View Full Version : WORLD CUP 2006
The Impossible Swedes that’s what I would like to call us. Great game! The English goalkeeper seemed to be a bit off today and too bad about Owen. Larsson got to score…if it was him you can’t tell because both of them are touching the ball. We did fine without Zlatan I actually think I prefer Allbäck at the moment 2-2 great and I’m happy we are through to the final 16 now facing Germany….don’t really want to think about that right now though.. Go Sweden!!

Another poor performance today from England. Quite brilliant goal from Cole. Good fighting performance from Sweden. England's defending from set pecies was amature at best.
Right now taht's out of the way. DROP FRANK LAMPARD. LEAVE STEVEN GERRARD OFF HIS FUCKING LEASH.
Christ watching England is so frustrating and i'm WELSH!!!!! Stevgen Gerrard is the best player England have and yes I include Rooney in that. Drop Lampard have Hargreeves holding and leave Gerrard take over like he can. Give Gerrard license England win this World Cup.
Forget Brazil it's Argies or England. Can Sven Boring Erricson get one thing right before he goes. Drop Lamprd Give Gerrard the license to take over.

What is this, a fucking jinx ? First its Rooney, then Phil Neville and now its Owen, and from where i saw it, it looked serious.
Anyway, next its Equador which i think is a great chance to advance to the QF

It will be if they play like they did against Germany. Pitiful. I still can't believe the English lost the lead. They're going to have to step it up on the defensive end if they want to advance.

England still need to find the right formation, I think.
I feel sorry for Owen.. still I think 4-5-1 is the way to go for England.
I think they should play with:
..................Robinson
Carragher Terry Ferdinand Cole
.........Hargreaves Lampard
Beckham ....Gerrard .........Cole
...................Rooney
Can't wait for Holland-Argentina tonight. I predict a 2-2

Since I live only 30 km from the German border I like to occassionaly watch the German TV, especially when they are covering a Holland match. In their pre-match show they were saying what a great match Holland vs Argentina would be, on paper the most exciting match-up from all group matches, it would be a celebration for football blabla. Their "soccerdoctors" predicted a 3-2 victory for Argentina and a 3-3 draw, and who could blame them looking at the history between these two teams on the WC: 1974: 4-0 victory Holland, 1978: 3-1 victory Argentina in the final, 1998: 2-1 victory Holland in a great match.
How wrong they were, 0-0, what the ****?
I'm a little bit dissappointed by how my Dutch team is playing, maybe it;s because of Van Basten's Italian background were he learned to play on result but this isn't the Dutch way:we're supposed to play very attractive football, getting praised by how fantastic we're playing and ending up with nothing. I don't mind since only one team out of 32 can win and you better lose with grace then losing like most other teams playing some ugly, result-football.
However I do see chances getting through to the semi's since were playing Portugal and probably England next. Against the Portugees we normally have some troubles however I dont think they are as strong as a few year back. England is playing really crappy and are lucky to draw against Ecuador. Rooney better get in shape fast because he's the only threat they have, even if Owen would still be available

The problem with last nights game was that there was no a whole lot riding on it.
Back in 2004 when the Czech's played the Dutch it was the 2nd game in the group if I remember correctly and it was the game of the tourni. Me and the missus were fuming because we had to miss it. So since the fixtures come out we have made sure we wern't missing last nights match. It was a good match but if it had been the 2nd match in the group I bet it would have been incredible.
It will be different today though with Italy v's Czech's.
Czech';s have to win because I think Ghana will beat the US. Italy are still not assured and if they lose and Ghana win they are out. This could be the game of the tournament.
king_verhoeven
06-22-2006, 05:46 AM
Yeah you're probably right about not a lot riding on it. However it is a WC and a lot of people paid a lot of money to see this match. I guess if either side scored an early goal it would have been a different match but now after an hour both teams weren't that interested anymore.
Props to Ivory Coast for beating Servia in what looks like a spectacular match, haven't seen it though. It's a shame they were in this group since they are one of the strongest teams i've seen this WC.
Yes today has some exciting match-ups: Australia could advance to the next round for the first time ever. And yes, Italy vs the Czech's could be mighty spectacular. Looking at how Ghana beat the Czech's you could say they will beat USA easily, and they probably will, meaning that either Italy or the Czech's will be eliminated in this round. I'm routing for the Czech's because they play some nice football and we (Holland) sort of have a connection with them playing in the preliminaries of the EC 2004 and this 2006 WC as well in the EC 2004 against them.

It is a conspiracy against the US Football team. My guess: Paul Tagliabue, Donal Stern and the dude running MLB (forgot the name) rigged the game so that "Sawccer" cannot take over the nation in case they would have won the cup.

Pretty good draw for you guys, methinks. Plus, Italy's quarterfinal game will likely be against Switzerland, South Korea, or Ukraine. Not too tough a path to the semis.
Meanwhile my team, Germany, will get Argentina in the quarters should neither side be upset this weekend. :(

Haha, understood.
But no, I didn't forget about France, in fact I think they'll win their last game and make it to the knockout stage. But unless the Switzerland/South Korea game ends in a tie, one of those 2 teams will win the group, with France 2nd. Even if France wins, they'll have to win by at least 2 goals and hope for a Switzerland/South Korea tie to claim the 1st seed in that group. France looks destined for a 1st round game against Spain.

