There was no need to even guess what was going to debut at #1, moreso how much it was going to debut with, and the answer would be...$12,355,237 (US $142,062,343). HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE stormed ahead as the 2nd highest opening for the year, and the 5th highest opening of all time, as well as certifying it as the 10th highest grossing film of the year, and the 188th of all-time. In relation to the other films in the series, it was the best opening trumping the $9.24m of The Philosopher's Stone, the $10.64m of The Chamber of Secrets, and the $11.93m of last year's The Prisoner of Azkaban. Unsurprisingly with the young wizard's appearance, all other major players fell considerably, and the other new entrants left alot to be desired. Horror sequel SAW II and the Jodie Foster thriller FLIGHTPLAN held on to their spots from last week, though respectively they lost 48% and 55% interest. Total wise, the former is on $4,402,604 (US $50,621,792), whilst the latter sits with a healthy $6,650,458 (US $76,467,950). Keira Knightley's gun-toting role as DOMINO managed to slip into the top 5, though it was uneventful with $427,159 (US $4,911,537). Unable to maintain interest, last week's #1 player THE BROTHERS GRIMM slipped 68% to #5. After two weeks the Matt Damon/Heath Ledger fantasy flick has conjured an unmagical $1,938,088 (US $22,284,422). Despite a screen count of 95, the lowest in the top 10, and nothing in promotion, the gross out comedy WAITING... managed a top 10 placing with $215,289 (US $2,475,424). After 6 weeks of smooth sailing, PRIDE & PREJUDICE took a dive this week, its 7th in release, trailing 63%. It's not going too badly overall though as the other Keira Knightley offering sits comfortably on $6,803,672 (US $78,229,627), making the 31st highest grossing film of the year. Another film taking a drop, but showing much less for its time, was THE CAVE which declined 74%, the biggest drop of the week. After 2 weeks of underground searching, Cole Hauser and Eddie Cibrian have uncovered $482,916 (US $5,552,639). In tone with last week's rise for aussie outings THE PROPOSITION and LITTLE FISH, this week saw the AFI Award winning LOOK BOTH WAYS re-enter the Top 20 with a 66% rise. All up the drama has $2,626,706 (US $30,202,254) to its name.

THIS WEEK (December 8th): Bow Wow bounces; and it's bad news for Billy Bob.
