I miss these threads and I think Saw II is a good one to restart them. I can't make it a poll so I was hoping a mod could come by. Here are my suggested ranges...

Under $10 million
$10-15 million
$15-20 million
$20-25 million
$25-30 million
$30-40 million
Over $40 million

My prediction (vote) is a hopeful $25-30 million.

NightStalkerGtx

I'd love to say $40+ but in reality I'd say about $10-15, although with Halloween weekend it could go to $15-20. I'm just not sure. It would be funny it it opened better then The Fog and Doom (Since it's the lowest budget of them all).

It'll open better than The Fog and Doom. I don't think there's any question about that. Zorro, Prime and Weatherman are all going after a different audience, it's Halloween weekend and Fog and Doom will be an afterthought or nearly one by this Friday. On the other hand, I can't see it making $30 million or more. How many R-rated horror movies have had an opening weekend in that range? But, the first one is extremely popular with horror fans, the timing is right and I'm sure marketing will kick into high gear this week. I'll go with $20-$25 million.

^^^^^^^you do relalize how well advertised and hyped this movie is and the amount of theaters its getting 2800+ oh and its halloween weekend, so if it gets to the 10-15 mil range its only going to get pretty much a 4000 average per theater and im sry but how on earth is this going to get a less pta then the fog or doom hell even a smaller opening weekend when the original already toped doom and the fog opening weekend?

As they say, if you shoot low, you're bound not to be disapointed.
I remember when Texas Chainsaw Massacre came out I thought it would make about 8 million opening weekend and about 25 over all. Boy was I wrong!

Judging by the poll on the main site, I'm not the only one who thinks this will make between $10-20 million.

Can a MODERATOR come make this a poll please?

someguy

If you calculate the cost of advertising, maybe the actual cost is around 10-15 million.

Still, it will make a profit.

I would LOVE to see it make almost $30 million in its opening weekend and top out around $75 million, just like the also R-Rated 'Sin City.' But 'Sin City' also opened on around 400 more screens.

$20-30 million dollars. Everyone that saw the first wants to see that. At least a freakin' boat-load of people I know.

$30 million at least. The reputation of the first has spread well by word of mouth, and with Halloween literally around the corner, this is a big weekend. Hell, if Emily fucking Rose can do well . . .

At least I hope it does well.

I'm not trying to be a dick, so please don't be offended, but you can't use the "everybody I know wants to see it" argument as proof that a movie will open big. People said that about Serenity, as well as many others that have failed to light the box office on fire. In the big picture, it really proves nothing.

I'm pretty confident that Saw 2 will make mid-20s this weekend, although I wouldn't be at all surprised if it opened to over 30 million. The hype is there and the timing is perfect, i feel like everyone is talking about this movie. Zorro will be crushed.

Reread his post. He is not saying "Saw II will do well because everyone I know wants to see it." That is NOT his arguement. He said that he believes that everyone who saw (hehe) the first will want to see the second. He then clarifys this saying that he is only talking about at least a "boat load" of people whom he knows feel this way. Don't be so quick to pass judgement.

Same here, but we can't forget, Emily Rose did have the PG-13, which matters a WHOLE LOT.

Like I said, I hope it does well too. Emily Rose pulled numbers surprisingly similar to Sin City, $30 million opening, around $75 million total. Sin City was an R. Rose, like I said was PG-13. But we all know R-Rated horror is a hard sell, especially a sequel. Anyway, I'm rambling... GO SAW II!

Sin City had a whole hell of a lot of names to sell itself with as well. Bruce Willis, Rodriguez, Tarantino, Frank Miller and so on and so forth. But I would be far from shocked if Saw II opened at $30. I also wouldn't be shocked if it opened at $15 million. The box office has been mightly weak lately. Take it easy CyclicNightmare. I wasn't bashing him or calling him names, or "passing judgment." I just remember hearing that argument before, with other movies.

Good point about the cast, however I think it matters a lot more when you are talking about non-horor films. Often horror does not need big names to bring in money. I'm sure the majority of Emily Rose's audience were not huge fans of Laura Linney and Tom WIlkenson. Also, I have heard that arguement as well, but this time, that's just not what he was saying.

You're right that horror flicks don't need a name cast to open it, and Emily Rose is a perfect example. However, I think it's different when we're talking about R-rated horror. What's the biggest opening for an R-rated horror movie? I'm Blair Witch and the TCM remake are up at the top.

Didn't Freddy Vs Jason open with about $36 million?

I guess Hannibal would be #1, assuming that people considered it horror.

20-25 million

CyclicNightmare
10-27-2005, 08:55 PM
Hannibal- $58 million, 3200+
Red Dragon- $36.5 million, 3300+
Freddy vs. Jason- $36.4 million, 3000+
Interview with the Vampire- $36.3 million, 2600+
Scream 3- $34.7 million, 3400+
Scream 2- $32.9 million, 2600+
Bram Stoker's Dracula- $30.5 million, 2400+
Sleepy Hollow- $30 million, 3000+
The Blair Witch Project- $29.2 million, 1100+

$30 million for Saw II doesn't seem too out of the question. The above are all Rated R "horror" films from the past 15 years.

30 mil is definitely out of the question.

Saw 2 does not have that power. I think that it will at least perform the same as its predecessor this weekend, but instead will be at #1.

CyclicNightmare
10-27-2005, 09:09 PM
You are probably right. The box office has just not been hot this year. In order to nab $30 million, it would need an average of over $10,000 per theatre. I'm optimistic, but I guess I also don't see that happening.

hm well open ur eyes it made 12.5 mil on friday!:D

HAHA I am so happy to be wrong. I wanted to predict $30 million but I thought my optimism and personal bias were getting in the way. I am so happy.

Bring back Wan for Saw 3 please!

That's a great turnout. It'll definitely make at least around or over 20 million.

I don't think anybody was expecting it to make that much, maybe 25 million at the most

Gotta love that Halloween crowd. Good call by its producers and the studio for cranking this one out in time for the "scary season." I haven't seen it yet, but did enjoy the first one. Will probably watch the sequel on Tuesday.
