I didn't see a thread on this movie which is coming out this friday, I so I though I would make one.

The Producers

Limited Release: December 16th, 2005.
Everywhere: December 25th, 2005.

Plot: Two-time Tony Award winners Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick return to their celebrated roles as Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom, a scheming theatrical producer and his mousy CPA who hit upon the perfect plan to embezzle a fortune: raise far more money than you need to produce a sure-fire Broadway flop and then (since no one will expect anything back), Max and Leo can pocket the difference. To do this, they need the ultimate bad play, which they find in the musical Springtime for Hitler. Their plans come to naught and the duo are taken completely by surprise when their new production is hailed as a toast-of-the-town hit. Will Ferrell also brings his spot-on comic talents to the role of Franz Liebkind, the neo-Nazi playwright (and pigeon fancier) responsible for penning the "worst play ever written." (From joblo.com)

Thoughts? Anticipation? Dread? Comments? Differences from the broadway show? Discuss!!

Personally, since I never saw the broadway show, I am looking forward to this.

It's nominated at the Golden Globes for:
Best Picture
Best Actor (Nathan Lane)
Best Supporting Actor (Will Ferrel)

In all honesty, love the original (10/10) but I saw the musical and I wans't impressed. The added songs and scenes (with character changes) in my opinion ruin what made the original so great. I'm hoping this is good though (although I don't like the cast that much, especially Ferrell).

BTW, does anyone know where this is playing on friday in LA?
Thanks.

I never saw the broadway show and maybe it's just because I loved the original with Mostel & Wilder...but I found the trailer for this version to be completely unfunny and stale.

Small chance I'll be seeing this.

I haven't seen Mel Brook's original but I found the trailer for this movie to be positively hysterical! I'm very much looking forward to this. Will Ferrel in particular looks really funny here.

I'm seeing it tuesday. The original film is a classic, the play was great, so I expect this to be nothing different.

Oh shit Cronos. Your new avatar reminded me that I forgot to watch that awesome Tales from the Crypt episodes, "All Through the House."
Just thought I'd mention that.
Anyway, I saw this last week and I was un-impressed. I'm an adorer of the original, love it to death, and the play I was impartial to the play. Before the film, I didn't think the soure was musical-material. I was right; 5/10.

Aside from the shitty directing this was pretty cool. Appearances by David Huddleston, Jon Lovitz, Richard Kind, Michael McKean all made me smile. Nathan Lane was fantastic and looked like Zero Mostel. Roger De Bris and Carmen Ghia were played by the guys who played them in the broadway production and they were great.

A fun movie.

I saw this 2 weeks ago, and loved it. At first, it seemed a little strange(i've never seen the original or the play). It took a while for me to get used to Matthew Broderick's character. He was just too weird, but towards the middle, he had me laughing. Will Ferrel was great as usual, and by the end of the movie, I had a huge smile on my face. It was a really good time at the movies, and I recommend it if you want to laugh. It took a little while to get going, but once the "keep it gay" song kicked in, it had me on the floor. 9/10.

I found "The Producers" to be the funniest movie of 2005...I laughed non-stop throughout this movie. It had just a wild, uninhibited sense of fun to every frame. The colors, the performances, the light (and frothy) musical sequences...each somewhat different from the next. Will Ferrell was hilarious, though not Golden Globe worthy, and Uma is drop-dead gorgeous and funny...and Uma belts...

Hilarious and Up-beat, "The Producers" was one of my ten favorite films of the year! (****-stars, 9/10)

This movie scared me at first. After the opening song and dance number, this movie got bad. REALLY bad! I mean it was PAINFUL! Mathew Broderick and Nathan Lane were wildly overacting. It was just godawful. Fortunately, the movie got better starting with Jon Lovitz's hilarious cameo and that really awsome song and dance number with Broderick. Also, while they were still a bit over the top, Lane and Broderick dialed it down a bit and the movie just got better from there on. There were still a couple of other bad scenes and there was one or two scenes where I was afraid that movie would go back to the painful begining. Fortunately it never did. Also, the gay stuff didn't really work for me. The way too broadly gay stereotyping makes Will & Grace look subtle by comaparison. But on the upside, Uma Thurman and Will Farrell give hilarious performances.

Overall, it was a little uneven but just good enough to get by.