I for one will never count out the French..two of the saddest moments in my life came in France 98 when they ousted us on penelties, and EURO 00 when they tied in injury time and beat us on a golden goal
I am not the biggest Juve supporter, but David Trezeguet is a class finisher and a delight to watch in Serie A...they need goals and arent getting them...they should start him...nothing else seems to be working
And South Korea...jeeeeeeeeeez I would love to play them in the quarters...we really owe them from 02, and this would be a great chance for a little payback...those fans are the craziest tho...its like a twelfth man on the pitch
As for a Germany v Argentina quarters, its really too bad...both are playing such great football and deserve to go farther than the quarters...mind you either the Netherlands or Portugal will go home in the next few days, so a great team will go home even sooner than the finals...
Anyone think Ghana has a chance against Brazil? I love they way the Black stars are playing, but I have a sneaky feeling that Brazil is just going to elevate to this next level as soon as the knockout stage comes, and just be unstopabble...maybe Spain or England could beat them in the quarters or semis

Well congrats to all Aussies (though what the hell was up with the referee at the very end? He lost his mind), Croatia was a strong team.
Anyways, the Mexico/Portugal game sucked. What a disgusting display of bad soccer from our team (was Rafael Marquez hung over or something? To be honest I think Ghanna has a chance against Brazil, but without Essien I don't think they can pull it off. The Refs are killing me, and a lot of possible match ups. I still think Argentina is going to have to bring their A game to get past Mexico, because after the game with the Portugese they'll be looking to save face instead of going down without a fight. After watching France blow their last game so dramatically I don't think they'll get more than a tie tomorrow. Here's to Bruce Arena getting the Larry Brown deal. :)

matches so far:
germany v sweden - i really like both teams, both are good up front, klose will continue his form and that should be enough for the win.
argentina v mexico - argentina are my tip to win the world cup and they'll continue their good forn in this match
italy v australia - im just so proud of australia making it this far. i dont know if we will win. we really have to learn to capitalise on the shots on goal we create. we have excellent ball posession however.
england v ecuador this should be easy for england. they'll start playing harder as the finals progress.
brazil v ghana it shouldn't be hard for brazil to win this one. it will be an amazing upset if they do, it will open up the competion for everyone else
my predictions for the other two matches:
sth korea v ukraine
and
switzerland v spain france have a small chance of getting in but it may not happen so im going the safe route. spain are unstoppable in their group

Been working the past 3 days so haven't been able to watch as much as I have been...Wednesday morning before work I watched Portugal-Mexico and flipping to Iran-Angola occasionally...I taped Argentina-Netherlands and didn't watch much of it after knowing the 0-0 score...
Thursday morning again before work...I obviously watched a lot of Ghana-U.S.A. and flipped to and from Czech Republic-Italy...well done to Ghana they deserved to go through...U.S. can only blame themselves...Arena's tactics were bad...4-5-1 just didn't create enough offense and the plain truth is the players didn't perform well...and some hardly even showed up! I taped the Brazil-Japan game and watched it late last night...you just know Brazil is gonna improve as the tournament progresses but it was nice to see Japan take a lead!
This morning...I watched both games switching back and forth...but pretty dreadful games...Spain had their 2nd Eleven and took the 2nd half off! And Ukraine barely managed to beat Tunisia...I watched more of that game cause more was at stake...and today while at work I taped...Switzerland-Korea Republic...and watched it when I got home...Switzerland are impressive! I've watched all their games...only team to not give up a goal so far! And they could be a spoiler in this tourney and they at least have a great chance of getting to the Quarters with only having to face Ukraine...
On the flip side of that...Trinidad & Tobago were the only team not to score a goal this World Cup which is strange because usually you have more teams go goalless.
After the first round all I can say it has been great stuff so far...and the knockout stages will be great with so many great matchups coming and all the big guns in there...only bad thing and its no secret is the officiating...too many silly yellow cards and some just bad calls lately!

Alright the round of sixteen begins TODAY!! Here are my predictions (which probably aren't worth a damn :D):
Germany v Sweden: Germany will take the home field advantage at least another round. GER 2 SWE 0
Argentina v Mexico: Probably the easiest pick of the round. Argentina in a blowout.
England v Ecuador: Ecuador was looking good until that last game which makes me think that they can't hang with the big guns. England's got injury issues but will pull it out thanks to the midfield. ENG 1 ECU 0
Portugal v Netherlands: Netherlands in a PK shootout (has to be at least one right) - they'll be tied 1-1 going into it.
Italy v Australia: Australians were lucky to make it to the round; the Italians will send them packing 2-0.
Switzerland v Ukraine: I have no idea who's going to win this one; therefore I'm going with UKR in PKs.
Brazil v Ghana: It's hard to go with a Cinderella team against the defending champs, who are looking better in every game they play. BRA 2 GHA 0
Spain v France: I haven't been very impressed with France, but I guess you could say these guys are rivals since they're European neighbors. I think Spain will pull it out in PKs in the end.

I had never been actually proud of a team after losing a game. Yes, I would've loved to see Argentina return home and Mexico go to the next round but, either way, the team played really, really well in my opinion. One of Argentina's goals was a self-goal (Borgetti's an idiot) and the other was a fluke that happens to be the best goddamned goal in the world cup thus far.
Still, my hats off to my team. At least they finished playing well.

WOW, what a finish by Maxi Rodriquez, easily the best goal of the tournament!! Haven't seen the match so don't know what team deserved the win the most.
Today first up, England vs Ecuador, I'd love to see the English go through because then we (Holland) will play against them in the QF. That will be a spectacular match, however I do not know if my faith in the English will be rewarded since England played pretty bad until now. So Ecuador certainly has a chance. I predict a 2-1 win for England.
Then we play against the Portugeas, which will be a very though match because we always struggle against them. In the last 10 years we've only won 1 game against them, so they're our "angstgegner".
I predict a 2-2 after 90 minutes, 3-2 in the end

Well once again it wasn't pretty from England...but they got the job done...the heat was a factor and the pace of the game was very slow and they pretty much played to the level of their competition...a gritty effort from Beckham dry heaving through most of the second half but defended well when he had to and there is nobody else in the world I'd rather have when it comes to taking free kicks...England still haven't played nowhere near their best and whoever they face in the next round will be a tough test!

That was a great shot by Beckham grazing the inside of the post like that. Perfectly placed. Neither team looked that impressive, but I agree with Puck Bond that the 90 degree heat was a factor. England will have to step it up in their next match if they don't want to go home sooner rather than later.

