Ive actually commented on this at a number of different posts but I thought I would go ahead and post this in a rant cause its really quite annoying. I think ever since Ive started working at studio its annoyed me more and that is specifically the idea of people ranitng about remakes. Ill be the first to a dmit there is defintely a problem going as there are far too many remakes being made but what is never mentioned that baffles me is why do people who complain about the remakes actually pay to see them. I mean doesnt anybody relaize that is one makes a remake a success it will only continue to be a trend. Look at The Fog. As much as people compalined about that its still was number one at the box office. Sure it wasnt a huge hit but then again it was a cheap.
Whats really annoying is that while people whine about remakes they make money while non-remakes like Cinderlla Man, Serenity, North Shore, the upcoming Zathura and Pride And Prejuidice and a number of indpendent films go unnoticed and theyre all great movies.
I guess what Im trying to say is yes theres a problem in Hollywood but please tales some responsibility. If you dont like remakes stop giving your money to them. It really pisses me off.

I don't have a big problem with remakes, I have enjoyed quite a few (TCM, Dawn Of The Dead, House Of Wax) but few have been awful (PSYCHO, The Fog, which I didn't pay to see btw, I don't pay for PG-13 movies).

Don't take this too seriously, but I think it's ironic that remake threads keep getting remade.

I will only see a remake if I think that the original movie can be improved upon (Amityville Horror, War of the Worlds), and if the movie looks good enough that it will stand on its own based on trailers and whatnot (Dawn of the Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre). If it's a remake I won't want to see I'll usually wait until it's on TV or download it if I am that desperate to see it.

Well put, Chinton.
Unfortunately, people are fickle.
Hollywood would pitch movies where the studio execs mom's would give hummers on Rodeo Drive if it would boost the box office gross.
As long as millions of people tune in to watch crappy reality shows, pap type dramas, and "hip" by executive's standards programming, these remakes will continue to be made.

And people wanna know why I download movies...
J/K, man. You're right on, though. I do complain about remakes, but I don't add fuel to the fire by paying to see them. If I have even a small sneaking suspicion that they are going to bite the big one, then I won't even bother. Fuck The Fog, by the way. I just thought I'd say that. Any movie that has WB-heartthrob Tom Welling as the poster boy isn't enticing me into that theater.

Personally, I blame the press.
I had new clue the upcoming FUN WITH DICK AND JANE was a remake until reading so in EW.
That, I think, is the case with most remakes. People aren't like, "Ah man, I already saw that movie! Why are they remaking them?'
No, they are usually like, "Gawd! There goes an American studio remaking another Japanese horror movie. Jeez..."
But most of the time, i've found, the people complaining have never even seen the original. They are sort of just complaining because they feel entitled to, or maybe it just feels right.
These revamping of old TV shows -- that's a different beast all together. You have the FUGITIVE camp, where they make the movies straight up, then you have the BRADY BUNCH camp where they make them ironic and self-aware. Sometimes those work, sometimes not.
What's even less original than Hollywood is complaining about its lack of originality.

So what makes people go to a movie? Generally, it is awareness - or now, in Hollywood parlance, "pre-awareness." Since studios cannot spend enough on advertising to buy awareness (there is so much advertising noise in the marketplace these days), there is a tendency to make movies with familiar titles, characters and stories: "The Dukes of Hazzard," "Spider-Man," "War of the Worlds," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." In the past decade, most box-office revenue has come from pre-aware titles, which includes sequels ("X-Men 3," set for a May 2006 release) and remakes ("King Kong," Dec. 14).
Well, other than laziness or churlishness, which seems to be the contention of the original poster, here is another reason why studioes do remakes..... :)

I say if you've gotta do a remake, take old, really bad movies and make them better. By the way, this does not include Yours, Mine & Ours (see the Lucille Ball version!). That one is just gonna suck the big one. So is In the Mix. It's painfully obvious that this is just a copy of Hustle & Flow and Get Rich or Die Tryin'.
