View Full Version : Domino wasn't *THAT* bad!

Jesus H Christ, all I'm seeing on the net is how terrible Domino is and how Tony Scott is the anti christ. Here is why they are wrong.
1. The editing wasn't THAT bad. I was much more annoyed about the editing of Armageddon, Man on Fire, and Spy Game then this film. The quick cuts make sense in this movie because it is written like an LSD trip (remember Natural Born Killers?)
2. The Script had some great lines. When Mickey Rourke quoted Pat Benatar, I was rolling in the aisle. Yes, alot of the plot didn't make since but nether did a lot of plot of Donnie Darko (If you didn't check out the websites).
3. The characters were cool. "Alf" was the man. I loved that they included an Afgani bomb expert in the script. The characters played by Macy Gray and Monique were hilarious. Walken and the 90210 duo were funny.
4. Mickey Rourke and newcomer Edgar Ramirez are Bad Ass Mother Fuckers.
5. You got to see Keira Knightley's tits.
I am not saying that the movie is a masterpiece, but there are a lot worse films out right now in theatres. This is hardly the worse movie of the year.

That's not really a good thing. What was it the one character called them? Mosquito bites?
She's more attractive when (partially) clothed.

Judging by viewing her tits as a 16 year old (she was 16) in THE HOLE, I can personally testify that she has beautiful tits.
And this comes from a fellow 16 year old.

I don't know a single person who was confused after Donnie Darko. It was pretty straight forward by the time the ending explained what had happened.

SPOILER WARNING
How could anyone figure out that Donnie was in alternate future by just watching the movie (without looking at the website). They never explain that he is in an alternate reality. I had to look up the manipulated dead thing to figure out Frank.

You do now.
Of course you're probably being sarcastic.

Okay, so not EVERYONE I knew got it apparently.
But seriously, there are plenty of clues throughout the movie. Though I was already familiar with alt. universe theories, I don't think I knew anything that wasn't explained in the movie.
I haven't seen it for a couple years, so bare with my memory....
SPOILER _ DONNIE DARKO -----
When he was talking to that science teacher (?), they talk about the time travel theory. They talk about alternate universes. They talk about time traveling in alternate universes too, I think. Why would they have a scene like that?
They talk about the predestination thing -- So by the time Darko is at the party I figured out that he was following that thing around because there was some time travel element.
The entire idea that events were being repeated, as if Donnie had been there before
Then at the end, when they show the vortex thing, and it goes all the way back to the crash -- by that time they'd talked about worm holes enough that you could figure out that there was a time travel element, and since they'd talked about the alternate realitcy stuff --- 1+1....
I've never even been to the website, or have seen the Director's Cut, which from what I've beeen told makes it more clear -- Everything that leads up to what happens is very well fleshed out in the original version. I knew something was up by the time Darko was talking to that science guy that there was some time travel element -- then the rest just came together.
I thought it was really well explained, while not giving away too much until the end - and that's why it's such a good movie.
On top of the dialogue talking about time travel, predestination, and worm holes, there were plenty of visual clues -- The one at the end, with the worm hole, pretty much showed everything since it went back to the point in the movie where everything started getting weird, and noted that he was dead. Since the movie talked about time travel, and worm holes - and not ghosts and spirits -- I kind of thought it was somewhat obvious -- Darko was like a spirit that refused to die (See Jacob's Ladder) -- They even have voice overs during key scenes refering back to the theories if I remember correctly.
Seriously - I didn't know people had a hard time with this one. Sorry for overstating myself.
My arguement has always been with people over whether it was a time travel movie, or a teen drama.

Back on topic, Domino was NOT a horrible movie by any means... It wasn't as good as Man on Fire, IMO but it still held my attention and entertained me throughout...
I thought the movie was over-long and definately had some nonsensical scenes (Springer scene/absurd desert love scene, etc.) but there was plenty of good one liners by Rourke's character, gore (lopped arm) and other fun scenes of action and swearing that made said movie most definately watchable for someone lookin to kill 2+ hours! :p

Rourke's reaction to the porn film was classic; "I wanted to see how this ends," or something like that. Awesome.

Well I don't see what the outrage is then. Pretty much every review I've read has stated that the movie is a convoluted mess, but still an easy 2 hours to kill. Or at least that was the summary from Joblo and the Orlando Review's review.
And who are these people that talk for days about the exact same thing? I always thought part of staying on topic was keeping up with the conversation. These are the same people who get distracted when dirty talk comes up in the bedroom. "Hey, enough about my ass, baby. I'm trying to do something here."

I may be the only one here, but I LOVED Domino. It was fast, fun, gory, exciting, and not overdone with "style" like Man on Fire was. One of my favorite movies of the year. I could follow the plot for most of the story, too, which made me feel proud.

I agree that those two scenes were really pointless, but you have to admit that the blacktino Springer scene was pretty darn funny.
I'm happy to say that I really enjoyed Domino. It was funny, it was intriguing, and above all else it was highly entertaining.
