Holy crap. I just watched the trailers for the movie Zinda, the Bollywood remake of Oldboy, and I can't beleive how disgusted I feel. Oldboy is one of the best movies i've seen in a long time and for someone to remake it period (even worse after only 3 years of release) really pisses me off. They even copy individual shots and even the dude's hairstlye! I had heard rumors that Hollywood was gonna remake it which made me kinda angry, but to know that they already have remade it really angers me.

Who do they think they are? I can't imagine any other movie from recent years that I would be more angry about for a remake.

Seriously...You're getting upset about a BOLLYWOOD remake of this film? Do you know what the Bollywood film industry is like? Bollywood remaking this movie is the equivalent of Menudo doing a cover of a Pink Floyd song. It's going to be a.) hysterical and b.) horrible.

are you serious? CLIVE OWEN!?!?

He hardly fits that part at all.

Plus, if you have seen the trailer for Zinda you would see that this is an actual attempt at a dramatic movie and not the Bollywood you would think

From what I've seen, this is NOT a musical.

This does look horrible. Really, though, is this any worse than Scorsese remaking INFERNAL AFFAIRS? Obviously he's a little more respected (at least in these parts) than the Bollywood industry, but it's no different - he's stealing a concept because he knows he can sell it to people who don't want to watch a foreign film. I'm sure Scorsese's film will be good (it's tough to go wrong with that plot), but it's a rip off no better than this ZINDA crap.

How dare a country on the other side of the world remake a movie so that it is relevant to their own culture.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go watch The Magnificent Seven, because nothing is more American and original than cowboys!

Did The Magnificent Seven say that they were remaking from Kurosawa's film?

Because Zinda isn't saying that they're remaking Oldboy

I don't know what difference it makes, because the ranter is solely complaining about an Indian remake. Besides - not very many remakes are forthcoming about being remakes anyway, so I've never seen that issue being raised here.

But I wasn't alive in 1960, so we have to imagine, and can you seriously imagine an American trailer for a 1960s cowboy movie going, "Yul Brenner, Charles Bronson, and Steve McQueen in a remake of Akira Kurosawa's Shichi-nin No Samurai!" --- Especially since they were made only 5 or 6 years apart, and the foreign movie market was nearly nonexistant at that point - at least for the mass public.

Just like no advertisements for Vanilla Sky said that it was a remake. (Or pretty much every advertisement for every American remake I've seen - most recent being Pulse) -- So, no, I doubt Magnificent Seven flaunted that they were remaking a Japanese movie, since now people are more into seeing foreign movies, and you still rarely hear people mention when their film is a remake.

People now know that M.S. is a remake of S.S. just out of common knowledge, but I highly doubt it was ever a selling point for the film - never has been in the ads I've seen, so I don't know why it would have been different in 1960.

Just a side note, I did some research about the movie --- The director is the same one who did the RESERVOIR DOGS remake, and also remade U-TURN. Haha.

I didn't say that it was a selling point for the film. I asked if they said it. That could mean adding in at the end credits 'Based on 'Shichi-nin No Samurai' by Akira Kurosawa' or something like that, as long as someone involved with the movie said 'Hey, this is a remake/based on/inspired by the movie Seven Samurai.'

I'm never a big fan of remaking a movie because it's foreign since that just tends to close doors more than open them in terms of recognizing other countries. Oldboy is just fine on its own, there isn't any extreme cultural differences that would isolate foreign audiences (and considering that the Indian remake has scenes directly lifted from Oldboy, they wouldn't feel isolated). I just think that people should be more accepting to foreign films, most of the other continents are fine to ours. But, I'll agree that a remake of a movie to work with their culture is fine. Oldboy just doesn't really need to be adapted to a foreign culture.

I can't find anything where the makers of the movie are citing Old Boy, or even talking about it, so I see your point.

Have you been to the official website yet? Pretty sparce in the credit catagory.

The two female leads are gorgeous though.
