SPOILERS FOR 'THE SKELETON KEY'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My friends and I rented 'The Skeleton Key' last night, after having missed it in theaters (thankfully, now) and I was so let down. TV Spots for the movie always flashed a quote that said "The most amazing twist since The Sixth Sense". What a crock. How was that even a twist in this movie?
For anyone who has seen it, you know the movie is based on Voodoo and human sacrifices. Well once it was revealed that Father Justify and his wife were into Voodoo and that they were the "haunters" of the house, having lived there since the night of their murder by switching bodies with younger people, I knew that Kate Hudson would get "sacrificed" by them. And sure enough, it happened. Even my friends, who have such bad taste in movies that they think 'The Pacifier' is one of the funniest movies of all times, knew it would happen.
It's not a twist when it's that obvious. A twist is something unexpected, like, as referenced in the quote shown on TV, 'The Sixth Sense'. I dont think anyone in the world, who didnt know somehow beforehand, knew Bruce Willis was a fucking ghost. THAT was a twist. When I first saw that movie, and that was revealed, it blew my fucking mind. Revealing in a movie that "spirits" live on in a house and avenge their death continuously throughout time by switching bodies with people younger than them, and then playing it out to perfection, is not a twist. That is simply just carrying out the obvious plot details.
There should be a rule that if you are releasing a movie, you can only advertise a twist if you have one. Otherwise just tell the truth: "this movie pretty much sucks, theres nothing special about it, dont waste your time". But of course, if they did that, then no one would ever go see it so they feel the need to lie and trick you and take your money.
I was robbed goddamn it.

I hate ads that herald the arrival of yet another post-Shyamalan twist. Why? Because now I know there's a fucking twist, and I'll spend the entire movie looking for it, usually solving it halfway through.
I don't need Peter Travers to tell me The Others has a "wicked twist of an ending," 'cause I won't be able to concentrate on more important things like (a) story, (b) characters I can relate to and (c) other stylistic directorial flourishes since I am now looking for something to "knock my socks off."

I thought it was a pretty cool twist myself, but it's definately not the best twist since The Sixth Sense. That award goes to Identity.

Yeah, I had heard that Skeleton Key had a pretty lame ending.
Also, I'm pretty sure if I ever see another movie where the twist is that "It was all in their head" or a split personality, I will fuckin' flip shit.

In the commercials for the DVD (without giving anything away), they tell you what the f**king twist is! Those who have seen it know what I'm talking about!
Love Kate Hudson, but this movie and its "twist"?
Back to the drawing board.

Those are the worst... and there's so many of them. With the Skeleton Key, I didn't think it was that great. I didn't predict the ending, but maybe that's because I was trying too hard to figure it out. I knew there was some sort of twist coming because of those annoying ads. It was OK, but nothing great. I'm just glad it didn't turn out to be the split personality thing... which is sadly what I assume mosts movie's twists are that claim to have a twist (and usually it is).

Kate Hudson in her underwear is the only reason to see this movie.

I actually thought it was a pretty good movie. Loved that it had a bleak ending and nice atmosphere rather than jump scares. I wish people would stop saying that theres going to be a twist. Its not really hard to spot a twist once youve been told there is one

Any movie that advertises a twist, is going to be a piece of shite. That's pretty much the rule of thumb.

I'm going to bring up a ridiculous twist from a movie I saw recently and yes there indeed will be
SPOILERS!!!!!
High Tension...oh boy, how do I express my complete and utter disdain about this twist folks? We are led into the chase of the girl trying to save her friend from the maniac who killed the friends family. She calls the cops and then steals a car and chases after the guy. Oh and then it's revealed a little bit later that there is no maniac and that she herself is the killer and that she's just crazy. What? Excuse me? Did I see this fucking thing right? It negates everything and just makes me laugh at the screen...how could they release this? How can the filmmakers look people in the face and say they are proud of this twist? It doesn't make any God damned sense at all! Oh you can say that we saw her in the asylum early on and say that whenever she was fighting the guy it was her fighting over control of her body from her split personality. You know what I call it? LAZY FUCKING FILMMAKING! It's bad writing, and an easy exit. I'd rather it be straightforward and make sense than veer off to left field for no reason. Also, it makes every scene with the maniac useless for the most part, especially the severed head fellatio scene...IT DIDN'T HAPPEN SO WHY SHOW IT YOU FUCK?!?! What a pile of shit.

