Am I the only one looking forward to Tristan & Isolde in January?:(

Actually, I forgot about that one. I think it looks ok. But most of what comes out in January looks like crap. Bloodrayne anyone? Grandma's Boy anyone? Big Momma's House 2 anyone? Hostel doesn't look that good to me either. Nanny McPhea doesn't look too bad, but it doesn't look good either. That despite the presence of Colin Firth and Emma Thompson.

I saw this film at a Film Festival in Vancouver. It was quite good. Shot on a very visable stage, but I liked it. Although it's not a suggestion to watch it in theatres. It's way too long, and complicated. A way better picture to see at home. But suit yourself. I will say this, you'll like it, if you like Dogville.

(1/10) = I got up out of the theatre and demanded a refund.

(2/10) = Terrible movie, yet piqued my curiosity enough sit through to the end.

(3/10) = Very bad movie.

(4/10) = A bad movie. Yet still watchable, and still somewhat enjoyable.

(5/10) = A decent movie. Nothing too great, but nothing too terrible.

(6/10) = More good than bad, yet still lacking in key points. An entertaining movie.

(7/10) = A good movie. Solid well made film with little or no plot holes. Very entertaining.

(8/10) = A fantastic movie. Most likely I went and saw this movie more than once at the theatre. Every shot was thought out carefully, no plot holes, perfect acting.

(9/10) = A classic. This movie rating is essentially as well made as an 8/10 yet there is something about it that makes it a classic.

(10/10) = A masterpiece. Movie perfection.

Here's the way I see 2006:

10/10:
X-Men The Last Stand- This movie had grit, heart, and pivotal action. It is a work of art/comic book pulp fiction rarely seen on the silver screen. The characters, effects, and story were all spectacular.

9/10:
Find Me Guilty- Maybe the character of a gangster/gagster that never made it past the sixth grade was the perfect role for Vin Diesel but, regardless, he nailed the part. He shows a remarkable level and range of emotions. The story itself was riveting.
Inside Man- An extremely intelligent thriller that keeps you guessing the entire time. This cast just knocks it out of the park. The excessive shaky cam bits hurt this movie at times but not enough to knock it.

8/10:
16 Blocks- It's not the cookie cutter action film that I was expecting when I first heard about the plot. Willis does a wonderful job as usual. Mos Def's mumbling character does annoy you at first but he grows on you as the film progresses. Also, I think it adds to the complexity of the film because of what Willis' character ends up doing.
Clerks 2- I know it’s expected in a Kevin Smith movie but, even so, the excessive vulgarity detracted from what was a tremendous follow up to the first film. I liked these characters more this time around and I even found myself laughing out loud on more then one occasion.

7/10:
Firewall- A solid, typical Harrison Ford thriller. Heady at times but it also asks for quite a few leaps of faith.
Annapolis- Another solid yet unspectacular film. Critics tried to bash it by calling it a cross between Rocky and An Officer and a Gentleman, which is a pretty accurate description. I don’t see what’s wrong with that. Predictable? Yes, but who cares?
Mission Impossible 3- A common yet entertaining movie that plays out like an extended version of the TV show Alias.
The Lake House- The time travel aspect and resolution makes no sense whatsoever but that’s not really the point. It’s best to just sit back and turn your brain off and enjoy the performances. A mindless popcorn romantic flick believe it or not.
Superman Returns- This movie isn't the top of list quality but it's a worthy effort. Routh was better then I thought he'd be. Even though the movie is very action light (and that action being solely scenes of Superman flying around catching and lifting stuff), I was only bored at certain times.
The Devil Wears Prada- Yet another chick flick that I found to be well done. The cast couldn’t be any more perfect and the story imparts a nice message.

6/10:
Underworld Evolution- Got exactly what I was expecting. HOT heroine battles CGI vampires and werewolves, the end. Silly action but fun none-the-less.
Click- Your typical Adam Sandler comedy turns in to something more by the end of the movie. I liked it more when it went from Billy Madison becomes a dad to a type of It’s A Wonderful Life.

5/10:
The Matador- It was certainly interesting but somewhat pedestrian. Likeable characters even though one of them is a pig hitman. Nothing special, however.
Ask the Dust- An absolute scrambled eggs plot that finds wierdos and strange relationships everywhere in 1930s LA. Two wonderful performances by Farrell and Hayek aren’t near enough. Even though Salma’s nude scenes were brief and filmed through fog and darkness, they were still much appreciated.
Poseidon- Exactly what I thought it would be. The pacing keeps you interested but nothing new here at all.
A Scanner Darkly- Nothing but a gimmick movie featuring stoner conversations that aren’t very interesting where the actors are drawn over in a form of cartoon. Somewhat cool for a few minutes but it wears thin and then all you’re left with is one dumb plot.

4/10:
Lucky Number Slevin- A great cast wasted on what amounts to slick nothing. The plot/story makes no sense given little thought.
V for Vendetta- A rambling and genuinely uninteresting movie that tries to make a point but fails miserably.
My Super Ex-Girlfriend- Just an awful slapstick farce that should’ve never been made. I think I chuckled twice during my entire time at the theatre. If you’ve seen the trailer then you’ve seen the best parts of this movie.
Scoop- I needed this reminder of why I agree with the Simpson’s Ned Flanders when he says, “I like Woody Allen films except for that nervous fellow that’s always in them.” Allen’s annoying character kills this movie. The fact that great talent like Scarlett and Hugh are wasted doesn’t help either.

3/10:
Freedomland- Sam Jackson sure can act but he sure can’t pick ‘um. This thing was pointless unless the point was don’t let drug addled fools reproduce or whitey is the problem.

2/10:
Nacho Libre- This one note movie starts to annoy from the 15 minute mark and never lets up. I usually like Jack Black but I hated this movie.

1/10 :
The Da Vinci Code- It wants to be taken seriously but it’s nothing but utter nonsense. .It has aspirations of being an intense drama. There's no heart and the story is so absurd that you’re never drawn in to the film. Not intense enough and not smart enough, it’s caught in no man’s land.

Wow, I've just surpassed 30 2006 movies and still nothing above a 8/10. I don't think I watched this many movies last year and I think I had two 9/10s and one 10/10, though the latter didn't come until December. There are still a lot of movies I'm looking forward to, but so far - this has been a lackluster year.

Maybe my standards are too high.

How do you figure that? Basically half of the movies I watch I don't like anything 6/10 or below I consider thumbs down...

I'll admit in truth I am pretty easy to please...because I can find things I like in the smallest details about things not just movies...but also remember I am a movie fan first and foremost so I do find I like a lot of movies...but I always like the same kind of movies and if they please me in some way or I like the way they are done thats what matters to me...

I'm not one of the guys who hates everything and rags on everything...I'm just not going to do that...I think if you are one of those people then you're in the wrong business...
