View Full Version : WHY?! WHY?! WHY?!

Why do you have to be 18 to work at a video store? I went to Movie Gallery a few days ago and started filling out an application. I should've known that I would be asked how old I was, so it should've come as no surprise that I have to wait until late next year to try again. I was told that they don't hire "minors" because of the "adult room" in the back. Okay, so I can't vote, I can't enter contests online or television, AND I can't sell movies? What the fuck?! I'm 17 and I'm in college and high school at the same time (special program) and I've met a lot of adults who are a lot less mature than I am. I always thought I'd be a good person to employ, but apparently not until I'm 18. The woman in the store told me that if I was hired the store would get into a buttload of trouble for "contributing to the delinquincy (however the fuck you spell it) of a minor". Okay, I can see that if I was forced to watch all of the porno movies, but handing them out? Please! It's simple: as long as the buyer/renter doesn't look 12, it should be no problem. All you do is scan it, ring it up, put it in a bag, and say bye-bye to the nice people. This whole bullshit with "minors", like the death penalty being cruel and unusual punishment because they didn't know what they were doing when they killed three people and having no say in the governmental process becuase you're not smart enough to understand how it works, is utterly ridiculous! I want to find these people and show them at least four people over the age of 21 who are stupider and more immature than I am. All I want to do is rent out/sell movies and offer my opinions on films to anyone who asks. Is that really so terrible?

P.S. I'm glad theaters hire at 16 'cause I applied at one recently and hope to have a phone call by the middle of next week! Hehehe!

It's not like theyre doing it out of spite. They could get in trouble if a minor got caught re-stocking videos in the back room. I personally don't see a problem with a 17 year old doing it, but it's the law.

Makes no sense to me either.
It reminds me of an odd liquor law here in Texas. You can't legally drink until you're 21, but you can be a bartender once you're 18.

Well, Ki'esha, your argument is kind of silly. No one is saying that everyone older than you is smarter than you. It's just the way it works.

I actually work at a Movie Gallery, and what sucks is that you can't work at ANY Movie Gallery, even if they don't have an adult room, because it is possible you may be called to work at another store that does have one.

"Okay, I can see that if I was forced to watch all of the porno movies, but handing them out?"

It's not just checking out the movies. I'm guessing you've never been in an adult room, but there is a lot of pretty nasty and explicit stuff in there, and I'm not saying that you're not ready to see it or that you haven't but there is no reason you should have to. You seem like a smart person, so don't worry about it and find a job you can get now. I understand the rant, but there's nothing you can do here.

The rule makes perfect sense to me, and I see no problem with it.

When you make it up the ladder that is life, you will look back when a seventeen year old asks you "Why?" and you will say "You'll understand when you're older".

Man, do I miss being 17.

Well here in Australia you don't have to be 18 to work in a video store. How cool is that?
