Eh...King Kong was ok...but not hardly as good as the hype made it out to be. I'm not trying to be a hater...it was good, but...
1.) it dragged on a little at the beginning
2.) the natives were ridiculous {some were actually black, the old woman looked mexican, and a few of the extras like the little girl were white people painted black
3.)O... and for some reason the natives had gingivitis, and had yet to develop pupils.
4.) Most of the time the CGI was great, but when Naomi Watts started to "juggle" I actually laughed out loud in the theater.

Ok...sorry for the rant... i know it was uncalled for, but I'm just to lazy to reach for the backspace key. Now back to the subject at hand...

1.) Oldboy<--movie knocked me off my couch.
2.) Serenity<--I know I know...I'm such a nerd
3.)Sin City<--Great translation of Frank Miller's masterpiece
4.)Batman Begins<--The first batman movie in the past 16 years worth watching.
5.)The 40 Year Old Virgin<--Probably the funniest movie of the decade
6.) A History of Violence<--Aside from its completely useless first 5 minutes, this movie was great.

*I still need to see Broken Flowers, Munich, Syriana, and Junebug, and The New World. I'm sure that seeing these movies would help to complete my list. I doubt that I'll ever see Brokeback Moutain or Mysterious Skin though. I'm sure they are both great movies but man on man loving is a little to much for me. I'm a pretty tolerant person, however, that doesn't mean I want to spend $9 on seeing a movie that will ultimately just give me the heebeejeebies (is that a word?).

10: Sophie Scholl: The Final Days (4/5)
(Marc Rothemund Germany)
This would have been quite an average film (albeit one about a riveting set of events) but for an outstanding central performance from Julia Jentsch as Scholl. Jentsch lifts the whole movie, with the single best performance by an actress this year.

9: Kinsey (4/5)
(Bill Condon USA)
Ambitious biopic of the still controversial Alfred Kinsey. It could have been preachy but is saved from that by a surprising and welcome sense of humour in the script and excellent performances from Liam Neeson, an Oscar nominated Laura Linney and Peter Sarsgaard.

8: A History of Violence (4/5)
(David Cronenberg USA)
Cronenberg's adaptation of the cult graphic novel doesn't seem, at first glance, like his typical type of movie. It ends up being his most Cronenbergian work since eXistenZ and his best since The Fly. Cronenberg's direction is strong but it's the performances of Viggo Mortenson and Maria Bello (an underrated actress who, surely, must get an Oscar nod here) that power the film and make it as memorable an experience as it is.

7: A Very Long Engagement (4/5)
(Jean Pierre Jeunet France)
Reuniting Jeunet and his Amelie star Audrey Tautou this world war one romantic comedy drama drops much of the sentimentality of that film to far more engaging effect.
Tautou is charm itself as Mathilde and there's able support, particularly from a near mute Marion Cotillard and Jodie Foster, proving that even in her second language she's one of the best actors in the world.

6: In Your Hands (5/5)
(Anette K Oleson Denmark)
Okay so it's very remeniscent of The Green Mile but this is actually a better film that that rather overrated one. Set in a Danish women's prison this last official Dogme film is a moving story about some very different people brought together by a miracle. Anette Oleson draws great performances from her whole cast, particularly the subtle and moving turn of Trine Dyrholm, as well as using the Dogme rules to create a sense of reality.

5: A Cock and Bull Story (5/5)
(Michael Winterbottom UK)
In his best film for many years Britain's most versatile and consistent director adapts the 'unfilmable' novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy not by adapting it but by making a film about the impossibility of doing so. Uproariously funny from end to end A Cock and Bull Story is a joy. Winterbottom blurs fact and fantasy expertly and the cast (including many of the director's stock players) are all on wonderful form with standouts including Rob Brydon and a wonderful cameo from Gillian Anderson.

4: Le Temps Qui Reste (5/5)
(Francois Ozon France)
The question of who the best working director in the world is isn't even up for debate. It's Francois Ozon. This isn't his best film (that's further up this list) but this second part of the trilogy on mourning he began with Under the Sand is as affecting a film as you're likely to see. Lead Melvil Poupard takes centre stage with a brilliantly underplayed performance. Support drifts in and out around him with Jeanne Moreau wonderful as Poupard's grandmother and Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi very funny as a waitress. Ozon seems to grow visually from film to film and this sumptuous piece is no exception.

3: 3-Iron (5/5)
(Kim Ki Duk South Korea)
Korean auteur Kim is at perhaps his most accessible with this largely silent meditation on love and... well that'd be telling. Always visually impeccable Kim has outdone himself with the cinematography here, there's nothing on a grand scale, just suburban neighbourhoods and houses but it's crisply and beautifully captured. The silent leading performances are subtle yet never struggle to communicate the characters emotions nor does the lack of dialogue feel unnatural, it's just that they'll speak if they need to.