FUCK IT!!!!!!!!
I missed the Portugal - Holland match becasue I got so pissed. After sitting through another England performance that was akin to getting balls pulled of by a porshe, I was forced to drink. Then I end up missing the best match yet.
The thing with Figo. He can still be banned if the referee didn't see it. Did he see it? I hope he does because seriuosly England really need him to be if they are going to get through.
Argentina Mexico was brilliant. I was actually pulling for Mexico even though X-Nightcrawler is from there.(I kid buddy) I'm not buying that Gonzalez goal was the best of the tournament.
Here's how I see it. You can be playing in your local amature league and if you catch it right you can score a goal like that. Now your team and many others in the world could not have scored a goal like Cammbiaso's goal at the end of that incredible move from Argentina against S&M.
S&M were so bad that day you could say they had a good whipping. hahahahahahaha...............um......ok.:(

Not disgraceful at all, if you ask me. At least not from Portugal's perspective. The Dutch were far dirtier in that game, imo. Deco's first yellow was a direct result of the Dutch player taking off when he should have played the ball out. Plus, nevermind Figo's tiny headbutt which the Dutch player then completely overdramatized, but what about the Dutch player's spikes first kick on C. Ronaldo's thigh, taking Portugal's best player out of the game with no red card given. After those two things, I don't blame Portugal for playing to the level the Netherlands brought the game to.
And this is coming from a neutral observer who doesn't really care for either team.

If I'm a portugal fan I feel fan-Fucking-tastic about beating the Netherlands... Disgraceful win? Maybe to those who didn't like the result, but in the realm of the world cup they will only become disgraceful if they play like that again... Anyway Holland is at home, and Portugal isn't so I doubt they feel anything but joy... Italy winning in the 5th minute of stoppage time was ridiculous, but there's no way anyone should be sliding around the box like that, but the Dive was as graceful as the PK that followed it.
LETS GO SWISS!

Poor luck for the Aussies with the way they lost that one...was it a PK? Maybe...even if the player dived Neill can't be making a slide like that because he was nowhere near the ball! Well done to the Aussies for a good showing this tournament even though they probably deserved better. Man what great stuff...drama every game!! I hope Switzerland-Ukraine is a good match but it will be a dog-fight no matter what...and will the Swiss continue with all the group winners winning so far?

Portugal proved to be our 'angstgegner' once more. I can't say it wasn't deserved since they put the bal in the goal and we didn't. However that referee was a joke, giving a yellow card in the first minute of play set the tone and once he did that there was no way back. Figo's headbutt, although it was little, was still a headbutt and he should be given the red card. Instead he got yellow??If the ref sees it, it's red.
However what Van Basten was thinking I still don't know but no Van the Man??
Guus Hiddink and his Aussies were also fucked by the ref, giving the Italians a PK for the fake dive.
What's up with the referees this WC? First Poll giving a player of Croatia 3 yellow cards, the ref of Portugal-Holland giving 16 yellows and 4 reds, and now the Italians getting a "100%" penalty in injury-time??

That penalty kick was deserved...Neill went to ground WAY too early and stopped Grosso from being able to go forward... and in the 18 yard box, it is a penalty kick... Austrailia played well...well enough to win...Italy also played well when they were reduced to 10...just glad the Azzurri are through

That mexican refree is a joke, he was kissing the FIFA`s ass by only giving one fucking yellow card even though there was a lot of dirty tackles that deserved yellow cards. But since Blatter critisized the russian refree, he thought not giving any cards would earn him a place in the next rounds.

Yay for Italy!
Questionable penalty, but ridiculous sending off before that! I think we deserved the win, we should've been 2-0 up at half time, with Toni missing all those chances.
Buffon, Cannavaro and Zambrotta all brilliant... as usual we have to rely on our back line, arguably the best in the world.
Happy for Totti, maybe now he'll start playing well.
I feel sorry for the Aussies, they're a good team, but they had their chance and blew it IMO, they should've gone for it more, whereas it seemed like they were just waiting for the game to go to extra time.

I'm not sure what match you were watching but that penalty was the direct consequence of a discusting DIVE.
I'm fucking fed up to the back teeth of people saying the defender shouldn't have stuck his leg out or this or that......
What poeple should be saying is BAN THESE CHEATING FUCKING CUNTS. Ban the divers ban the cheats ban the players that run up to the referee and demand a player be booked or sent off.
Ban the fucking lot of them.
I remember when this game used to be played be men. Now it's played by a bunch of fucking pansies that are laid out on the floor for half an hour if someone's hand comes within 2 feet of them.
People are critisizing Figo for his pathetic little head butt the other night. What about he even more pathetic delayed reaction of Van Bommel. Fuck if he's going down from that he's got big problems.
Lucas Niel is one of the biggest cocksuckers in World Football. He's broken a few people's legs in England with terrible challenges but he plays like a man. He dishes it out and he receives it back without complaint. He made a tackle yesterday that came to a complet stop 2 yards in front of the Itallian. Then the fucker runs toward Niel and takes an horrific challenge off Niel's chest which hasn't moved for the last second and earns a penalty.
How the fuck do people like this look at themselves and their family in the face. Fuck if I went home after doing that my Missus or my Father would kick me out of the house.

Man, I knew Ghana was going to be tough - but I didn't think this tough. I think the only reason Brazil is up 2-0 is because they've been here before and know how to finish a play. Ghana's had more opportunities, but they just couldn't finish.
And congrats to Ronaldo for getting the record. YAY!! :D

06-27-2006, 12:57 PM
Applause for Ghana from me...the 3-0 scoreline does not do them justice...because they played very well and really controlled the game...Brazil cashed in on their chances...and probably should of had more...Ghana got burned on the offside trap all day...but they played to win and I give 'em all the credit in the world for that effort!

