It won bragging rights as the weeks top movie destination, but video-game turned cinema outing DOOM was barely registered with $1,461,886 (US $16,808,981), playing closely in line with its performance in the US. It comes in just behind last week's #1 PRIDE & PREJUDICE ($1.47m) as the 25th best opening for October, and though a 70+% drop is unlikely here as it was in the states, things aren't looking any brighter for this adaptation. The aforementioned Keira Knightley period piece managed a decent second week, only slipping 24%, and has totalled $3,730,667 (US $42,895,761) in its 2 weeks in release. A fine release for the Halloween season, but overlooked for The Rock's guns, and the fact that Halloween barely registers here, THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE settled in at #3 with $939,564 (US $10,803,245), far from matching its performance in the US. The remaining top 5 players also saw soft declines, seeing them both sit on healthy totals so far. IN HER SHOES only dipped 27%, and after 3 weeks in rotation has scored $5,422,037 (US $62,343,383), marking it as the 37th Highest Grossing film of the year, and the 9th Highest for Diaz, whilst THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN dropped off 32% in its 4th week of release, placing it at #26 on the 2005 list with $7,316,788 (US $84,129,511). Before opening nationally this week, Aussie chiller WOLF CREEK tested the waters with a round of advance screenings, earning it $347,525 (US $3,995,893). With the word high on the film, a swag of praising reviews, and 2005 being a rather storng year for local made productions in general, things are looking good for the film, despite its R rating, which will limit the audience range. On the topic of well received Aussie films, THE PROPOSITION with Guy Pearce, and LITTLE FISH with Cate Blanchett also continue to perform solidly. The former dipped 22% this week, and has rounded up $1,496,244 (US $17,204,034), whilst the latter, only off a miniscule 6% in its 8th week of release, has accumulated $3,078,091 (US $35,392,345). The 14th film this year to cross the almighty $10m mark became THE DUKES OF HAZZARD this week, as its weekend intake of $79,468, increased the Seann William Scott comedy to $10,096,592 (US $116,092,109). A film that only took 2 weeks to cross that mark, and in 9 weeks has more than doubled it, is CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY which rounds out the Top 20 this week. The Johnny Depp kiddie flick will bow out with a potent $24,373,394 (US $280,248,891), putting it as the 3rd Highest Grossing film of the year and the 36th of All-Time, ahead of such films as Spider-Man 2 ($24.2m), Saving Private Ryan ($24.1m) and Troy ($23.4m).
THIS WEEK (November 3rd): Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst get the Cameron Crowe treatment; Aussies prove their capable at giving a solid scare; and the lands of the world and the dead combine for Ewan, Naomi and Ryan.
