I think it's time for an Update, Luckily the issue I posted my top 10 in isn't out yet, because I need to update that as well, anyway here's the update:

The Lord Of The Rings moves to #1 on my list, pushing Ocean's Eleven to #2, and so on, anyway Swordfish (even though it was a good movie) falls out of the top 10.

colinM, yes at first Swordfish did get a 10/10 from me, but then I desided i'd better watch again to make sure that's the gade I wanted to give it, and after second viewing i relised that it wasn't worth a 10 because it was just a entertaining and wildy interesting story, that featured some kick ass charecters, I also relised that there were far better films with a far better message and meaning that deserved to be ahead of it. So now in all honesty Swordfish only gets a 7.5/10 from me.... Does that answer your question?

yea, Lord Of The Rings has moved its way up to #3 on my list, just behind Ocean's Eleven #1, The Godfather #2, and although LOTR is the best movie of the year it still falls behind of O's 11 on my all time favorites list, because O's 11 is just plain cool and nothing else, and will always be my favorite movie!!!!

Best/favorite Movies Of All-Time:

1. Ocean's Eleven (10/10)
2. The Godfather (10/10)
3. LOTR (10/10)
4. Legends Of The Fall (10/10)
5. All The Pretty Horses (10/10)

NOTE: Yes, all 5 of them receive a 10 from me, but since some are a little more interesting and a little more entertaining then the others that's why I have numbers by them, based on entertainment value, story, acting, and realism.... Oh and by the way those are the only 5 movies I give a perfect 10 to..

5.) Memento -8/10
6.) Amores Perros -8/10
7.) Panic -8/10
8.) Life As A House -8/10
9.) Lord of The Rings -8/10
10.) A.I.: Artificial Intelligence -8/10

Runners up: Jay & Silent Bob Strike, Blow, Ocean's Eleven, Baby Boy, The Others

Still haven't seen: The Man Who Wasn't There, Waking Life, The Deep End, In The Bedroom, Bully, Lantana, Training Day, Amelie, Sexy Beast, and No Man's Land

Waiting for: Ali, The Majestic, Black Hawk Down, Monster's Ball, Gosford Park, and The Royal Tenenbaums

**Note: I consider Apocalypse Now Redux (while inferior to the original version) the best movie I've seen this year, however, I consider it a 1979 film considering the original version was released then and all the additional footage was shot then or before. Otherwise, it would easily be my top spot in a pretty poor year.

If I must pick only one each, it would be:

Best: Hedwig and the Angry Inch. A kickass blast of visual splendor, heartfelt emotion, and a universal mindset filtered through a very specific character.

Worst. Freddy Got Fingered. Hollywood backs a lame, "comedian" who basks in his repugnant ineptitude. I wept when I watched this vile fiasco - I shed tears for the audience unfortunate enough to witness this garbage, and for a business willing to finance this sludge.

Any newspaper whose critic cites Behind Enemy Lines, Pearl Harbor and Swordfish in its "ten best," while condemning The Pledge to its shit list is a newspaper severely lacking in quality journalism. But what would one expect from someone who misspells "honorable"?

Alas, any year-end list that fails to cite Hedwig and the Angry Inch or Mulholland Drive isn't a list worth any attention. Did either of these films play in your podunk town? Why does Shrek (an overrated but by no means terrible movie) warrant inclusion on your shit list when Tomb Raider, Double Team, Rush Hour 2 or Tomcats are more "worthy"? Who on earth would consider Rock Star worse than, say, Sweet November or Town & Country? Anyone who believes that A Knight's Tale is worthy of an "honerable" mention, apparently.

Best Movie of 2001
ALI (10/10)- A visual and emotional masterpiece, the most unwittingly educational movie of the year. Not one performance was bad, the script and direction hit all the right notes. The period was fully captured, as was Ali's fiery personality. Destined to be Michael Mann's most misunderstood film.

Worst Movie of 2001
VALENTINE (1/10)- A vile of unfunny camp, terrible all around and lacking a brain or any wit at all. I can't believe Warner Bros. would make this trash! Wait, yes I can...

Best Movie of 2001:
Memento (9/10)
A great movie that absorbs you in for every minute. You might not always understand what's going on in the film, but it's fun as hell to figure it out. An instant classic that should be in everyone's movie collection.

Worst Movie of 2001:
Bubble Boy (0/10)
There's absolutely nothing noteworthy about this trash. It's offensive, it's unfunny, and it's very painful to watch. Avoid this one at all costs. I'd rather watch endless reruns of Power Rangers than see this again.

I'll compile a top ten and a bottom ten when I get the time.

