I'm writing and directing a tribute of sorts to both my hero George Romero and the zombie genre that I love.

No big story. Zombies rise for no apparent reason and a group of teenagers on a camping trip decide to become vigilantes.

The purpose of the movie is really for me to gain a little experience in writing, directing, and to learn about special effects.

I need som eadvice from you all. I need suggestions for severed limbs. I learned a bit about making plaster casts, but I don't see this looking as realistic as I might want. I'm not expecting to turn out hollywood quality props, but I'd like some realism with the severed limbs.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can create some limbs? Materials?? Latex perhaps??

I'm not sure on how you want to make severed limbs without plaster casts..thats the best way..you could always buy props from costume & make up shops & tweak them up. As far as wounds & chunks of meat (ie. bite wounds/ripping of skin). I would recommend getting a decent amount of latex spreading it thick over a flat surface. Allowing it to dry & gently taking a toothpick & tearing holes into the wounds very small & minute, this way when you apply it on ur actor during the attack your zombie can bite & tear away the appliance & it appears as if segments of flesh are being eaten and ripped away from the body - which is a very cool effect it inself. The good thing about using this tip is you can use the same pieces over again on various scenes & it saves money.

I hope that helped you some & good luck on your venture.

ONe thing I have done in the past for a feature I was working on that was a slasher flick was rent a manquin that disassembles and then work around that. You could also dress up a dummy for a scene with the intestines, just show the chest which could be used with paper mache, blood, guts, etc and then pull it out like that. I havent done a zombie film yet but these are examples I would try.

These are low end ways but if the DP knows what hes doing, you could pull it off.
