Proudly taking the #1 spot over the weekend, critical fave PRIDE & PREJUDICE was the winner of the week, collecting a neat, but uneventful $1,470,981. The opening is the 34th best for the year, and the 24th for the month of October. Total wise, with last week's advanced screenings taken into account, it has managed $1,984,864 (US $22,822,260), continuing the rather impressive run Keira Knightley has managed down under. Slipping a soft 22% and maintaining hold at #2 was the other main 'chick flick' on offer, IN HER SHOES. Fuelling a further $1,269,516, the Cameron Diaz vehicle is sitting on $4,001,386 (US $46,008,528), marking it as the 44th Highest Grossing film of the year so far, and Diaz's 11th best, only slightly trailing The Sweetest Thing ($4.10m). Also losing minimal interest, THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN continues its strong performance, with a further $1,126,183 added to the bank. After 3 weeks, Steve Carell's quest to pop his cherry has fired up $6,193,941 (US $71,218,850). Diving INTO THE BLUE at #4, Paul Walker's 8 pack and Jessica Alba's perfectly proportioned everything else scored $989,261 (US $11,374,669). Crossing the 10m mark this week, WALLACE AND GROMIT have accumulated a tasty $10,125,679 (US $116,426,555) after 6 weeks in release, seemingly now coming good on its promise of being a hit after it's disappointing launch. Making less than a splash towards the end of the Top 10, DARK WATER trickled with $223,917 (US $2,574,630), far from matching the openings of fellow remade scarers The Ring ($1.37m), The Ring Two ($2.07m), and The Grudge ($1.88m). The Jennifer Connelly drama already has a February release set for the DVD, so it may of been better by-passing the cinemas, or perhaps keeping it in its original August release. It gets points for trying though, and at least it didn't do as poorly as the week's major miss THE MAN, which was absent from the Top 20 with $52,327 (US $601,663), clearly a candidate for straight to DVD as it was originally intended after its US performance. Relinquishing a spot in the Top 10 after a 5 week stay, THE DUKES OF HAZZARD spends its 6th in release at #12, bringing the healthy sum of $9,978,331 (US $114,732,326) along with it. Sitting with a lesser sum, but managing to overtake its predecessor, TRANSPORTER 2 dropped 54%, looking likely that its cinema run is close to an end sitting at #19 after 4 weeks. The Jason Statham actioner has collected $1,754,756 (US $20,176,444), eclipsing the $1.57m of the original.
THIS WEEK (October 27th): All hell breaks loose with The Rock; and courtroom chills with Laura Linney and Tom Wilkinson.
