Robert De Niro, who vowed never to play a mobster again, is to don his Borsalino hat one more time.

The actor, who won an Oscar for his role as the young Don Vito Corleone in 1974's The Godfather II is to play a retired mafia hit man who is pulled back into business after an assassination attempt.

De Niro is legendary for his gangster parts in The Godfather trilogy and Goodfellas and even voiced the cartoon mob shark, Don Lino, in the animated children's film Shark Tale, but his recent outings have seen him in more diverse genres such as the comedy Meet the Fockers and horror Hide and Seek.

De Niro will also coproduce the thriller, entitled The Winter of Frankie Machine, based on a yet-to-be-published novel by author and screenwriter Don Winslow.

"[De Niro] did say that [he wouldn't play a Mafia character]," the actor's producing partner, Jane Rosenthal told the trade publication Variety. "But along came Don Winslow, who created a perfect character. The lesson here is 'never say never'."

No screenwriter has yet been hired to write the adaptation. The book is expected to be published next year.

I'm a huge De Niro fan. I really love his roles in the Mafia movies so I am looking forward to this film.

Fuckin finally. It's where he belongs. De Niro is a great actor, but he shouldn't do a film where he doesn't fire a weapon. C'mon.

Cool. But it may be awhile before the actual filming begins. He's got other film projects lined up after THE GOOD SHEPHERD. He'll star opposite Jodie Foster in SUGARLAND. He'll play movie producer Art Linson in WHAT JUST HAPPENED. And it was also previously announced that he'll play the President's husband in FIRST MAN. Meryl Streep plays the President. I don't think he'll be carrying a gun in any of those, but they sound just as promising.

Sounds more promising than the shitty films he's been appearing in for the last five years.

Not really. If your implying that he doesnt need to tote a weapon around in order to showcase his acting ability, well...watch H.E.A.T. Probably his BEST performance ever, and he was a straight-up badass. Best of both worlds. Violence junkies get their fix, and character film buffs get theirs as well. Everyone wins. This, is why Michael Mann should become President. He's just the master of balance...can't we all just get along?:D

My dad thinks goodfellas is a subject of horrible violence that i should not see till I'm... Well he might of meant at all. But good news is i can see the godfather trilogy and i will. Can't wait for that and cant wait for this.

Maybe will see a trailer at munich since their from the same studio. Maybe if were lucky, when munich comes out will get trailers for flight 93 and miami vice who are both from the same studio. I'm also interested to see how FATF3 turns out. And then there the children of men. But five trailers premiering at one movie? We will have to dream, my friend... we will have to dream...

That can't be right. I wouldn't trust the IMDB. According to a recent Matt Damon interview, they're shooting till Feb. 2006. Regarding trailers popping up any time soon, I wouldn't count on it. It's not scheduled for release until Dec. 22, 2006. It's not the kind of movie where you'll see teasers a year ahead of time.

Why did it take him so long? Playing a mobster is what he's best at.