Now people may have picked up on this but I really hope Brazil fall flat on their face. I have nothing against them personaly and I love their football. But in this country they are potrayed as THE TEAM and all they need to do is turn up to win it. The commentators talk about them as if they are demi Gods. Even today I was having it slammed down my throat.
Pisses me off.
So maybe this post is biased. Brazil will not win this Cup. I'm sure of it. And we all know how fucking spot on I am when I predict something. #They just don't look right. If Ghana had a striker that could put the ball in the net they would have beaten Brazil today.
I'm not buying the exscuse they are saving themselves or playing their way in. Brazil don't play their way in. There is only one way they know how to play. And it ain't bysaving themselves.
Congrats to Ronaldo. Deserves to be the fattest score...........um I mean top scorer of all time.:D No seriously congrats.
Now onto tonight. I'm torn. I don't like the French team but the Spanish manger is a racsist son of a bitch. But I like his team. I go for a Spain win and the mangaer to get killed by a falling giant screen.

Unfortunately, I agree. I'm Brazilian by birth and root for them all the way, but they will not survive if they play like they did against Ghana again, especially against Germany or Argentina. Ghana was just inexperienced and it showed - kicking it right to the goalie and shooting the ball way out of bounds. But they showed a lot of heart and determination and the Brazilian goalie did have to keep on his toes. Plus, they also showed a lot of respect towards the Brazilians - helping them up and doing that head caressing thing that soccer players do.
It's also a shame that one of them got red carded (2nd yellow) for diving; it was unnecessary as hell and a shame he felt he had to do that.

Really a terrific game between France and Spain with the French pulling it out in the end...a good clean game and one of the most enjoyable of this WC...Ribery was terrific for France running all over the field and getting France on the board to tie it up...nice to see Zidane get the late goal to clinch it!
Sets up a terrific Quarterfinals...I'm not in the habit of predicting games(mainly because I don't want to jinx my team England) but I will say something about each game.
Germany-Argentina...what a great matchup this will be probably the two teams playing the best football throughout the tourney, Germany has the host nation advantage and Argentina have so much depth and talent...there is also a little bit of a bitter rivalry between the two, I especially remember the contenious 1990 World Cup final.
Italy-Ukraine...obviously the weakest matchup of the Quarters...but the biggest story will be of course Shevchenko playing against the Italians with whom he should be very familiar with after playing for AC Milan for the last several years...
England-Portugal...all I'll say is I like England's chances(they have to play a good game sooner rather than later) and it would be great to avenge the EURO 2004 loss...just no Penalty Kicks please!!! I couldn't handle that!
Brazil-France...what's to say...the 1998 World Cup final should be plenty of motivation for Brazil, but based on the way they played against Ghana they'll have to do better...personally I would love to see France knock 'em off again and give Zidane, Henry and company a chance to continue.

i agree with most of this.
I am going to go with an Italy and Brazil win. The other 2 are more tricky. You'd expect Aregntina to win but Germany have been playing well but home adantage can never be written off. Then ther is the England Portugal match. I'd expect England to produce a performance and win but it's in the middle of the day and England have been strugiling with the heat.
I'm gonna go with a semi line up of:
Argenetina v's Italy
England v's Brazil

I agree.
Argentina and Germany will be the match of the quarterfinals. It's really a toss up if you ask me and while Germany does have home field advantage, Argentina still has their fans around as well. I'm taking a more skilled Argentina.
I think Italy will play better than they did against the Australians. They want to prove something this time around.
England's injuries still worry me as far as their chances of going all the way. They'll keep moving up as long as Beckham gets free kicks close to the goal. They'll squeak by Portugal.
I still don't think that France is that impressive. You guys may say that Brazil hasn't been that impressive, but they've won their matches a combined 10-1. I'll take Brazil over France.

This will be so close... I'm gonna agree with bob and go for GERMANY. They've been playing very well and apart from their defence, they have a pretty good team, esp in midfield.
Italy-Ukraine
ITALY hopefully...
England-Portugal
I'm sorry, I don't see England winning this... even without Deco I predict a Portugal win. It will be very tight though. It will come down to how well England's midfield performs IMO.
Brazil-France
Again I agree with bob. This will be exciting and very close. I predict a 3-2 BRAZIL win.

Fight? What fight? I was way to busy wiping away my totally manly happy tears after The Jens saved the last penalty.
Scorpio, I want details....
The "tortoise and the hare" comment was in reference to Argentina's all-out style in the round-robin portion, while Germany often played conservatively and then dominated teams late in the game or after the other side tired out.
And that's kinda what happened...Lehmann came up huge in that game.
So that's one more team I don't like out of the tournament, and one more team I love into the semifinals.

Watched the first 90 minutes of Germany-Argentina this morning before I had to go to work...taped the rest and taped the Italy-Ukraine game...
Once Germany tied it up I knew they were gonna win...it was inevitable...Argentina were gassed and they really showed it towards the end and into extra-time...
I should have said this before the Quarterfinals because I've felt it since then...a European team is definitely winning this WC...sorry Argies go home...and Brazil you're shit outta luck!
Italy taking care of Ukraine was no big surprise...but you have to say Ukraine were game especially in the 2nd half creating numerous good chances...anyway Ukraine should just be happy they made it this far and be proud of themselves...now that the pretenders are out...all we have left are big boys! See I was really dissapointed in Ukraine. I know it's their first World Cup and all and congrats for getting as far as they did but I still can't help and feel that was a very poor effort.
They were 90 minutes away from a Semi Final. At half time I was thinking for God sakes have a go. You may as well lose 3-0 and have a go than go out with a whimper 1-0. Still is even though thye lost 3-0 I still felt like they didn't give it a go. It was almost like they belived there was no way they could beat the Italians and thats just cowardice.
Anyway on to todays matches. i'm excited for today. The roof is being closed for the English match. Now they are saying that it will make it cooler but surely that would give it a geenhouse effect. Back where I live in Wales we have The Millenium Stadium which was the 1st one in the world to have a roof. The atmosphere it creates is amazing but fuck me it ain't half hot.
I'd like to see France beat Brazil but I don't see that happening.

DAAAAAMMMMNNNNNN!!!
If Rooney got sent off for that little push, that's a bit much. I'd give it a yellow card, but it was barely a shove. It was stupid of him to do it in the first place, no doubt about that, but it didn't deserve a red.
Maybe it was something he said.