2: 5 X 2 (5/5)
(Francois Ozon France)
A couple's entire relationship is traced backwards in five segments from some disturbing sex right after the divorce papers are signed to a near idyllic first meeting. The structure serves a purpose... it lets us get caught up in the romance, even though we know it ends horribly.
Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi and Stephane Freiss are stunning. They share the chemistry to convince as husband and wife and neither hits a false emotional beat the whole way.
Ozon wisely throws the focus entirely on his actors, letting them do the work and keeping his camera unobtrusive.

1: Downfall (5/5)
(Oliver Hirschbiegel Germany)
In a great year for German cinema this was the stand out. At the centre is Bruno Ganz simply outstanding performance as Hitler. Ganz looks so like Hitler you double take on first seeing him and his performance seems less like acting and more like posession. It's no one man show though. Every performance is brilliant from Alexandra Maria Lara's naïve Traudl Junge, to Ulrich Matthes eerie Goebbels but it's from Corinna Harfouch that the best performance comes. Harfouch is, as Magda Goebbels, utterly terrifying and completely convincingly unhinged in a disqueting way. Add to these stellar performances Hirschbiegel's almost documentary direction and you've the best film of 2005.

The only movie I definitely plan on seeing that I haven't seen is The Squid and the Whale, which most likely won't open near me in theaters, so I'll have to wait until it comes out on DVD in March. Other than that, some notable movies I haven't seen: Syriana; March of the Penguins; Transamerica; The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada; Howl's Moving Castle...that's about it.

1- King Kong
-A combination of great action, a heartwarming love story, and great special effects makes for a fantastic remake.

2 - Sin City
-What makes this movie so freakin' awesome is its originality. Its style, look, characters, and true adaptation from the comic book all makes for a kickass time at the movies.

3 - Batman Begins
-This Batman movie is dark, gritty, action packed, and has a great story that keeps kicking and brillantly restartsthe dark knight tale.

4 - Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
-A Star Wars movie that Star Wars fans can be proud of. It brings great light sabre fights, an excellent ending to the Star Wars saga.

5 - Munich
-Spielberg knows how to make every kind of movie imaginable. In this one he brings a modern perspective into a historical tragedy. There's very, very little wrong with this movie from its acting, story, direction, and moral values.

6 - Mr. & Mrs. Smith
-This movie screams popcorn movie baby. From its two gorgeous leads to its fun storyline, this movie is a blast to sit through.

7 - Layer Cake
-I liked this movie just because I liked the British style of filmmaking that's all over the flick. You also see the future James Bond in action as well.

8 - A History of Violence
-What can you expect from a movie with that title? I tell you what: great acting, great story, gritty violence, and a lot of character development.

9 - Walk the Line
-If you like Johnny Cash, you will like this movie. Even if you don't, you'll probably like this movie that isn't so much a biopic, but a love story that resonates through its two lead actors.

10 - Charlie & the Chocolate Factory
-Johnny Depp can do no wrong, especially when he's around Tim Burton. The flick offers family fun, a cooky Willy Wonka, and - from what I understand - a truer adaptation to the original material.

Kindred spirits: Crash, Serenity, War of the Worlds, Unleashed, Kung Fu Hustle

Foxx seems to have become an arrogant asshole since his Oscar, however, it doesn't change the fact that he was born to play that role. I doubt he will ever do anything that significant or watchable again. I must say that Peter Sarsgaard never disapoints though.

he did with Collateral that same year. Not to mention I thought he was great in Jarhead. Its just a shame I couldnt say the same for Stealth.

1. Crash - easily the year’s best film; thought-provoking, intelligent, and unforgettable. Paul Haggis (who got an Oscar nom writing last year’s best film “Million Dollar Baby”) does the best job of interweaving characters since 1999’s “Magnolia”. Dillon, Howard, Bullock, Cheadle head the brilliant cast.
2. The Squid and the Whale - it seemed overlooked there for a while, until the Golden Globe noms came out. It’s got a chance at some Oscars now, luckily. Laura Linney is my Best Actress, and Jeff Daniels is one of the tops.
3. Brokeback Mountain - the most emotionally involving film since “Mystic River”. Ledger, Gyllenhaal, Williams, and Hathaway go beyond what they have shown before. Ang Lee has Best Director written all over him.
4. Capote - a wonderful film about Truman Capote boasts the best male performance of the year and one of the best supporting males as well. Great chemistry throughout.
5. Broken Flowers - Jim Jarmusch’s offbeat love story with Bill Murray in a subtle, yet playful performance. Rush and Stone give great supporting turns.
6. Jarhead - not sure if I can gloat enough about Gyllenhaal, but he hit’s the nail on the head as an experienced/bored sniped in the Middle East in Sam Mende’s pre-Desert War film. note: Peter Sarsgaard gives a great supporting turn, as well.
7. Match Point - Woody Allen’s return to greatness features enough clever [key word] turns in the last 20 minutes to keep an audience on their toes. His best directorial effort since ‘89’s “Crimes and Misdemeanors”. Jonathan Rhys-Meyers stars as a former tennis pro who falls for a forbidden Scarlett Johansson. I say, give them at least noms, and Allen’s screenplay as well.
8. Grizzly Man - the best documentary in years. Herzog’s chilling film tells the story of a man who cared for and lived with bears…then, along with his girlfriend, was killed by them. Funny and heartbreaking at the same time. It has the honor of having the most disturbing moment in any film of the year.
9. Sin City - visually arresting, this kind of film doesn’t rely on amazing performances, yet still delivers: Bruce Willis, especially (his best since 1994’s “Pulp Fiction”). Best cast of the year.
10. Good Night, and Good Luck - one of the more surprising films of the year, with another great lineup (2005 = best year for great casts in years), with David Strathairn, Downey Jr. and director Clooney shining. This television news drama has the best cinematography of the year.

