go donate some money to the cause so they'll actually start helping and won't need to advertise.

If it works, I'm completely for it. People need to be aware of this kind of stuff -- if showing Smurfs getting killed is what it takes, then great.

I only wish they showed it earlier than 11pm or whatnot. So kids could see it and go "Mommy, Daddy, what the fuck is this? Does this kind of shit happen? The Unisfyfy people are right, we need to fucking do something! We need to!". Maybe that'll wake some people up.

The image in of itself doesn't bother me.

But I was on comcast.net - and they had the iamge on the front page, right next to an actual image of some Iraq stuff -- The captions were strangely familiar too.

I didn't think that was cool - It was kind of a competing image.

I agree with Trail_Blazer - that image looked funny to me (in a sick sort of way). I don't get why the used Smurfs instead of real images - could they not get a camera or anything into the country?

Maybe they'll use Fraggle Rock for the genocide ad. :D
