Smoothly flying into the #1 spot over the weekend was Jodie Foster's air-tight thriller FLIGHTPLAN which launched with a respectable $2,172,116 (US $24,975,311), marking it as the 19th Highest Opener this year, and the second best for Foster, trailing the $2.61m opening of 2002's Panic Room, which went on to a stellar $10.58m finish, something that may or may not be in the cards for her latest thriller. Still maintaining solid interest was the Aussie chiller WOLF CREEK which only slipped a soft 30% in its second week. So far the Nathan Phillips chiller has earnt a fine $3,038,338 (US $34,935,260), now the 60th Highest Grossing film of the year. Despite only a 65 screen count, the quirky crime comedy KISS KISS, BANG BANG managed to slip into the Top 5, making good on its reviews and word of mouth following it's advance screenings. With a debut of $462,590, the Robert Downey Jr/Val Kilmer flick has managed $539,716 (US $6,205,734) all up. Still going strong, and continuing it's low drops weeky by week, IN HER SHOES hangs on strong 5 weeks into it's release. With only a 37% drop this week, the Cameron Diaz/Toni Collette dramedy sits with a potent $7,055,992 (US $81,130,840), signifying it as the 27th Highest Grossing film of the year. Little publicity lead the FOUR BROTHERS to an underwhelming debut at #7 with $390,984 (US $4,495,591). After a 5 week play in the Top 10, Steve Carell had to give up his spot and settle for #11 for his 6th week in release. THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN has little to complain about though with a total so far of $8,478,571 (US $97,487,864), trailing it just outside the Top 20 Highest Grossing films of the year at #21. Suffering a major blow only after 2 weeks in release, troubled thriller STAY dipped a staggering 79%, plunging from #9 to #17. The better-luck-on-DVD flick has only a small $321,653 (US $3,698,413) to its name. Outside the Top 20 two docos made their appearance. The David LaChappelle directed RIZE and the Brian Grazer produced INSIDE DEEP THROAT. Respectively they managed $33,779 (US $388,395) and $32,272 (US $371,068).
THIS WEEK (November 17th): Therapy's in session for Uma and Meryl; Jigsaw's sadistic games continue; Words do wonders for Richard Gere; and Johnny Depp finds the love of his afterlife.
