How many times a year do we hear this? A new record gets broken at the box office every Friday. Seems that any movie that makes over $20 million on it's opening weekend is breaking records. "Such and such made the highest opening ever in February!" "'Sit On My Dick' broke records this weekend by having the highest opening ever for a movie whose title consisted of four words that was released on 832 screens while it was 42 degrees in North Carolina!!"
Broken records don't really mean shit anymore.

While I've never heard of "Sit on my DIck," I don't think it's as big a deal as you're making it out to be. It's just news for stuidos to brag about and use in their marketing campaigns. And it's not that difficult for a movie to break a January or February record since that's when movies that tend to suck are released.

Well it's big news for the company that shelled out the money for the movie. Same way these companies pump up newspaper reviews on every goddmaned commercial it can.
"Frank Whalen of the Chicago Tribune says "This is one powerful movie. A must see. If you don't see this movie, you hate your family and the terrorists win!"
I personally think its bullshit myself. Record breaking, hunh?
Whatever.

Oh my God! I could barely finish reading this it was too funny! I'm still cracking up! Maybe it's because I'm tired and it's late and I'm happy about being out of school tomorrow, but this is the funniest shit I've seen all night! You should definitely think about writing a humor book bitching about anything and everything!

Excellent rant. They place so many parameters and asterisks over their statements, rendering them meaningless. It's the same thing with sports statistics -- "The Cubs are 14-12 since 1998 against the Astros in games at Minute Maid park where the teams have been tied after 4 and 2/3 innings." ??.

Hey, I like records like that, it gives me a little bit of hope. Thats better than, "The Cubs are 4-523 when Corey Patterson bats leadoff and Jerome Williams is the starting pitcher."

Box office, in general, means less these days than it did back when theaters were the main source of income for movies. Now the DVD market is 3-4 times more lucrative than the box office. An article I quoted in the link below says that theatrical releases have essentially become a marketing pad for video games, pay tv, dvd, and other products.
And you have to remember that theaters take between 30-70% of the cut (depending on what week of release it is). The production companies make higher profits in the beginning and lesser profits after a month or longer. Even though Box Office does generate a significant amount of revenue for the production companies, sometimes the box office payoff is slightly more than the millions spent on advertising. Commercials aren't cheap.
If you guys are interested in reading about this, I've cited some articles about this issue in this thread:

Box office is certainly BS, but I'm definitely interested in following the breakout films. It is, afterall, the financially successful films that set the tone on what we are likely to see in the future.