Portugal needs to lose... i've lost all respect for Christian Ronaldo, what a bullshit card on Rooney...
As far as player attitudes goes, this match is like men (England) playing boys (Portugal). Down two of their biggest stars, England's gonna have to be gutsy to win this.
That red card was total bullshit...agreed that a yellow would have been appropriate, but the step was accidental and the push was marginal at most.
Crouch, Lennon, and Hargreaves are playing a game, though...

That England victory gets less embarassing as more time passes and I watch the replay...they fought just as hard, and did not get outplayed, it was the kinda game where the fates were just against them. When your captain/superstar gets injured TWICE (knee, achilles), it's bound to a rough road. But I gotta say, when the camera cut to Posh in the stands I stopped feeling bad for Beckham pretty damn fast.
And as for the other game, my boys in France outplayed Brazil in every way. Deserved the win. A WC Final win for Brazil would've been boring, anyway.

Many teams act, yes...but England and Australia are not amongst them. They get fouled, go down, get back up, and, if they've really been injured, it shows....
And I don't know about you, but if my team defeated a team that had its captain and best player leave less than halfway through and got another kicked off from a red card ten minutes later, by two penalty kicks, notable even less because of England's famous ineptitude at penalty kicks, I wouldn't label it "ass-kicking".
If anything, all the game showed after the 62nd minute was that a ten-man England squad compares favorably with an eleven-man Portugal squad.

But this and other english talking forums are so biased I can't even begin to describe it. Yes, "you play with fire, you get burned", but still... impartiality doesn't reign here... How many times did you read in this topic "Fuck Portugal"? And how many "Congratulations, Portugal" or "Fuck England"? I find it disrespectful when people say "Fuck Portugal" because I'm portuguese, and basically, IMO, you're saying "Fuck You".

It's funny you mention that, because I'm exactly the opposite. That's why I REALLY want Germany to win this tournament. I just think it makes for a great story if the host country defends it's turf successfully. Even if Germany bombs out in the next two tournaments, it will definately be worth it if they can win this one. I'm much more nervous about this tourney than I've ever been in the past, and ever will be again, since it will be a very long time until Germany gets another World Cup after this one.
It doesn't just apply to Germany, though. 4 years ago I was rooting for South Korea and/or Japan to do great, (which they both did. In particular South Korea.) In 1998 I wanted France to do great, which they did. In 1994, well, I wasn't rooting for the U.S. to do well. It's a whole Canada/U.S. thing. We Canucks just love seeing the U.S. do badly. So the U.S. is the only exception. Just like four years from now, Go South Africa!
And by the way, when is the tournament going back to Brazil? 1950 was the last time. I think England should be hosts in 2014, (they seem to be doing a Europe, non-Europe, Europe, non-Europe pattern, and they haven't hosted since 1966, when they won), and then Brazil in 2018. Netherlands should be hosts soon, too. Maybe 2022. I guess I'm getting ahead of myself now, though.

Hmm, interesting fact I just found out that you may or may not know, but I thought I'd mention it anyways for those who don't.
Q: Who is the only nation that has won at least one World Cup, that has never won it at home?
A: Brazil.

That wasnt on purpose, and even if it was, i wouldnt mind at all.
Well, " your team " are not going to act against France, cause the pain caused by Viera is going to be real, nobody messes with that fucker, especially a pussy like Ronaldo.
I know we`re going to miss some oscar winning performances against France, but thats football.
And, just to bust your balls a little bit, FUCK PORTUGAL.
Brazil isn't "boring" per se, I just grew sick of them as the tournament went on. And given how much shit a very talented France team took at the beginning of the tournament, they're a much more interesting addition to the semis.
And as for the whole Portugal incident, I just assumed people would know I'm making no comment about the Portugese people at all...it's a beef I have with the team.
All I can say that's gracious about the match is that Portugal is a much better team at penalties, and Ricardo and Cristiano Ronaldo both stepped up for your team when it counted the most.
But the 120 minutes of soccer that preceded it...I think those favor the English side in many ways.
Anyway, Beckham resigned as the captain of the English team today, although he'll stay on. I think it's a fair decision, he has increasingly become a role player on both the national and club teams, so a new captain can't hurt. Also, his knee and achilles injuries will keep him out 6 weeks, so he'll probably miss that much publicized Real Madrid-MLS game.

Yeah man, I don't know. Could go either way. Like we're used to say here: "prognostics, only after the game".
We're also getting used to all this bad hype surrounding our team... "Yeah, you guys suck... You're gonna loose to Mexico..."; "You're gonna loose to Holland"; "You're gonna loose to England"; "Without Deco and Costinha you have no chance",... etc.
Frankly, if we loose to France (which I hope we don't, of course... I want a little payback because of Euro 00 ;) ), I wouldn't be all that shaken like the brits have been these past two days. Like you so well say, Jason: "That's football". :p

Basicaly, the referee sending Rooney off, who commited a violent aggression against R. Carvalho, is Ronaldo's fault, because before the game he said he was going to get Rooney sent off.

Yes you are. Germany is the most beloved team left in the tournament. By hating the German team, you have forever lost both your civil rights and your status as a human being. ;-)
Which kind of sucks for you, I guess
That mirror article was a laugh...I, for one, am wagering Ronaldo and Rooney make things up, at least nominally, and both have outstanding campaigns next season at Man U...but Rooney will probably see less spikes-up tackles.
And the Germany team is fantastic...every starter and oft-used sub is likable, talented, and hard-working. Probably the best team in the tournament.

