Total Film, those wonderful peeps from across the pond who gave us the 100 best horror movies a few weeks ago, now are doing the 100 best films, period. Right now all that is online is the top 10, which are:

1. "GoodFellas" (Martin Scorsese, 1990)
2. "Vertigo" (Alfred Hitchcock, 1958)
3. "Jaws" (Steven Spielberg, 1975)
4. "Fight Club" (David Fincher, 1999)
5. "The Godfather, Part II" (Francis Ford Coppola, 1974)
6. "Citizen Kane" (Orson Welles, 1941)
7. "Tokyo Story" (Yasujiro Ozu, 1953)
8. "The Empire Strikes Back" (Irvin Kershner, 1980)
9. "The Lord of the Rings" (Peter Jackson, 2001-2003)
10. "His Girl Friday" (Howard Hawks, 1940)

I have major issues with the LOTR being that high, as well as Vertigo, Jaws and Fight Club. Fight Club is the best of those three, but I don't think it's an all-time top 10. Goodfellas is a decent choice, although it wouldn't be in my top 20. Of course, Total Film is not all that well respected and won't be gaining anything by listing three post-1990 films on their list, but it is interesting to discuss anyway. What do you all think?

The link also has Roger Ebert's Top 10 of All Time, in alphabetical order:

"Aguirre, Wrath of God" (Herzog)
"Apocalypse Now" (Coppola)
"Citizen Kane" (Welles)
"Dekalog" (Kieslowski)
"La dolce vita" (Fellini)
"The General" (Keaton)
"Raging Bull" (Scorsese)
"2001: A Space Odyssey" (Kubrick)
"Tokyo Story" (Ozu)
"Vertigo" (Hitchcock)

I still don't like Vertigo, Apocalypse Now, or 2001 being that high, but it is a great list all in all. Again, thoughts??

Interesting, I don't much put stock into top ten lists of movies. It's all subjective. If you go purely on technical merits then you get some good, but somewhat broing movies....

I do like lists compiled of multi movie goers views. Those IMHO are more reflective then some site trying to make a splash, or one person trying to show how much they know about movies.

I can buy 2001, it's a good movie and well done, especially for it's time.

Fight club is a good movie, but I wouldn't put in a top ten all time list, same thing with Good Fellas or Jaws.

Good movies? Yes. But not Top Ten.

LOTR as a whole deserves a place on any top ten list IMHO.

i guess thats a pretty solid list, no complaints

i have quite a few complaints...i would damn sure hope that total film is not all that well respected when i see a top 10 list like this compiled...

the only picks i agree with are the godfather part 2 (where's part 1 by the way?) and citizen kane...
i can believe tokyo story, vertigo (although not my hitchcock choice), empire (i prefer the original), and even his girl friday...not ones that i'd put on there, but i can see why someone else would...
jaws is an all around great movie, it broke boundaries and introduced steven speilberg...but mainly, it's a popcorn flick...top 50, yes...not the top 10...
goodfellas and fight club are two favorites of mine, but it is simply too early to place them this high on the list...personally, i'd put the in the top 50, and that's being generous...they haven't stood the test of time yet, which does count for something...
and as for lotr?!? what the fuck? and why are they compiled as one movie? they could do the same for many trilogies (star wars, the godfather)...these don't even belong in the top 100 let alone the top 10...also the same goes that they haven't stood the test of time yet...

as for ebert's picks...i've always respected the man's reviews, and i respect his picks...personally, the only one i agree with is kane, but the others could arguably be in there...the point is, it's a matter of opinion when it comes to this subject, but many other factors must be taken into account...you would think with a name like "total film" their top 10 list would be a little more thought over...but like i said, it's all a matter of opinion anyways...who am i to say they got it wrong...just my two cents

Any list like this is inherently flawed. It's automatically 'wrong' because the person reading it didn't write it. Personally, though I'd not agree with it, I think the Total Film list is refreshing it brings in films that aren't often listed in top 10's, His Girl Friday being a particularly surprising and excellent inclusion.

exactly right, which is why i dont bitch about these types of lists, while there are some great films on that list, most of them wont be anywhere near my top 10

I basically agree with the sentiments that the list is just some schmuck's (or some assembly of schmucks') opinion.

Anyway, here is where this schmuck agrees with top 10 picks:

Total Film -

*"GoodFellas" (Martin Scorsese, 1990)

one for ten there, but I haven't seen TOKYO STORY.

Roger Ebert's -

*"2001: A Space Odyssey" (Kubrick)

one for ten again, but I haven't seen DEKALOG

So, I 10% agree with both lists.

Yeah, I have to agree that the list is definately one of the more interesting ones I haven't seen. It's great for me to see BACK TO THE FUTURE getting recognized as a top film.

I haven't seen THREE KINGS yet, but I've heard nothing but good things about it.

I'm a bit thrown back by seeing CRASH at number 21. Has that even come out on video yet?

Also - I just noticed that they are counting LOTR as one movie (2001 - 2003) which I think makes it a more solid pick than just taking one or the other.

There are def. cool films on the list.

#21 definitely has to be Cronenberg's Crash.

I'll rant.

'Vertigo'. Are these poeple who made the list morons! I wouldn't even rate Vertigo amongst Hitchcocks mediocre films. It was just bad. Its like 'North By Northwest'. Boring! Pick a good one like the origanal 'The Man Who Knew Too Much' or 'Psycho'.

Why isn't Casablanca in the top ten. Is there someone who is actually going to say 'My Girl Friday' is better than 'Casablanca'.

Of the entie list, the only movie that might be worthy of such an honour is 'Citizen Kane', Maybe.

Geezus, is it just me or is Goodfella's one of THE MOST over-rated movies ever?

It's good... It's very good... But it's not great, not in my mind anyway...

Believe me it isn't just you. A very good movie, but one that gets old fast.
"Get Carter?!" The Stallone movie?! What the fuck?! Tell me the Stallone film was a remake of a far superior movie.

Christ almighty, YES!!!

Released in 1971 (the same year Straw Dogs and A Clockwork Orange hit the screens, which must make 71 the annus mirabilis for violent films set in Britain), Get Carter opens with gangsters leering over pornographic slides and ends on a filthy, slag-stained beach in Newcastle. It's a low-down and dirty movie from beginning to end, and possibly the grittiest and best film of its kind to come out of Britain. - AMAZON

I think it boils down to that old "influential vs. good" debate. Wihile I too agree that Vertigo isn't my favorite Hitchcock film, I can't deny its impact and popularity. It's also a text book film example of technique.

Dems people loves dem sum Vertigo.

It's called subjectivity last time I checked. Yeah so it's my favourite movie...a lot of other people like it too, so for it to be overrated then some of those people are either lying or just plain wrong. Now I am guilty of using the term overrated, look at my reviews for Crash...I just don't understand the love but hey good for so many people finding something I didn't. As for Goodfellas, hey that's cool that you don't dig it and all, but I ain't lying about my love for it nor am I wrong...it's all subjective.

I just think Citizen Kane is way too overrated because it was probably the first good movie. But lets move on. Yeah, its alright, still bores me to tears though. Nothing pisses me off more than first year film students droning on and on about Orson Wells' writing and Gregg Toland's cinemtography, basically spewing out sentence after sentence from their books they bought for their classes. Shut up about this movie!

And as for 2001, so help me God I want to pull my eyeballs out after 15 minutes of this movie. Another overrated film that is good, but so terribly boring.

Who says that in order for a film to be great and revered through time, that it has to bore the shit out of the audience?
