I was disappointed that Miers didn't follow this through cause I wanted to hear if she handled herself well. Oh well. Now we'll see who the next one is. I think it probably has to be a woman or a minority cause this is the O'Connor replacement.

Indeed. The only thing i kept hearing over and over was how nice of a woman she is. Is she a qualified person? yes. Is she qualified enough to reside on the highest court in the country? No.

What made her unqulified? It sounded like she had attained a high elevation in her career. I'm not sure if she was qualified or not but I would have liked to hear her speak.

She did speak. It went something like this -

"Yeah, there's probably someone better qualified for this job. We should find someone besides me."

Why the <> would you want a Supreme Court Justice who doesn't even stand up for her own qualifications?

She's never even served as a judge or argued in front of the supreme court.

I mean, just a while aho you were speaking about judges making bad decisions.

She had experience except in anything relating to the law. She's never written one piece of legal literature for any sort of journal, addressed any kind of court, etc.

Consider that Sandra Day O'Connor, a very respectable judge, based her decisons strictly on the law. She went to law school and worked as a lawyer and as a judge (pre-supreme court) and amassed a great deal of knowlege and experience working in the system, so that when she ascended to the highest court in the land she had a vast well of information to pull from. She garnered the reputation that she did because she always went by the reference of the law. She wasn't what many would consider an activist judge.

Now considering all that, would you really want someone like Miers, whose never even written a legal brief, to fill THAT position?

Along with it being a case of rather obvious Bush cronyism in action the woman had never even served as a judge. And her personal record is almost nonexistent with the Bush Administration blocking Conress' repeated requests for the information.

This is a nonpartisan issue by the way. Take the GOP blinders off and do some research on this woman's qualifications and you'll see what I mean.

Maybe this answers your question:

I think that was all Bush thought he needed to fill O'Conner's shoes.

BUSH: Dang, gotta 'place O'Conner? Hey, idn't der... Um. Oh yeah - Hey, don't I - Oh heck whatshername? Hey Laura, who's that chick judge we had over for dinner last Christmas?"

Uhhhh, plenty of people are appointed to the supreme court with no judicial experience. Remember William Rehnquist. Her never being a judge is not an issue.

Okay, Myers was qualified. Guess we were both wrong then, huh?

But she has a doctorate in law right? It's not like she has no idea of the law. I'm not sure what being a judge has to do with being able to decide a Constitutional question. She has as much education as any other judge ( a law degree) so what she lacked was a certain kind of experience. I think that anyone who understands the Constitution can make a pretty good judgement about whether something is Constitutional or not. After all the Supreme Court is made up of the four people who recently ruled on that emminent domain case that allows the cities and towns to take away a private person's property in the name of big business. I think any idiot could hold his or her own with these people.

lol

One of the new nominees being talked about is a Judge from NJ.

I'm biased.
