I don't know about the rest of you, but one type of horror that tends to peak my interest are those that are based (or many times very loosely based) on true stories. The fact that these stories fall into the category of horror tells you they're very unusual, and makes them that much more interesting; even though they are often times GREATLY exaggerated to make them horror. I also find that some of these real horror stories creep me out more than the typical fictitious horror films.
So what are your thoughts on horror that is based on true stories?
Just for the heck of it, here's the list of horror films based on true stories:
Amityville Horror (1979,2005 - hoax)
Amityville Horror II (the real murders that started the whol thing)
The Exorcist
The Exorcism of Emily Rose
The Blair Witch Project (loosely inspired by the Bell Witch)
Mothman Prophecies
White Noise (based on real phenomena, some of which is presented in the film)
*Texas Chainsaw Massacre
*Psycho
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
Wolf Creek
*both these films are loosely inspired by serial killer Ed Gein.
Did I miss any?

Wes Craven said he got his inspiration for A Nightmare On Elm Street from reading about some young cambodians dying in their sleep from fright.

On the commentary for NOES, he goes into much more detail. They were three separate events over the course of about a year and a half. Each of them were terrified to go to sleep. When they did, they woke up screaming then died. And in the third case, the kid didn't go to sleep for seven days straight. They found coffee makers and coffee jugs under his bed that he'd been hiding so he could stay awake.
Then of course the look of Freddy is based on a tramp Craven used to see, and the name Fred Krueger was a bully when he was at school.

Buffalo Bill (the killer from Silence of the Lambs) is also loosely based on Ed Gein.

I copied offline for someone, I just saved it on here because my time was running down on this library comp and I had to put it somewhere quick so when I got back I could paste it to them.