I just watched The Skeleton Key, thought it was all right but I guessed the twists and tuens long before they happened.
Oh and I got The Sixth Senses twist after the opening scene. I don't get the big fuss over The Sixth Senses twist at all. I just found it so easy to spot. Also The Secret Windows twist was dead easy to guess.
While The Skeleton Key was predictable I was happy it wasn't to same type of twists that have been rehashed a lot lately.

SPOILERS FOR HIGH TENSION
I actully like that twist, even if it's not 100% original, although you have to remember it came out in france some 3 years ago. I think the answer lies in the fact that it's her telling this story, the movie you see is her versions of evens, hence in the opening scene we see her being interviewed. Her story just gets a little muddled up in the end. Or maybe it's ment to be her fighting off her psycho half. She sees herself as the hero trying to save the person she loves.

Bah, be that as it may I think it was terribly executed and I just don't like those twists at all...they've become cliche. The gore was great, I just wish that twists would stop being the flavour of the damned week and focus more on good storytelling. For me, High Tension was one of the worst movies I have seen in a long time...mostly because of the twist.
I haven't seen Skeleton Key yet so I haven't read the spoilers, Peter Sarsgaard is in it, so I'll check it out eventually.

I was so busy waiting for this movie to get good that the 'twist' snuck up on me. Alas, all it did was piss me off because that meant the movie was over without ever getting good. this one disappointed me more than The Village.

Yes, I'm very much looking forward to the day that writers and filmmakers realise that their twists suck, and that it is no longer a selling point. I wonder if M Night's next movie will try to avoid the "It's got a great twist!" marketing, especially after the terrible rep The Village got.

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I saw the skeleton key in theaters. Didnt guess the twist of the vodoo people taking over younger people's bodies, but the twist about Peter Sarsgard's character I saw coming. Actually it was in the previews. They show him leaning over Kate Hudson and saying, "are you ok child?" or something like that, so I saw that coming. Overall, the twist was pretty good. I didnt really like the twist, but it was def better that recent "twists" such as hide and seek. That was the easiest twist to figure out I think I've ever seen.

***SPOILERS!!!!*****
The thing that pissed me off about Sarsgaard's "twist" is that the screenwriter underestimated his audience. Writers don't seem to realize that most people who go to movies have seen lots of flicks just like this one before and can recognize a huge plot anamoly. In the begining, Sargaard's character is there for one reason, to introduce Kate Hudson's character into the house, to Gena Rowlands, and into the main part of the story. After that he really has nothing to do so he should get the hell out of the movie, but instead he just hangs around.
Sure, there's a good reason for the character to be there, he's a lawyer, he's handling the legal aspects of the John Hurt's impending death, but do we, the audience, give a crap about his last will and testament, is it important to the resolution of the plot? No, so why is he there? Of course, he fills the role of confidant and ally to Hudson to some degree, but we already have a character who does that, Joy Bryant. There's some mild hint that he may be there as a love interest, but this goes nowhere and would be completely extraneous, so again, that's a deadend. The audience is forced to ask themselves, why does this guy keep showing up in the movie when it seems like he's not doing anything? From there it's a simple jump to deciding something is up and an even simpler one to deciding what "something" is. Ehren Kruger should have done a better job of embedding the character of Luke into the story so that it was less obvious that he was there to be a wild card.

I didn't see the twist coming. I didn't even know there was going to be one. I thought it was okay, better than the other shit coming out these days. I don't know how Birdpoop can say this movie was more disappointing than the Village (world's worst "twist" ever). Oh and Jackson, I happened to know that Bruce Willis was ghost halfway through the Sixth Sense (without any prior knowledge).

I think a big problem comes when a company advertises a twist. By the time The Sixth Sense came out in the UK everyone was going on about a big twist ending. I wasn't into the internet when that came out so I was never online but magazines and all that kept going on that the ending will blow you away. So from the very start I was trying to figure it out and got it quite easily.
Now with Fight Club, Scream, High Tension and Saw to name a few I had no clue there was a twist ending coming so I was able to enjoy the movie and get gobsmacked when the twists came along.