Short Version:

1. "Mysterious Skin"
2. "Millions"
3. "Crash"
4. "Munich"
5. "Sin City"
6. "Batman Begins"
7. "Howl's Moving Castle"
8. "Grizzly Man"
9. "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada"
10. "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" & "The 40 Year-Old Virgin" (tie)

Runners up: Thumbsucker, Wallace & Gromit, Lord of War, The Constant Gardener, Downfall, Tarnation, Kung-Fu Hustle, A History of Violence, Star Wars III, War of the Worlds, Duma, Brokeback Mountain, Match Point, Me You and Everyone We Know, In Her Shoes, Good Night and Good Luck, The Family Stone, High Tension, The Producers, The Weather Man.

Extended Version:

"Mysterious Skin" - Araki, not an amazing director, manages to create one of the most raw and haunting films I've ever seen. Levitt's performance is shockingly good.

"Millions" - Danny Boyle always has something good to offer. A fantasy drama that is endlessly imaginative, good-natured and kept me smiling.

"Crash" - Most surprising film of the year came like a punch in the gut. A few very memorable scenes highlight this unforgettable movie. Favorite: the major car wreck---ooh, chilling.

"Munich" - A powerful political statement is suspenseful, thought-provoking and will incite much conversation.

"Sin City" - It may be largely digital, but this action-packed and beautifully rendered adaptation of graphic novels comes to life in a way that will spawn imitators, as it has set quite a standard.

"Batman Begins" - The single best Batman movie I've sat through, BUT there are so many things I like about Burton's two films that Begins could never rival. This has its many positive sides that Burton missed about Batman, and I like that.

"Howl's Moving Castle" - Miyazaki, the great master of animation shows once again how to make an endearing and beautiful animated film, amongst the sea of digital crap (except Pixar) we've been getting every year. John Lasseter took a lesson from Miyazaki, maybe Disney should try to do the same, because at this rate, they aren't getting out of the hole they've dug for themselves.

"Grizzly Man" - This is one remarkable experience about a man killed by his passion, the thing that packs a whallop is that he didn't mind a bit. Fascinating experience that could've been frightening had Herzog left in the actual audio from the attack, but I respect his direction plus he end the ordeal beautifully.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" - Hated by many a moviegoer, but its no fluke, I've watched this a few times and I'm put in an uncontrollable fit of laughter.

"The 40 Year-Old Virgin" - The second and last great comedy of the year. Carell's performance takes this film up a notch. Its rare that I actually care about a character in a comedy and still laugh really hard.

"Thumbsucker" - Not well loved, but I found it quite moving. I can let go the fact it borrows some style from earlier indie's. It's really the story and performances that I care about. And whoa, I thought I'd never witness Keanu Reeves deliver a good performance.

Strangely, the first down year in box office in 20 years was a fantastic year in film. There's a crapload of memorable runners up. I'm in shock.

NOTE: OldBoy would be my top film since they released it in the states in 2005 but its on my 2004 list since I saw it that year.

I've only broken my rule once, for the 2000 film season, but I've promised myself that I will never do it again.

Jarhead
Wedding Crashers
Crash
Sin City
Batman Begins
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Saw II
Coach Carter
Star Wars: Episode 3- Revenge of the Sith
Munich
A History of Violence
King Kong

In no particular order. These were the best that I've seen of 2005, if I missed a movie that was amazing in your opinion, it probably means I didn't see it, like Capote. I would say Brokeback Mountain but it did make me feel a little uneasy and uncomportable when I saw it considering I was probably the only person under 18 in the theatre. I had to put 12 because I couldn't decide on 9 and 10.

1. Jarhead 10/10
2. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith 10/10
3. Batman Begins 9/10
4. Coach Carter 9/10
5. Walk the Line 8/10
6. King Kong 8/10
7. War of the Worlds 8/10
8. Cinderella Man 8/10

Those are the only three I really liked. I think 40 Year Old Virgin is really overrated, Harry Potter 4 was too short, Chronicles of Narnia Suckedand I still need to see Munich, Syriana, Capote, Crash, Brokeback Mountain, The Squid & the Whale, A History of Violence, Sin City, Wedding Crashers, The New World, Match Point, Saw II (along with Saw), Broken Flowers, and more.