Lets see here, I think you need to pay a little more attention, first of all Swordfish is no longer in my top 10 and BEL has fallin to #6, second of all did ever stop to think that maybe I haven't seen Town & Country or Sweet November therefore Rock Star is on the list? And yes Mulholland Drive did play in my town, I saw it, I liked it but it's not one of the 10 best. Then we have Hedwig & The Angry Inch, HAHA, that movie is GARBAGE, go read Joblo's reveiw and you'll find out what I mean. And then you have to comment on me as a person, saying my list isn't worth paying attention to but your's is, that's very rude. And if you actually read what I wrote then you would have noticed that I didn't say Shrek was terrible, I said it was good but not as good as people say.

P.S. You Are A Very Rude Person.... I have an opinion and yes I am going to state it. Whether you like it or not, it's not my problem. You get mad because someone didn't put HATAI on their 10 best of year list, WHY???? People didn't put The Last Castle on their list do you see me getting mad at them???? NO, because people have DIFFERENT tastes in movies and that is something everyone here understands and I think you should as well. Yes, I liked A Knight's Tale! Who Cares? How does me liking A Knight's Tale have anything to do with you? How is it affecting you????? IT'S NOT. so if you would kindly get off my back about my list I will go on and leave you alone, thank you.

How does me liking A Knight's Tale have anything to do with you? How is it affecting you????? IT'S NOT. so if you would kindly get off my back about my list I will go on and leave you alone, thank you.</font>

Of course everyone's entitled to their opinion. My problem with your post was that by adding that you write for a local paper you imply that a) you've seen a great deal of films this year, and b) your opinions are more valid by your paid profession in film journalism. It's not that you liked those films; my grievance is, as a professional journalist, you have the responsibility of separating the good from the bad for your uninformed readers. And anyone paid for their opinion who hasn't seen Town & Country (the most notorious bomb of 2001) needs to rent the damn thing before presenting any year-end evaluation.

And questioning your credentials was not a personal attack. Do you call everyone rude who disagrees with you?

No, i'm ussally a pretty nice guy, but your post hit me hard because I felt that you were attacking my right to like any film I want, but you weren't and I apologize to you for thinking that. I just thought that the movies I listed were good I really liked Ocean's Eleven, and seriously disliked Rock Star, I mean my list is not that bad, I have seen far worst Top 10 list's this year from different critic's (***cough cough*** Roger Ebert ***cough cough***) and if you think that Town & Country should be the worst I will see rent it and find out for myself but until then I still take Rock Star as the worst. I'm going to explain something to you, I am not the only critic at my paper therefore I do not see every movie, I am assigned to different movies I have no choice in what I see, until I go to a movie for myself and not for the paper.

P.S. TheRealJhong, I don't live in Sioux Falls anymore, I moved to go to college. I'm from Sioux Falls thats why I put it down as the state I'm from.

DiCapriotravoltaman- I could go on and on about how you lie all the time, but I'll be nice and I won't. Anyway here is my updated top 10 list!

10. Heist
9. A Beautiful Mind
8. Monster's Inc.
7. Ocean's 11
6. Zoolander
5. The Others
4. Shrek
3. The Royal Tenenbaums
2. Fellowship of the Ring
1. Memento

Still want to see: Ali, Black Hawk Down, I am Sam, The Man Who Wasn't There, Vanilla Sky and Moulin Rouge. And of course there are more movies like Gosford Park, In the Bedroom, Monster's Ball, Sexy Beast, Waking Life, and The Shipping News which all have been getting good reviews and could be Oscar contenders but they don't look very interesting to me.

Hey man, you can think what you wanna think, I'm not stopping you, I mean you really have no idea of Who I am or What I do, so why would you saying I lie offend me? It won't because you don't know me as a person, you know me as a movie buff, but that's it. You can say that I lie, that's fine but how do you know this if you don't know me personally?? But I'm done talking about it because it really dosen't matter to me what you guys think of me as a person.

First off, I just want to say that this week it was my mom rented Town & Country from the video store. It's very rare that she rents a movie. Actually she rented 2, America's Sweethearts was the other. Anyways, I watched Town & Country and it wasn't that bad, I kinda liked it. Someone wanna chew me out and call me names because I liked it? No? Didn't think so. Anyways, here is my Top 5 list, because there weren't 10 films that were good enough to compile a 10 list this year.
5. Shrek
4. Swordfish
3. Snatch
2. Vanilla Sky
1. Ocean's Eleven

Worst:
Pearl Harbor
Harry Potter
Bubble Boy
Tomcats
Say it isn't so
Valentine
Pootie Tang...I could continue but I won't.

