Steve Carell was given a nice round of lovin' over the weekend as his comedic stint as THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN topped the charts with an easy $2,125,688, the 19th best opening for the year, and with last week's barely there advance screenings, the Paul Rudd accompanied comedy is up to $2,182,424 (US $25,093,834). Losing a soft 27% and knocking out to #2 was last week's victor CINDERELLA MAN, which added an additional $1,010,472, sending the Russell Crowe drama to an underwhelming $3,286,264 (US $37,785,949). John Cusack and Diane Lane debuted their romance at #4 this week with a $970,699 (US $11,161,240) launch for MUST LOVE DOGS. The opening was reasonable for the stars and the genre, but was unable to match the duo's last romcom outings, Cusack's Serendipity ($1.2m), and Lane's Under The Tuscan Sun ($1.2m). Accumulating a much heftier total than I would've predicted, THE DUKES OF HAZZARD spends its 4th week in play, dipping 49%. All up, Jessica Simpson's Daisy Dukes have sprouted out $9,259,844 (US $106,471,056), placing it at #14 on the 2005 charts ahead of such outings as Herbie: Fully Loaded ($9.25m), The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy ($8.76m), and The Aviator ($8.52m). The gritty Aussie outback period piece THE PROPOSITION, featuring the likes of Guy Pearce, John Hurt and Ray Winstone, surfaced at #11 with a handful of glowing reviews and $427,392 (US $4,914,216) in receipts. After 9 weeks of making audiences laugh, those WEDDING CRASHERS, Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn are seeing their time coming to a close as their comedy sits at #20. Together they have managed a very fine $16,561,137 ([COLOR=red]US $190,422,404), signalling it as the 6th highest grossing film of the year, and the 103rd of all-time.
THIS WEEK (October 13th): Cameron and Collette take a walk in each other's shoes; Rob's rejects return; and the Russians hope to give us a scare.
