Plot: Based on Steve Martin's bestselling novella, SHOPGIRL is a funny and poignant story of love in the modern age. The film catches a glimpse inside the lives of three very different people on diverse paths, but all in search of the same thing. Mirabelle (Claire Danes) is a "plain Jane" overseeing the rarely frequented glove counter at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills. An artist struggling to keep up with even the minimum payment on her credit card and student loans, she keeps to herself until a rich, handsome fifty something named Ray Porter (Steve Martin) sweeps her off her feet. Simultaneously, Mirabelle is being pursued by Jeremy (Jason Schwartzman), a basic bachelor who's not quite as cultured and successful as Ray. When fate steps in, the outcome may not always be a storybook ending, because in the end...it was life.

Starring:S teve Martin, Claire Danes, Jason Schwartzman, Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, Frances Conroy, Sam Bottoms, Rebecca Pidgeon, Joshua Snyder

MPAA Rating: R (for some sexual content and brief language)

Release Date: October 21, 2005 (NY, LA, Toronto)

SHOPGIRL looks like a really human picture and something I've really grown to anticipate.

I can't even begin to think of how long I have been waiting for this film to come out. I just can't get over how perfect the casting really is...

We are at the one week countdown.

Happy to think that Steve Martin is actually starring in something decent-looking compared to what he's done in recent years (CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN, anybody?).

I think it looks great! Reviews have been less than steller though.

Whatever...the cast is awesome and it'll be interesting to see Martin in this role. I have NEVER seen him serious so I look forward to it. Change is always nice...

Try The Spanish Prisoner or Leap of Faith for his more dramatic work.

I think this one might be his ticket back to better roles. In recent years, he has been asked to do mostly family-oriented stories.

I have never read the book. But the movie itself looks pretty good.

The book is really short-- it's a quick read...I read it just to prep for the film....helps give a good idea of the tone of the film...

I saw it-- managed to sneak my way into a sneak preview...

The casting was perfect-- honestly...Shwartzman was hysterical-- actually added more to the film than the character did to the book..also, it was dark, just as I expected it to be. I was a little worried that it would be too lovey dovey-- but it stayed with the darker tone of the book. Overall, I was impressed...

*Minor spoilers*

I was able to see this film yesterday with HHH123007, and I have to say, it’s not that bad… on a personal level, I gave the flick a 7/10 only because it contains the most beautiful ass shot I’ve ever seen in a movie. On a technical level, it’s more of a 6/10… plenty of throughlines aren’t clearly explained in the film. Including Mirabelle’s desire to become an artist (which, apparently is a big deal to boot), although suggested at the beginning and you see her drawing once or twice in the film, she doesn’t show us that she wants to become an artist by any means. I didn’t like that.

And if anyone sees the movie, please explain to me how Jeremy becomes rich from his stencil drawings...

There is nothing better than a wonderfully filmed woman's ass. In any movie.
Shame on boobs lovers! Grow up! Asses (w) are sexier! :D  ;)

I don't think he became rich, he just became classier. After reading all those books and what not on the bus-- he learned what he needed to do. So he started dressing nicer, cleaned his apartment up, and traded in his junk car for like a Hyundai or something-- he wasn't supposed to be richer-- just more put together than he was.

The nice part was that he still kept the warmth that he had even when he became cleaner. He was still just as sweet as he had been before the makeover-- like when he yells in the gallery that it's his girlfriend....

Am I the only one who thinks this movie has the exact same plot as Rushmore? Old man and young guy both fall in love with middle aged woman? Heck, it even has Jason Swartzman playing the same character.

I could see the older guy and younger connection, but Claire Danes is middle aged? And just judging by the trailers (I haven't seen the movie yet), Schwartzman doesn't appear to be anything like his character in Rushmore.

My take on it is that she wants to become an artist, but she is sort of stuck in a rut. Her life isn't fulfilling and that is having a detrimental impact on her creative juices. The desire to work on her art isn't where she wishes it would be.

Also, Jeremy does not become rich. I believe that the rock star buys him the suit, and his new car is not an expensive one.

I loved the movie. Much more dramatic and melancholic than I expected, which pleasantly surprised me. The writing is superb and the cast is perfect. I am not a fan of Danes, but she is excellent. Overall, a high quality romantic dramedy. Those are hard to come by.

8/10

Hello there friends,

I must say, I just saw this movie tonight, and, the entire drive home, I was in a very good mood, such a lovely film, first of all I must say, I am a fan of Claire Danes now, she is a very good actor, as well as beautiful, I thought her charactor was a natural girl, not to overdone, or too underdone...

Steve Martin plays his part with a calm, collected feel, and even though, he is using Danes charactor in a way, you can't help but feel sorry for him, I mean a man that can't commit, and can't say he loves a women, at the end of the movie, it looks like that flaw almost had a big effect on him...

Jason Schwartzman plays a charactor suited just for him, a grunge, sort of shy, a little timid if you ask me, doesn't really have everything together when he meets Danes charactor, but, through out the movie, he does come together, and he works out in the end...

All in all, very good movie, very nice cast, I would call it a drama/romance/comedy of sorts, this one is aimed at the adult crowd I would believe, but, then again, I'm only twenty...

See this, take your girlfriend, your wife, yourself, a friend

Thank you
