I was totally bored this afternoon, and after looking at all of my movies and not being able to decide on anything, I ventured downstairs to my parents VHS collection (which consists of maybe 8 movies) and selected 'Ghost' for my viewing pleasure.

Been a long, loooong time since I saw it, but I figured what the hell, I'll watch it. I enjoyed the movie, it was exactly as I remembered it "part love story part dark humor part creepy, but then, at the end, it totally lost me. Molly and 'Ghost' (I forget his name) were deeply, deeply in love. So much so that he frigging stayed behind after his death as a ghost because he didnt want to leave her. Finally, after saving her from the demon dude, he gets to go to heaven. But first, he gets to tell Molly, one last time, that he loves her. He says, as the light shimmers around his angelic figure: "I love you, Molly." She looks up at him, tears in her eyes, and says: "Ditto."

WHAT THE FUCK?!

The love of your life stayed behind as a spirit for you, ended up saving you life. is on his way to Heaven, says he loves you and all you can say is FUCKING DITTO?

What the hell happened in this movie? Did the writers just get lazy towards the end and say "Fuck it, I'm tired of writing dialouge, just have her say 'Ditto.""? I totally lost almost all respect I had for this movie when she said that. If I was Swayze, and I stayed behind as a Ghost to tell someone I love them, and they said "Ditto." in response, I woulda lost it! I woulda been like "WELL FUCK YOU BITCH! I SHOULDA JUST LET YOU DIE! NOT ONLY DID I DIE FOR YOU TO BEGIN WITH, I SAVED YOUR ASS AGAIN FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE AND ALL YOU CAN SAY IS 'DITTO'!? FUCK OFF WHORE! YOUR HAIRCUT MAKES YOU LOOK LIKE A MAN!" and then promptly gone to Hell instead of Heaven.

Ugh. Poor writing at its best folks.

****SPOILERS****

The reason she says "ditto" is because at the beginning of the film you see a bit of their relationship and Sam (Swayze) always has a tough time saying "I love you" back to her and always just ended up mustering a "ditto" instead. So, she says "ditto" to him at the end of the film when he finally says "I love you" (even though at that point he had more than proven how much he loves her). It was an inside joke betweem them.

Kind of sweet, really.

Ok, I didnt pick up on that.

Still, it threw me off. Movies shouldn't do that. They should be precise and to the point. "I love you" garners a "I love you, too" return. Ditto just doesnt cut it.

But you have to admit the line works perfectly for Empire. It fits the tone perfectly, and it sounds like something Han Solo would say. He never seems to take a situation seriously.
If that line popped up in a drama, like Ghost, it wouldn't quite have the same effect.

P.S - Good rant, had me laughing.

I don't see how "ditto" is lazy writing, anyway. It's not like writing "I love you, too" would have taken so much more effort. On the contrary; That's the obvious answer.

Man I qoute this line every time i'm pissed, to friends as the reason that Han Solo is the greatest charcter EVER. Closely followed by Indy. Love the way Ford brings out that nonchalant kind of attitude with both of them. Ya know facing certain death but fuck it. Something will turn up.

* SPOILERS *

I like when movies do those little quips. They spent a whole opening scene with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze. They also did a post-death scene with Whoopi Goldberg trying to convice Demi Moore that she sees Sam, and Demi doesn't believe her, so she says "Sam says I love you."

"Sam would never say that."

Demi walks away.

"DITTON!"

GASP! Demi turns around cause Sam would say that!

So at the end you get the whole reverse ditto thing.

I know Indiana Sev explained this and you said you missed it, but I really fuckin love when films do this. It was sweet, and it had meaning, and wasn't moronic or cliche. It served purpose in the film, and I wish there were more films that did these nice things, because they're fun to watch if you're really into the movie.

I think I read somewhere that whole little scene in Star Wars with Han saying "I know" in response to Leia's "I love you" line, was actually ad-libbed... They had to re-do the scene over and over again, and I believe his line was the old typical "I love you" reply, but instead chose to ad-lib the "I know" line out of frustration (cuz he had heard her say it a million times before in re-shoots) and it stuck! ;)

IndianaSev and many others are saying what I agree with -- It was well written.

If anyone has seen this particular THE SIMPSONS episode, the "ditto" line was along the same reasoning as when Lisa says "Smell you later." to Nelson.
