Hey you guys I cant find a thread on this so I thought I would post this.

Why is this movie getting praise. It has a lot of interesting and surprisngly deep themes involving the complexities of religion sadly the movie never really comes together. Too bad becuase I thought it was going together. The biggest problem if I had to pick one is the Juliette Binoche character whose going crazy for some reason. I think its becuase her parents died when she was young or something but it never really makes it clear. The whole storyline got really annoying. There is also some good acting in this film but in the end its basically a swirl of good ideas that never really congeals into anything powerful.

5/10

I made a promise to myself never to see this based on the CORNY AS HELL trailer, but I'll give it a shot if it at least attempts something thoughtful. Better to try and fail than remain conventionally insipid.

Scratch my above statement; this IS insipid, even though it thinks it isn't. The family drama, the search for God in every little letter, Jewish mysticism...none of it gels very well. The acting is uniformly stiff (typical for Gere), even though Juliette Binoche tries her darndest to make us sympathize with a bizarrely written character -- oh, I guess she was missing a "piece," which ties in with the whole universe/talking to God angle, but it doesn't make any sense to me.