And you know what's worst!!??? I just heard in the news, that in Germany (don't know where), the english fans stoned the Portuguese fans (greatly outnumbered), kicking them out of wherever they were watching the game... BUT, REALLY, THE WORST... IS THAT THE PORTUGUESE HAD CHILDREN WITH THEM!! YES, YOU ENGLISH FANS, WITH ALL YOUR "CLASS", STONING CHILDREN!!
... This is something I will remember.
You English holligans?
What?
I've read some pathetic things in my time.......but that's the winner right there. All English fans are holligans. Of course every last one of us. Maybe we should just become like The Portugese national team and become holligans on the pitch or is that pussies becuse I tell ya I really can't tell.
Before you go flapping your gums about holliganism get your facts straight pal. 1st of all i've checked news reports everywhere on the net and I can't find one shred of video evidence that supports the crap you just put up there. Children? Prove it. Show me some fottage because the whole fucking city is under video survailance. If it happened they would love to try and bury the English with the footage. So prove it.
2nd of all. English holligans?
Spain - Openly racisit chants nearley every game. Monkey noises being made constantly. People throwing pigs heads onto the pitch at players. Not to mention they have an openly racist coach as manager of the national team.
Eastern Europe - Match after match there are racist chants and monkey noises.
Italy - The founders of holliganism. The Inter Ultra's are the most renowned user's of violence in football on the planet.
Turkey - Several stabbings of English fans whenever we have to go over there for a European match. Including the murder of 2 Leeds fans a few years ago.
South America - I haven't got the typing space.
Just check out this link about Football holiganism before you start labeling the English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_hooliganism)
I've been to a few big matces where there has been violence. Once where we were attcked by the police for singing. Next day it ws holligans riot. Another time some absolute idiot threw a bottle at a police man causing quite a few people to get seriuosly filled in by the Police that day even though no-one was fighting back. Next day holligans riot.
Not just that but there was a bit of trouble between the English and German fans the other day when they clashed after singing and joking got taken the wrong way. Police on the tv saying English fans rioting. They showed footage of 7 plastic chairs being thrown by English and Germans. Caption on screen: English fans riot. 7 hours later they were still all in the same place singing at each other,. Don't you think if they really wanted to get at each other they would. Next day German police apologise for over reacting by saying English rioted.
Ooooh wait what's this. The English are actually ok. SHOCK!!!!! (http://www.thefa.com/England/SeniorTeam/NewsAndFeatures/Postings/2004/06/TributetoFans.htm)
TAKEN FROM FIFA. THIS WAS BLAMED ALL ON THE ENGLISH
In Dortmund, a torrent of thrown bottles and chairs erupted. Of the 429 fans arrested Wednesday, 278 were German, 119 were Polish and the others came from different European countries that were not listed separately. All but three of them were released by Thursday.
The same site also congartulates the English for not being baited into violence by local trouble makers. The world's gone crazy huh?
So talk about things you know son because the way you're talking here you ain't got a clue about this.
As for being bad losers. Are you real? The English are extremley good losers. They've got used to going out to penalty heartbreak or cheating. We are used to it because so few people or teams play with any kind of dignity or like men anymore. Regardless of our(British) past i'd much rather have a few idiot fans in our ranks and have a football team that plays fair and plays with heart and like men than a team that tries every trick in the book. I'd rather have a team I can be proud of than a team that disgrace's the country.
Also you really want to talk about being bad loser's? This coming from the team that stormed off the pitch before the end of extra time because France were awarded a penalty in Euro 2000. Figo and Xavier left the field calling off the other players even though Xavier clearly handled a ball in the area.Figo: I'm a big bitch. It is a conspiracy. Unfortunately I can't prove it, I saw it on the news on TV... There was a TV reporter fleeing some place (at the same time she was making her story), with portuguese fans behind her, running with their children.
If I could put it on the net, I would, but I didn't record it... It was a story by SIC, a portuguese TV station.
Besides, you want proof for something... the same way I could ask proof that Ronaldo said that to Rooney before the match (and no, a statement from him doesn't count, because we can say he's lying like you are saying C. Ronaldo is a liar) and I could ask proof that the referee sent Rooney off because of C. Ronaldo, NOT BECAUSE WHAT HE DID TO R. CARVALHO.
Concerning hooliganism... so, you're saying you don't have hooliganism (http://www.sundaymail.co.uk/news/tm_objectid=17288219&method=full&siteid=64736&headline=battle-of-stuttgart--name_page.html)? In one of the links you point out (Wikipedia), I read: "Following good behaviour in Japan 2002 and Portugal 2004 the English reputation has improved. However, with Germany 2006, incidences of hooliganism have again taken place with over two hundred arrests in Stuggart with rioting between England and German fans."

I tell you, you are not good loosers... And no, journalists all around the world are NOT like this (in terms of magnitude). The british tabloids are the worst. They only see what they want to see, and even make up stories.

I guess that's because they are the english press. Is the potuguese press writing anything about Maniche? Or Ronaldo? Or Ricardo laughing at "those English boys"? No, because no national tabloid is objective.
But since this whole thing is about the class of the players, lets focus on these two quotes:
Ricardo - "those english boys, when they see me they see the devil"
Lehmann - "I just did what was expected of me, when you are a german goalkeeper people expect you to win the penalty shootout"
both quotes are borderline arrogant, but which is more classless?