6.Hannibal

5.Scary Movie 2

That's actually all the movies I disliked this year. Yep, that's right, I'm one of the few, the proud, the people who didn't hate "Freddy Got Fingered" or "Saving Silverman."

The only film that I have yet to see which might alter my list is "Black Hawk Down." That being said, my final top and bottom ten, after much thought and reflection--and gratitude that I live in a large city where I can see limited release films. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

Top ten (1 is best)
1.)In the Bedroom
2.)A Beautiful Mind
3.)No Man's Land
4.)The Royal Tenenbaums
5.)Moulin Rouge
6.)Ghost World
7.)Gosford Park
8.)The Man Who Wasn't There
9.)Memento
10.)The Others
Honorable mention: Amelie, Lantana, Amores Perros, The Dish, Bridget Jones' Diary, Monster's Ball, Life As a House

Bottom ten (1 is worst)--assuming I avoided all films with Adam Sandler and assorted Saturday Night Live rejects. I believe that we can all safely assume that Freddy Got Fingered and The Animal were hideous

1.)A.I. --sorry, I thought it fell tragically short of its potential.
2.)Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
3.)Tomb Raider--yes, my husband dragged me to it.
4.)Evolution
5.)Planet of the Apes
6.)The Wedding Planner
7.)Ocean's 11--a huge disappointment
8.)Vanilla Sky
9.)Rock Star
10.)K-Pax

Each film truly hideous or disappointing in their own wonderful ways.

Best - Mulholland Drive tops the list, because it is the most important, most artistically cohesive, and most brilliant film in five years (if not more). in no order, here are this unprecedented year's best, in my opinion:

Ghost World
The Royal Tenenbaums
The Man Who Wasn't There
Memento
Gosford Park
In The Bedroom

The worst: all summer movies. Amelie. all action movies. all comedies (except Made) and pretty much anything that came out of a major hollywood studio.

A corollary: To anyone who gets upset when "they aren't allowed to have their own taste" I say that taste is one thing. Some people do not have a wide range of films to base their opinions on. Many people do not read scholarly books on film history and theory. Few are able to take classes at colleges or universities. If someone only knows of 2 kinds of gruel to eat all their days, one kind of gruel will of course be favored. Chefs have specialized knowledge and can probably name a dozen arcane and exotic dishes that they call "the best" and no two lists would be alike. The distinction between taste and quality is important. Someone may claim that their taste is equivalent to quality. In fact, most people might claim this, it's only human nature. There IS, however, a difference between gruel and gourmet. Just like there is a difference between either version of Oceans Eleven and Mulholland Drive. One is a money-making remake of an already schlocky movie, the other is brilliance (in my opinion). There is an undisputable difference between Dude Where's my Car? and Citizen Kane.

3) Memento- Choosing to play this film in reverse may have made on of the best movies in history

2) A Beautiful Mind- Russel Crowe is on his way to pulling a "Tom Hanks" and going 2-in-a-row

1) The Fellowship of the Ring- The LOTR trilogy is already shaping up to be the next STAR WARS franchise

Now For The Worst

10) The Wedding Planner- what the hell?
9) America's Sweethearts- Good Actors, bed movie

5) Original Sin- This movie is a sin
4) What's The Worst That Could Happen- this movie
3) American Pie 2- the teen gross out is moving towards less TnA, God help us all

I just saw the incredible Mulholland Drive. I am having a really hard time giving it a grade, but it will have a spot in my top ten, and maybe even top 5.

Here are my Top Ten Movies of 2001. I'm not a full time movie critic like Joblo, so I haven't seen nearly as many films as he has and by no means have I seen all the 2001 releases(I've seen about 37), but I see all the movies that look good to me, with a few exceptions(I still need to see Vanilla Sky, A.I., and Joy Ride). So here goes...

1. "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" (10/10)
2. "Pearl Harbor" (10/10)
3. "Moulin Rouge" (9/10)
4. "O" (9/10)
5. "Get Over It" (9/10)
6. "Black Hawk Down" (8/10)
7. "The Others" (8/10)
8. "Heartbreakers" (8/10)
9. "Ocean's Eleven" (7/10)
10. "Memento" (7/10)

ALI (10/10)- A visual and emotional masterpiece, the most unwittingly educational movie of the year. Not one performance was bad, the script and direction hit all the right notes. The period was fully captured, as was Ali's fiery personality. Destined to be Michael Mann's most misunderstood film.

Well, I no longer think it's 2001's best (that honor would now go to Monster's Ball), but it's still an underrated movie...
