Australian movie rating labels = FUGLY!

I don't know how many Australians there are on this site, mabye I'll find out because I know they will agree with me on this.

Recently the OFLC (Office of Film and Literature Classification - basically the Australian MPAA, but only for ratings) changed the style of ratings labels on movies.

Firstly a couple of things for non-Australians; ratings in Australia are different to the US and they are legally enforced. Ratings are also displayed on the front of every movie, posters, DVD cases and everything.

Previously the label could be any colour and didn't have a background. The rating symbol was just a letter with a shape around it. Americans probably think that this would be bad enough, seeing as how the ratings dont need to be visible on the front of your DVD's. This situation was fine though as it didn't look too bad and didn't detract from the movie's artwork.

But now the label has changed to this god-awful sticker looking type thing:

AARRGGHH!! It sticks out REALLY BADLY! It looks like a sticker but it DOES NOT COME OFF! It's printed on the bloody cover! These rating labels are on all new DVD's and movie posters and they look terrible.

That's all I've got to say. I hate them and there is nothing I can do about it. :(

I've been too lazy to complain about it here on joblo but fuk yeh they are more uglier then alot of shit you see today. I mean mainly because it ruins any dvd or poster or cover for whatever...expeciially if you go look at batman begins and pulp fiction 2-discer and what not...THEY SUCK!!!

As much as they do look clunky, we buy DVD's not for what the rating symbol looks like but the movie itself... the last time I checked anyway.

Well yes, I do buy movies for the movies themselves. That's why I still buy DVD's despite the ugly labels. I just don't like them and preferred the old style. I'm just complaining about them because I don't like them. This is a rant after all. ;)

As a fellow aussie I whole heartedly agree...this has actually forced me to only buy imported DVds now. So the aussie market loses about $15000 bucks a year from me alone because of this.

Worst thing, the cause of the whole thing is retarded parents who dont take responsibility for their children and their actions.

So many parents let their kids get HAPPY TREE FRIENDS and didnt read the rating (which was clearly visible and marked on the front) that rather than open there eyes they kicked up such a stink that the OFLC board was forced to implememnt this new travesty.

In this era of gritty anime, south park and any number of adult animated TV how can parents not look at the rating. My parents had no problem 30 years ago checking the rating of films before letting me see them. Now for some reason their blind fuck heads. Blind ass fucks who insist on defacing cover art and destroying the aussie DVDmarket, ridiculous.

Ive written a email to the OFLC explaining the fact that the DVD market is losing vast amounts of cash from this and more and more people will start buying the US reeases. I suggest we all do the same

Is that true, Deckard? The change to the crappy new labels was because of Happy Tree Friends? You learn something new every day. I'm also from Australia and hate the new labels. I'm also puzzled why they changed from the "low, medium, high" gradings to "mild, moderate, strong" system, though that doesn't bother me as much as the labels themselves.

Nah, the rating system is still the same. The LOTD thing just means that the extra stuff wasn't enough to push it over into a higher rating.

I had to wake up my significant other (who was born and rasied in Australia, but moved to the USA in 2001, where within two months met yours truly) to show her this. And we agree with Pazu ...

The Mystic River cover is ok. Not good, but ok.
However, the War of the Worlds cover on the other hand, is absolutely fucking dreadful.