I don't know where to start.
1st point. Myself and others and the English press have been calling the Portugese team cheats especialy Ronaldo. You respond with a broad raical attack on the English as whole. Not the team. The nationals. Then above you tell me we are the worst. Pull of the blinkers son. English fotball has been at the forefront of making football safer. Eliminating racsim and banishing holliganism. It has done more than any othe nation. ANYONE.
As you will note. None of the above that I have said about the other footballing nations happens in English football. But don't let that stop you making racist claims against the English.
Another link you will clearly not read. (http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/007200607022069.htm)
Let me cut you out a bit from the above link. Read it and maybe you can see how outdated your insults are.
He said that England fans, who had suffered from a reputation because of events nearly a decade ago, had been seen in a new light not just by Germany, by the world.
``It's been an extraordinarily positive contribution made to the tournament as a whole by English supporters,'' he said.
``The English fans said before the World Cup that they are the champions in partying,'' said Gerd Graus, spokesman of the organizing committee. ``They have proved that here.''
I especialy like this bit.
FIFA communications director Markus Siegler said: ``We can only commend the German authorities for the fantastic job they've been doing. In general, England fans are among the best in the world.''
It's funny how what you spout can't be proven and it was just something that you happened to see on TV. All news channels keep on line videos but you can't find one. Convieniant.
Am I supposed to read the link you have posted about the Portugese being threatned by the English and say oh well. It's on a portugese website. Must be true. No matter that this would be a nice convieniant story to potray the Enlgish in the old sterotypical racist light. And as a bonus we would not need a stroke of evidence to run the story. Cool lets do that.
I live in town which has had an absolutley massive influx of Portugese immigrants over the last 2-3 years. A portugese slaughter house opened up on the outskirts of the town. Now they satrted bringing thousnads of Portugese accross and piad them appitance. Not only was it sad because of the way they were used and treated but it also robbed the surrounding areas of thousands of jobs. Now you would think that such a situation would defintiley keep the Portugese at home maybe worried that the tensions of the match and loss of jobs were just to much for us simple minded holligans. Strange then that before during and after the match Portugese fans were singng arguing and drinking with the fans who were supporting England. I had several very strong arguments with Portugese and other Welsh people that didn't want England to win abot the game. Same as I would have had if we were playing a team from Saturn. And amazingly even a primitive holligan like me managed to stay calm and just ya know talk!!!!!
Rooney got sent off becasue of that cheating whining cunt Ronaldo. You know his team mate and supposed friend. Want proof watch the video's. The ref is indicating for a free kick nothing else. Then super cunt comes running in and when Rooney pushes him the ref straight away pulls Rooney away and goes for his card. It speaks for itself. If you can't see that i'm not surprised in the slightest. Also Sven Goran Ericsson said in his press conference. - The ref told me he sent him off when he hit him(Ronaldo). Self explanitory.
And as for the press. Wake up. The English are not in the league of the Spanish or the Brazillians. Fuck if Real Madrid start having a bad run of games the press go berserk. Let's not forget The SPanish have a paper soley to run stories on Real Madrid. The Brazillian team has been slagged off like hell in Brazil and they won ewvry game up to Saturday night. The French team have had to put up with thier press encouraging the fans to boo the Ntional team when they play in Paris which they duely did. Are the English press bad? Yes. are they worse than any other? No
Ronaldo was hated in this country long before the World Cup because he tries all that shit in every game he plays. Foreign players in Enlgand are given God like staus and are held in high regard for they professionalism and technical ability. Ronaldo is hated because he's a cheat and a proud one at that.
So far that's all you've put down is numerous racist accusations at the English. Holligans, the worst don't forget. That they are racists because they would kill people from another nation because their team lost. Are you real.
Post proof. PROOF!!!!!!
And do a little research into hollaganism around the world then come back to me and tell me the English are the worst. What a joke.
Whatever way you want to spin it The Portugese team are cheaters and they are scum. I can't wait to see them crash out. You will note how I said the National team not the Nationals. Prehaps you could learn something there.

The ball was crossed into the box. It hit his hand. His hand was above his waist. It was a penalty in my view. In others no. That's football people make their own minds up. But to have a go at Beckham or say he's cheating for wanting a penalty......
Your reasons and arguments are getting thin. Best get back to comething about the English being thugs who like to kill people from other nations if they lose to them in football.
Fuck that's still funny no matter how many times I read it.

Ericksson says don't kill him about Rooney. Because the nation as a whole is a little annoyed at him for falling for the tricks of a renowned cheat.
Look even Erickson is worried the English are going to go on a killing spree.

OOhhh... this is getting tiresome. One portuguese against a lot of english is unfair... we have to find a more impartial field.
Hooliganism maybe almost dead in England (don't know, I don't live there, I'll believe you), but it still exists. See the videos.
And of course England has done more against hooliganism than any country. England is the country that has (or had) it the most! They have (or had) to!!
Can you really say, after watching the videos... there isn't hooliganism anymore? So, what's that...? A tea party?
And calling me "racist" is a bit ironic, no...?
My spout can't be proven, and for the looks of it, yours neither. I'll try to find the TV video. You try to find a video of C. Ronaldo saying to Rooney: "I'm gonna get you sent off", ok?
And it's not my fault you can't read portuguese (the site you are talking about is brazilian, but that's ok, it's basically the same). There are online translators that translate webpages. Try that.

See maybe that's your problem. You don't really look at the facts do you? I don't think there is even one English person arguing with you. So far i've seen a Welsh man a German and A Danish guy. But never mind hey?
Of course holligism is still around. Unless violence is banished from society it won't be banished from Sport. Difference is. Everytime England fans fight or get in touble there is uproar even though other nations fans are doing the same. There hasn't been trouble in an English ground for years. Every week in Turkey and Italy there is some but oh ha nothing is said.
And why is it ironic calling you racist? Why exactly is that ironic?
Because I called the Portugese team divers? Cheats? Um no. That's telling it like it is. You throw stereotypical accusations at the English. Difference.
I don't know who's post's you are reading but I haven't argued Ronaldo said he would get Rooney sent off. I believe he probably did and meant it as a joke but I haven't said anything about that incident.
You however have just been harping on about the press and holliganism. Well that's great but it has absolutley nothing to do with Ronaldo's cheating or his disgracefull wink to Scholari when Rooney was sent off.
You've failed to mention any of that or the fact you were played off the pitch even when England had 10 men. Because it;s easier to talk about some fighting or the press isn't it?
And you've missed my point about the Brazillian website. I don't need to speak Portugese. The story can be made up without a thread of evidence. Something you're adept at.
This is the facts. Portugal players.....PLAYERS are cheats. Against The Dutch agianst the English. Ronaldo is and has been since the day he arrived in England a cheat.
How do you respond. ENGLISH ARE HOLLIGANS.
The best thing is all this God shit that's being talked by Ricardo. We won because God wanted us to. And all this pointing up ito the air while playing. Yes he'd be well impressed.

Actualy as you don't seem to realise what the true meaning of Irony is i'll give you an example.
Rooney was fouled for about 15 seconds before he stepped on the Portugese.
If he'd been like half the Portugese team and dived he'd have earned a rightfull free kick and the sending off would never have been.
Now that's ironic.

