View Full Version : Hello, my name is Steve Martin. I used to be funny...now I'm just a sell-out!

One question to put towards all of you guys...Steve Martin: sell-out or does he still have it?
Personally, I think he is washed up and hasn't made a good movie in years. Sometimes, it's hard for me to believe that the same Steve Martin who was in The Jerk and [/i]Roxanne[/i] is in shitty films such as Cheaper by the Dozen. God, he's lost it.
What do you guys think?

Cheaper by the Dozen brings in the money, he gets paid. That's probably his reasoning -- plus, he can make artistic endeavors on the side (Shopgirl, The Spanish Prisoner).
I think he's mellowed out in his recent years.

Exactly, he isn't young enough to make the extremely stupid and sometimes profane comedies.
And he does it for money. That doesn't make him a sell out, or greedy, money is money. Hell, I'd star in a shitty movie for $5 million!

How Could You Not Find Steve Martin Funny?

I never found him funny either. It's a pain to listen or watch his old stand-up.
I think that he is just taking roles that can get him some nice money now, along with a few independent/artistic type films on the side. As Lazy Boy said, he's just mellowed out.

To be completely honest, I was very surprised to hear some of your responses. I thought Steve Martin was a comedian/actor loved by all. Woops. I was wrong ;). Let me pose this question to you guys then. Even if you don't like Steve Martin...is there a certain movie he has starred in, either a major roll or not, that you hold in a special place in your heart? Just curios.

Yup! LA Story. That's the only memorable funny thing he's ever done as far as I'm concerned. I'm not too familiar with his other stuff.

His best film in my opinion was Father of the Bride. That movie was effective.
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is also classic.
Sure...he is probably making a lot of money with these childrens films. But they are doing relatively well in their target demographics. To put it simpler, he isn't making Cheaper By the Dozen for you...its for the kiddies.
He has done the indie film thing -- in 2001 with novacaine and in his next project. He also published the short story for Shopgirl which eventually became a film in which he penned, produced, and starred in.

I thought he's been excellent in several movies where he's less comedic and more emphtatic. Pennies From Heaven and Grand Canyon are two, even though the latter serves him up as a proverbial sermonizer for the movie's theme.

I think he's a good actor, but like Billy Crystal, my favorite performance of his is actually when he hosts the oscars. Next to Billy Crystal, he's my favorite oscar host.

It's not selling to do Cheaper by the Dozen.
Thinking of the other, less established actors that really need the work and the money (Hilary "Boo, I'm A Skeleton" Duff aside) gets them another role, despite the suckiness of the movie.
And OOH, the original sucked Q-Bert balls so the sequel follows suit.
The Jerk
The Lonely Guy
The Man with Two Brains
All of Me
My Blue Heaven
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Roxanne
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid
For this roster of funny ass films, I'll give this man a pass on selling out.
Funny? Reference any of the above films and tell me you didn't find at least one of them funny.
Comedy is subjective.
Everyone has their own opinion.
Mine is if you want to work in Hollywood, sometimes Jeepers Creepers III: A WIld and Crazy Demon starring Steve Martin happens.
But he made me laugh back then, despite what he does now, I don't forget.
