You know the scene where they show Karkaroff entering the great hall looking all suspicious? What was that about? This is one of my few pet peeves with the movie.

I know they're trying to set him up at a red herring as to who put Harry's name in the goblet, but we all know he didn't so what was he doing in there without Krum or any of this students?

One of my theories was the it was Barty Crouch Jr. disguised via Polyjuice Potion as Karkaroff so if anyone caught him in the act he wouldn't be caught as Moody, but I think this is a little far fetched because they give no other clues that that could have been Crouch Jr.

Karkaroff was/is a follower of Voldemort, a Death-eater.

Who knows. Its a good question.

Crouch and Karakoff were both death eaters. Maybe that could have been a piece of the puzzle. It is somewhat of an unnecessary detail. But if that scene were not included, the implication that Karakoff may be a red herring would have been far too subtle.

Well I know that. ;) That wasn't what I was asking...

It's just a red herring, simple as that.

Yeah. This is a movie a lot of young kids go see. If the first time he appears, you make one of your suspects look evil and suspicious, then that gets the kids to suspect them, without them wondering "hey, hey, what's his motvation for that look? I don't get it."