But I do agree with, Scorpio. We need to talk more about football. And more about results:
Portugal won and England lost. And Ricardo is a GOD.

Very good point there. I don't think Rooney knows how to dive, which I find very refreshing. 'Cause the sad thing is diving happens way too much in Football.
I especially like the "holding face and falling down like my heart exploded" act done by some players if another player confronts them face to face.
I think the FIFA, UEFA, or whoever the responsibla governing bodies are should hand out bans if it can be proven that a player acted like that.
And also, while I'm at it: when a player does this whole "give him a card, for he did horrible things to me and/or my teammate" routine, a designated player from the accused team should be allowed to bitchslap him back to where he came from.
That new position shall be called the "Designated Bitchslapper", and bouncers from Reeperbahn will be the main recruting targets.
Who's with me???

Haha i'm with you with bells on.
It's a sad fact that football in the majority is played by cheating low lives that will do anything it takes to win. FIFA harp on about fair play. What a joke. They don't know the meaning of the words. Ban anybody that does what you have mentioned above for a month. It will soon dissapear.

DAMMIT! The FIFA suspended Torsten Frings for two games for bitchslapping Julio Cruz.
The bitchslapping itself wasn't the offense, but Frings wasn't the Designated Bitchslapper for that game. It's still a new rule, and players will have to get used to it.
an addition to that rule: how about a Designated Bitchslappee, a guy who just gets pummled all the time?
I think I'm on to something here, somebody get me Sepp Blatters phone number!

But back to Frings being banned: I think the english media just got overtaken by the italian media, they played a mayor role in the suspension, as they provided the photographic evidence and urged the FIFA to do something.
I know that I'm not being objective or reasobable here, but this sucks. sucks big donkey balls. really. it sucks.

Unfortunately I can't comment on that. I've only seen the Portugal games on public TV channels. These greedy cable bastards here have put almost all the other games on an extra PPV cable channel that I don't have. And I refuse to spend more money just to see it one month. But that's another war...
To be fair, I think the person most to blame for the entire Ronaldo/Rooney fiasco is the ref. Whether or not Rooney gave Ronaldo a small push, whatever Ronaldo said, the ref should've yellow-carded him, not red-carded him.
Then this entire conversation would be over.
Having Frings out hurts Germany, but as long as Klose, Ballack, and Lehmann play, I'll give them the advantage...
I've noticed the goalkeepers are a lot like the goalies in hockey: they have that kind of badass, cocky persona. And Jens Lehmann has it more than anyone.
Paul Robinson's got a pretty good "I'm better than you" stare, too, though.

Frings is a douche and the only player I really dislike in the German team so I'm not too upset. I'll still be cheering for France to win it, with Portugal as my second choice.
England was and is my favorite team, but I don't think Portugal won by "cheating" or anything. I intensely dislike Figo and Ronaldo but England played pathetic all tournament long and the finish was expected, though once again completely heartbreaking. Sobering up a few days later, they didn't deserve to win. Erikkson is a horrible tactical coach and I'm glad he's gone.
By the way, whoever said that Portugal are dirty cheating bastards and is cheering for Italy...Whoa, daddy... the irony. :D

That's an interesting question... I guess everyone was expecting England to win, and since they didn't, Portugal's surprising victory took center stage (I love being the underdog).
I also didn't help, now did I... ?... But don't worry, I won't come back to that.
France has been gradually becoming stronger and stronger. I think their football "fits" more in ours, so if both teams play at their level, I foresee a very evenly match. Could go either way.
No matter the score, I'm already happy for reaching this far! The portuguese team has to be commended by the effort that they've shown all through the world cup.
And I think the portuguese people have been up to the task of retributing that effort. I only wish the users of this forum could see the partying that has gone through Portugal these past days... it's just crazy.

just in the official FIFA Fan Zones there have been way over 10 Million viewers until now. Can you beat that? ;-)
From what I've seen so far this entire World Cup has been a great success, and has given Germany a nice vibe of unity and positivity, something that has been missing for a long, long time.
The flipside: during the las few weeks, german politicians have decided upon some increases in taxes & healthcare costs. After the World Cup is over, it will be very sobering....

oh, of course, sorry. How does one judge the qualtity of celebrating again? Is there some sort of scale? :-P
I mean, sadly enough I haven't witnessed any of the madness first hand, because I'm "stuck" in the middle east, but from what I have heard from my friends back home it is absolut pandemonium whenever the German Team plays.
And what's way more important than the number of people or the quality of their partying: it seems like it's finally ok for Germans to wear their countrys colours with pride, something that we weren't able to do for about 60 years.
That will be the lasting thing I will remember from this World Cup, no matter who wins it in the end...

You know what, I really don't care.
Of course I would go totally bonkers if Germany would win the cup, but I would also be happy if Zidane could hoist the trophy before saying au revoir.
And if I try really, really, really (really!) hard, I could probably find something likeable about Portugal or Italy (their national teams that is, I got nothing against the countries or the people).
On second thought: screw that, Germany & France in the final! :-)

I'm with you on this. I wanted Germany to win but then my mate mentioned it would be nice for a player of ZZ's quality to lift the cup in his last ever game.

Yeah, Italy's been good this year. Solid, boring team as usual. But I don't think you've really been tested this year yet. Australia? Ukraine? Italy had a fairly easy path to this stage, and I think that's one reason people aren't talking that much about you. Yet.

Well, I'm suddenly pretty pessimistic about Germany's chances. :(
Ballack and Frings are two of Germany's best players, and they're both midfielders. Ballack could barely walk at the end of the quarterfinal game, and Frings is out because Argentina decided to start a fight after they lost. Germany figures to be very weak now in the middle, a previous team strength, and Italy might dominate possession as a result.
Add to that the fact that Italy haven't allowed their opponents to score yet, and that they have the best goalie in the world, I think Italy will win.:(
I really hope I'm wrong. GO GERMANY!!!
Quick Scorpio. Pick Italy to win this game, it's Germany's only hope. ;)
